Iran Urges IAEA To Act Against Israel

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Iran has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take strong actions against Israel's blatant aggression on its territory.
Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi said the IAEA should condemn Israel's actions and prevent further violations of international laws. bootstrap slideshow
"Israel, as a non-member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), attacks the country which is a member of the NPT, so the IAEA must have a very strong position against Israel and stop them from this aggression,' he told reporters after meeting some 50 representatives from Malaysian non-governmental organisation during a solidarity visit at the Embassy here, Tuesday.
The visit was led by the president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM), Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid.
To a question whether Iran will leave the NPT, Valiollah said Iran remains committed to the treaty.
Iran has been a signatory to NPT since 1970.
Iran on Monday said that the authorities will decide whether to withdraw from the NPT, following IAEA's report that found Iran is in breach of its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years.
Meanwhile, Azmi said MAPIM will hold a peaceful rally in solidarity with the Iranian people on June 20.
The group is expected to march from Masjid Tabung Haji after Friday prayers to the Embassy of the United States where it will submit a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining its stance and demands in regards to the escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran.
Regional tension has escalated since Friday after Israel launched coordinated air strikes on multiple sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes.

Qatar monitoring Gulf radiation after Israeli strikes on Iran nuclear sites
DOHA: Qatar has been monitoring radiation levels in the Gulf as Israeli air strikes pound Iranian nuclear facilities, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday. "We are monitoring this on a daily basis," foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari told a news conference. "We have nothing to be concerned about right now, but obviously prolonged escalation will have unpredictable consequences." Israel launched an unprecedented air campaign against Iran's nuclear infrastructure on Friday, triggering deadly missile exchanges between the arch foes, which are now in their fifth day. "We have to emphasise, when we are talking about the waters of the Gulf, it's the main source of water for all of us here in the region," Ansari said. "The international community has to make it very clear that any targeting of nuclear facilities, any targeting of fuel or energy facilities in this region, would have ramifications that are unknown to us in the Gulf." Iran has a nuclear power plant at Bushehr on the Gulf coast, though its uranium enrichment facilities, which have been targeted by Israel, lie hundreds of kilometres (miles) inland. The UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Friday it had been informed by Iran that the Bushehr plant had not been targeted. On Saturday, Israel struck a major Iranian gas facility on the Gulf coast serving the South Pars gas field, which is shared with Qatar.

Israel conducts new wave of airstrikes on Iranian missile launchers
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said Tuesday its forces struck several locations in western Iran, hitting "dozens" of missile launchers as the arch-foes traded fire for a fifth straight day. "A short while ago, the Israeli air force completed a series of strikes in western Iran," a military statement said. "As part of the strikes, a number of sites and dozens of surface-to-surface missile launchers were struck." The Israeli military said earlier Tuesday that it killed senior Iranian commander Ali Shadmani in an overnight strike on a "command centre in the heart of Tehran" – just four days after his predecessor, Gholam Ali Rashid, was killed in a similar Israeli raid. It also said it had targeted multiple missile and drone sites in western Iran overnight, including infrastructure, launchers and storage facilities, with black-and-white footage showing some of them exploding. Iranian media reported two explosions in the western city of Tabriz. Despite mounting calls to de-escalate, neither side has backed off from the blitz that began Friday, when Israel launched an unprecedented aerial campaign targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities.--AFP
