Yeo said both leaders have reaffirmed their intention to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, green growth, infrastructure, digital transformation, and the defence industry. UK Reaffirms ASEAN Commitment Through FPDA, Security Cooperation
By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- The United Kingdom (UK) has reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace and stability by strengthening cooperation with ASEAN member states under Malaysia's chairmanship, through international legal frameworks and long-standing defence arrangements. UK High Commissioner to Malaysia Ajay Sharma said this includes the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), a security partnership involving Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as adherence to global norms such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which underpins maritime stability in the region. bootstrap slideshow 'As part of our relationship with Malaysia, we are working bilaterally, regionally and internationally to promote stability and create the conditions for economic growth. 'Through agreements such as the law of the sea, and cooperation with Malaysia and other countries in the region, we aim to ensure that international agreements are respected and that any differences are resolved diplomatically and through dialogue,' Sharma told Bernama after appearing on the Bernama TV programme The Diplomatic Dispatch on Thursday. Established in 1971, the FPDA is a multilateral security arrangement formed in the context of Britain's military withdrawal from the 'East of Suez', to support the defence and stability of Malaysia and Singapore following their respective independence and separation. Since its establishment over 50 years ago, the FPDA has evolved to cover a broader range of security tasks, including air defence, maritime security, and counter-terrorism, as demonstrated in major annual exercises. Sharma noted that ASEAN plays an essential role in fostering inclusive dialogue and multilateral cooperation on regional and global challenges. 'ASEAN is great because it brings together, with ASEAN centrality and inclusivity at its heart, a group of countries that we in the UK can engage with on a range of important issues.

Iran Urges IAEA To Act Against Israel
Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi during the Solidarity Visit to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Tuesday. By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Iran has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take strong actions against Israel's blatant aggression on its territory. Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi said the IAEA should condemn Israel's actions and prevent further violations of international laws. bootstrap slideshow "Israel, as a non-member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), attacks the country which is a member of the NPT, so the IAEA must have a very strong position against Israel and stop them from this aggression,' he told reporters after meeting some 50 representatives from Malaysian non-governmental organisation during a solidarity visit at the Embassy here, Tuesday. The visit was led by the president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM), Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid. To a question whether Iran will leave the NPT, Valiollah said Iran remains committed to the treaty. Iran has been a signatory to NPT since 1970. Iran on Monday said that the authorities will decide whether to withdraw from the NPT, following IAEA's report that found Iran is in breach of its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years. Meanwhile, Azmi said MAPIM will hold a peaceful rally in solidarity with the Iranian people on June 20. The group is expected to march from Masjid Tabung Haji after Friday prayers to the Embassy of the United States where it will submit a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining its stance and demands in regards to the escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran. Regional tension has escalated since Friday after Israel launched coordinated air strikes on multiple sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies. Urban Renewal Act Offers Significant Benefits, Overhang Remains A Concern -- Propertyguru Malaysia
REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS By Durratul Ain Ahmad Fuad and Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Urban Renewal Act, expected to be tabled in Parliament this July, could bring significant benefits such as preserving heritage, revitalising communities and generating economic impact, said PropertyGuru Malaysia country manager Kenneth Soh. bootstrap slideshow He said the Act must be implemented thoughtfully and tailored within local contexts, with deep consideration for existing communities, cultural heritage, and livelihoods. "It has to be a very hyper-localised approach depending on the area in question. The government is rightly consulting with all parties, trying to understand the nuances; that's commendable. 'We'll see how that develops. The effort of understanding all the stakeholders involved is necessary," he told reporters after a media briefing here today. He also noted that international examples have shown how urban renewal, when conducted fairly, can yield meaningful benefits for local communities. "We've seen some private initiatives in Malaysia that focus on preserving the heritage of certain areas. For example, small-scale redevelopment projects in Petaling Street have successfully retained the historical essence of the location while repurposing old buildings for new uses and integrating sustainable features. 'These efforts have transformed the area into a lively spot, frequented by young people and tourists alike,' he said.
