Indian ‘X‘ accounts withheld after Operation Sindoor restored

The Hindu27-05-2025

Even as a clutch of Indian accounts on X, formerly Twitter, geared up to challenge their accounts' censorship in India from May 7 onwards, the Union government unblocked access to many of them, pre-empting a court hearing. On May 17, , a New Delhi-based online outlet, was restored after 10 days of being 'withheld' on government orders from viewers in India.
While much of the 8,000 accounts on X — the only platform to disclose statistics on the scale of blocking orders it received in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor — were Pakistani, many Indian and non-Pakistani handles were restricted from view as well. The orders were sent under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Arpit Sharma, a content creator with 3.4 lakh followers on Instagram, had his X account withheld on May 8. He got in touch with a lawyer who was also in the process of preparing a legal challenge to the blocking of Maktoob and The Kashmiriyat, an Anantnag-based news outlet. 'Just before our case was to be listed [in the Supreme Court], my account got restored,' Mr. Sharma said on May 17.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology did not respond to a query regarding the accounts' blocking, and Mr. Sharma said he had received no communication from the government regarding the withholding of his account. Anuradha Bhasin, a senior journalist in Kashmir, has also had her account restored, as has the outlet Free Press Kashmir.
4PM News, a YouTube outlet, was also restored, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court on May 13. Mr. Sibal asked the court to continue considering the petition, to hold 2009 blocking rules unconstitutional. The petition was subsequently tagged with related matters.
There were other outlets whose censorship was resolved in a far shorter time frame: BBC Urdu was withheld on May 9, but was available again within three days; the Chinese state-run news outlet Global Times and Türkiye's TRT World were both withheld and restored within a day.
The New Delhi-based Software Freedom Law Centre, India (SFLC) said that while misinformation was concerning, 'the widespread blocking of social media accounts without prior notice or an opportunity to contest takedowns is neither just nor effective.' The non-profit has 'filed a PIL in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of Rule 16 and the reading down of Rules 8 and 9 of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009, for violating Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Constitution,' it said.

Israel says it found body of Gaza chief Mohammed Sinwar in tunnel beneath hospital

The Israeli military has confirmed that the body of senior Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar was found in a tunnel beneath a hospital in Gaza, weeks after he was killed in an airstrike. Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar. read more A video released by the Israeli army shows Muhammad Sinwar, brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, travelling in a car through a tunnel near the Erez crossing, close to the Israel-Gaza border, amid the ongoing conflict on December 17, 2023. (Photo: Reuters) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed today that the body of senior Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar has been found in a tunnel beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike on May 13. Sinwar, 49, was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7 attack on Israel. Yahya was shot dead by IDF soldiers eight months ago. Both brothers were born—and killed—in the Khan Yunis area. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Mohammed Sinwar, once nicknamed 'The Shadow' by Israeli intelligence for his ability to evade capture, took part in the 2011 deal that freed Yahya Sinwar in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. He avoided even his father's funeral to stay hidden, but the Shin Bet eventually tracked his movements and targeted him. A joint statement by the IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that Sinwar and Rafah Brigade Commander Mohammad Shabaneh were killed in an underground command center beneath the hospital. Items belonging to them, along with intelligence materials and other bodies, were also recovered. Footage released by the IDF showed a body being dragged from a tunnel under the hospital. Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the operation, calling Sinwar an 'arch-murderer' and warning remaining Hamas leaders that they are next. He specifically named Gaza-based commander Az al-Din al-Haddad and Qatar-based leader Khalil al-Hayya. The May 13 strike also killed Hamas commander Muhammad Shabana and senior figure Mahdi Kuwar. Hamas's October 7 attack killed at least 1,180 people and saw 252 hostages taken. Of the 55 hostages still in Gaza, 32 are believed to be dead.

Remove Ads Popular in Epaper US' General Electric (GE) will vie for the contract to make engines for the Indian Air Force 's fifth-generation stealth fighter or advanced medium combat aircraft , chairman and chief executive Larry Culp told ET in an said the aerospace major considers India a strategically important market for both the civil and defence aerospace businesses.'We are very interested,' he said. 'If you look at what we're doing with the Tejas with our 404 engines, we are right in the middle of probably what matters most in that regard. The US and India enjoy a very strong relationship. So we are here, we want to be supportive and are engaged so we possibly can be.'Last month, India announced a long-awaited plan to fast-track the development of an indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter. The announcement came days after Operation Sindoor against of the most critical components—a high-thrust engine—will likely be developed through a joint venture with a foreign manufacturer. GE will face competition on this from rivals such as Safran and is also stepping up the delivery of jet engines to plane maker Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) for the Tejas Mark-1A fighter, which has been much delayed. In March, GE delivered the first of 99 F-404 engines, around two years behind schedule.'That is our intent and we've communicated that to everyone,' Culp said. 'We are working with the suppliers to ramp their capability. We're making good progress. I just look at April and May of this year compared to where we were in the first quarter—we've seen a double-digit increase in the number of receipts.'IAF chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh recently voiced concerns about delays in the procurement of critical military military programmes and commercial airline sales are increasingly being delayed due to the inability of manufacturers to ramp up production. Culp said that though multiple actions are being taken to lessen the impact, it will be a while before the problem is solved.'We are making a tremendous amount of progress not only in GE but across the industry,' he said. 'But when you look at the demand expectations that only increase every year, we're going to be talking about supply chain for a while. That's just the nature of the challenge where we are in a super cycle.'GE will also look to set up a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility for civilian aircraft engines in India once the volume increases. 'I think that's more a matter of when, as opposed to if,' he said. 'We want to make sure we have the underlying volume in the marketplace that would support those investments.'GE has more than 1,400 engines operating in India, powering both narrow and wide body aircraft and an order book for around 2,500 more. 'The number is sufficient to say that India is a priority country for us,' Culp you look at what we're doing with the Tejas with 404 engines, we are right in the middle of probably what matters most...
