Pensioner ACDC fan battles back from stroke for Murrayfield gig

"I've got a walker to help me walk, and I've been walking around the garden for 10 minutes every day to get me fit for it."
A rock n roll gran who survived a stroke earlier this year has vowed nothing will stop her from seeing AC/DC storm the stage in Edinburgh tomorrow.

Wilma McKenzie, 87, from Penicuik, Midlothian, was left struggling to speak after experiencing a stroke in February. The gran had been spending the day with her daughter, when she noticed her face drooping and Wilma struggled to speak.

The gran explained: "My daughter was speaking to me, and suddenly said 'oh, your face is twisting'. She called the doctors and they took me straight to the infirmary.

'I didn't have any twists or turns or anything like that, I just couldn't speak. I try hard and sometimes I'm fine and other times I can struggle. That's the only lasting impact.
'I didn't have any issues with my balance after the stroke it was just my speech. It's just one of those things; everybody is different after a stroke.'
After spending a couple of days in hospital Wilma said she felt lucky, as she suffered no lasting effects beyond some trouble with her speech.
Now, Wilma, who lives with her husband Kenny, is buzzing to see the band's first performance in Scotland since they played Hampden in Glasgow 10 years ago. She has even been practicing walking up and down her garden to get fit enough for the gig.
Hoping to see the show with her son Scott, she wants to show that aphasia doesn't have to hold you back.
Wilma said: 'I've always said a little AC/DC would never hurt anybody! I'm into rock and roll music and I was listening to Planet Rock on the radio when Scott told me that AC/DC were playing Murrayfield. I texted him saying I'd treat him if he could get tickets.

'I've said even if they have to wheel or carry me into Murrayfield, I'll be there to see them. I'm going! I just don't want to aphasia to stop me doing things I want to do. I know it's different for others, but I won't allow myself to lie down to it.
"The nurse at the hospital came to see me, and I said to her 'I've just got a ticket for AC/DC and I'm still hopeful of going'. She said she found that inspirational.

"It was definitely something to work towards. I've got a walker to help me walk, and I've been walking around the garden for 10 minutes every day to get me fit for it. I don't know if I'll be down the front though."
Suzy Thomson, a nurse with Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland, gave Wilma support and advice as she recovered.
She said: "Wilma is a very social lady but had lost confidence following her stroke. On my last home visit Wilma said she was starting to go out again to see friends and had been back to her club, the Evergreens, which was lovely to hear.

"Even when she was finding it very challenging to communicate, Wilma's strength of character and sense of humour were evident, and I'm looking forward to hearing all about the AC/DC gig when I see her for her six-month review."
The legendary rockers will conclude their European stadium tour in Edinburgh on Thursday, August 21.
The band formed in 1973 in Sydney, Australia, and are one of the most influential rock bands in history, with over 200 million albums sold worldwide.
Their 'Back In Black' LP is the 'bestselling album by any band ever' and the 'third bestselling album by any artist' with global sales of 50 million and counting.

Friday The 13th devs reveal new Halloween game with single-player mode

John Carpenter's Halloween is getting adapted into a Dead By Daylight clone, albeit with one key difference. There's been an abundance of asymmetrical horror games based on IP over the past few years, between The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Evil Dead: The Game, and Friday The 13th. All of these have attempted to emulate the success of Dead By Daylight, yet none of them have accrued the same popularity despite largely sharing the same 1v4 formula. Another is now set to enter the fray next year, only this time based on John Carpenter's 1978 classic Halloween. Developed by IllFonic, the studio behind Friday The 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, Halloween is similarly a 1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer title where you either play as Michael Myers or a survivor in Haddonfield. As Michael, you utilise abilities and leverage 'shadows and stealth' to take down enemies, while survivors can arm themselves with household items and weapons to fight back. Based on a Steam description, there will be NPC 'neighborhood patrols' you can command and equip with weapons too, 'to outsmart or even overpower The Shape'. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. If that all sounds fairly familiar, the developer is promising an offline single-player story mode too. While IllFonic is light on details, the game's website describes it as an 'immersive and interactive cinematic experience' which leans into 'exploration and replayability', where you play as Michael Myers. More Trending 'Witness the haunting narrative events surrounding 'The Night He Came Home' through the eyes of Michael Myers in a standalone single-player story mode,' a description reads. It's unclear if this means you'll just be wandering around the multiplayer maps offline, but hopefully it'll be something which can differentiate it from Dead By Daylight – where Michael Myers is already playable as a killer. Halloween, which is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, is slated to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime in 2026. This isn't the first time Halloween has been adapted into a game. In 1983, a Halloween game was released for the Atari 2600, while Halloween-themed DLC was released last year for RetroRealms: Arcade. Brent Hinds, former Mastodon singer-guitarist, dies at 51 in motorcycle crash

Brent Hinds, the former singer-guitarist for the Grammy-winning heavy metal band Mastodon, has died in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta, the band and authorities said. He was 51. Hinds was killed while riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle late Wednesday night when the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn, according to Atlanta police. Hinds was described as 'unresponsive' at the scene. 'We are heartbroken, shocked and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many,' the band said on social media. Mastodon had three albums rise into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart and two that topped the Rock Album chart — 'Emperor of Sand' in 2017 and 'Once More 'round the Sun' in 2014. Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 with bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. Mastodon's third studio album, 2006's 'Blood Mountain,' was their first to reach the Top 40, peaking at No. 32 on the Billboard 200. Hinds left the band in March 2025. No reason for the departure was given. The band said they had 'mutually decided to part ways,' but comments made by Hinds on Instagram indicated a rocky relationship with the members of his former band. 'We're deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we've shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors,' the band said at the time. Mastodon — which forged ferocious metal, progressive wizardry and sludge rock tendencies — earned six Grammy Award nominations, winning one in 2017 for best metal performance for 'Sultan's Curse' from the album 'Emperor of Sand.' Rolling Stone magazine listed Mastodon's 2011 album 'The Hunter' among its best off the year, saying the band had "streamlined their molten thrash into a taut thwump that doesn't pull back one bit on their natural complexity of innate weirdness.' Hinds was due to tour Europe later this year with Fiend Without a Face, a band that was once a side project during his years with Mastodon.

Teen shepherd arrives with pet sheep at school to collect GCSE results

GCSE student Milly Johnson was accompanied by her pet sheep, Kevin, when collecting her results at Tarleton Academy in Lancashire. Johnson, a young shepherd, brought her "best friend" Kevin, a four-year-old North Ronaldsay sheep, for moral support. She stated that Kevin's "chilled" demeanour helped calm her nerves during the results collection. Kevin reportedly accompanies Johnson almost everywhere, having previously attended her prom wearing a matching halter. Watch the video in full above.
