
Hyundai Santa Fe Cargo Test: How Much Fits Behind the Third Row?
There are trends that have emerged after doing almost 200 of these cargo tests, but the most consistent one has been that boxy is better. Case in point: The Hyundai Santa Fe got a lot boxier for its latest generation. It didn't get much bigger outside (about 2 more inches in length, wheelbase and height), but the interior expanded enough to squeeze in a whole extra row of seats. Thank you, boxiness.
That third row is more spacious than what you'll find in a Kia Sorento and a lot of luxury three-row SUVs, but it's still best suited for big kids and small adults. Using it also shrinks cargo capacity from 40.5 to 14.6 cubic feet. That puts the Santa Fe down at the bottom of the pack in terms of cargo space behind the third row, ahead of only the Sorento (12.6 cubes) and Mitsubishi Outlander (11.7 cubes) in terms of non-luxury models. Even the Toyota Highlander is better at 16 cubic feet. None of those are boxy, however. Let's see what difference a box makes.

Chinese state media calls for crackdown on 'zero-mileage used cars'
By Eduardo Baptista BEIJING (Reuters) -The Chinese practice of selling brand new cars as heavily discounted second-hand vehicles to get rid of inventory should be ended, the official newspaper of the country's governing Communist Party said in an article published on Thursday. The People's Daily, which often signals the positions of China's top Party leaders on a variety of issues, called for a crackdown on the practice, also known as zero-mileage used cars, just weeks after Great Wall Motor's Chairman Wei Jianjun publicly condemned it and China's commerce ministry met with Chinese automakers to discuss it. While China's Commerce Ministry did not make public its position, the People's Daily struck a harsh tone, calling out the inflation of sales data motivating Chinese carmakers and urging "tough regulatory action" to restore market order. "This disguised form of price cutting disrupts normal market order and is a striking example of the auto industry's 'involution'," the People's Daily said, using a term popular in China that describes a race to the bottom driven by excessive competition. "Once market competition rules are properly enforced, 'zero-mileage used cars' won't be able to run far — or for long." China is experiencing growing deflationary pressures as U.S. tariffs add to the gloomy mood in the world's No.2 economy. Companies in sectors from fast food to high fashion have been cutting prices amid concerns about oversupply and sluggish household demand. Price wars have gripped the Chinese auto industry in recent years, partly driven by slumping domestic consumption and overcapacity that has left many struggling to meet sales targets. While the sale of zero-mileage used cars is seen by many Chinese automakers as an effective way of clearing out an ever-growing inventory of unsold cars, with domestic and overseas consumers lured by deep discounts on what are still brand new cars, the state-run newspaper listed a litany of negative effects caused by the practice. "For manufacturers, this sales tactic may help reduce inventory in the short term but compresses profit margins, increases losses, and hinders investment in product quality and innovation — ultimately harming sustainable development," the article said. "For consumers, what seems like a good deal in terms of price comes with hidden risks: the loss of first-owner benefits, potential battery degradation, and steeper depreciation when reselling," it continued, adding the practice undermines fair competition, distorts market data, and disrupts both new and used car markets. The People's Daily singled out manufacturers of electric vehicles as needing to move beyond "data worship" and competing on volume, in order to focus on product quality and technological innovation. It did not name any specific automakers. The newspaper also listed measures Chinese regulatory authorities should adopt in order to prevent the sale of zero-mileage used cars, including strengthening oversight of second-hand vehicle registration, establishing a vehicle lifecycle tracking system, and strictly controlling the practice of immediate resale after registration. Halsey Ave. residents want speed bumps installed to combat ‘dangerous' driving
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Some residents on Halsey Avenue in Huntsville say speeding on their street has become a big issue. Now, they're petitioning the City of Huntsville to install speed cushions to slow down drivers. Longtime resident Gail Lee told News 19, 'we've had some near misses on this street.' ALEA warning public of 'Alabama DMV' scam texts Halsey Avenue doesn't have sidewalks, so people who are taking a stroll or walking their pets have to do so on the edge of the road. Lee said she's concerned that one of these days a speeding driver might hit someone. 'That'd be all she wrote,' she said. Lee told News 19 that she's brought her concerns to the City of Huntsville multiple times in recent years. She said a few years back, the Traffic Engineering Department conducted a traffic survey. She said the results were eye opening. Protecting yourself from skin cancer and the sun's lasting effects 'The average speed of the vehicles was 38 miles an hour' Lee said. 'This is a 25 mile an hour zone.' After that, the City of Huntsville installed speed radar signs. However, Lee said, in her opinion, that they are no longer an effective deterrent for drivers. 'It helped for a little while, until I think people realized, it ain't doing nothing' Lee said. Lee told News 19 that she'd like speed cushions to be installed, so drivers are forced to slow down. She recently started a petition to make that happen and went door to door in her neighborhood collecting signatures. 'I had nobody refuse to sign it,' she said. 'Everybody was a 'yes, we're ready for it'.' In order to be considered, the City of Huntsville requires that 75% of residents are in favor of the petition, before it can be approved. Lee said when she hand delivered the petition to the Traffic Engineering Department on Friday, she was told that the city would need to notify 9 residents who didn't participate in the petition. Lee said she feels like the department is understanding where the residents are coming from. 'I think we are all so glad that the city has finally recognized that we have a problem and I hope that they want to fix it,' she said. Lee said that while slowing down may seem inconvenient, it could save lives. 'Nobody likes speed bumps, I mean, I don't like them, but if it will slow one person down, if it will save one person's life, one pets life, one child's life or one old person's life that maybe has stumbled and fell, I mean, it would be worth it to me' she said. 'It's worth it to save somebody.' She said she understands that the City of Huntsville has a process for safety improvements like these, but that she hopes they can find room in the budget to improve safety for residents. Also on Monday, the Huntsville Police Department announced a 'summer slowdown' campaign urging drivers to 'be more aware and slow down.' HPD noted that people need to be especially cautious on 'city streets, neighborhoods where people are out walking, biking and driving.' According to the Huntsville Police Department, speeding is a problem city-wide. HPD revealed that there have been 12 fatal crashes this year, with speed being a 'primary or contributing' factor. HPD told News 19 that between January and May of this year, it issued 2,625 citations and 1,641 written warnings for people exceeding the speed limit by at least 10 mph. 'Enforcement alone won't solve the problem,' HPD Chief Kirk Giles said. 'We must engage with our community to educate drivers on the real risks of speeding, from deadly crashes to the financial and legal consequences they will face' he added. China's decision in April to restrict exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets has tripped up the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. The stockpiling by Hyundai, the world's No.3 automaker along with its affiliate Kia Corp, indicates it is better-placed than many competitors to withstand restrictions that have already impacted production or the supplier network of companies including Ford and BMW. A Hyundai investor relations official said the South Korean automaker had "far more wiggle room" than rivals with regard to rare earths-related supply chain issues affecting the industry, according to the attendee on the investor call, which was not open to the public. The official told investors Hyundai's efforts to diversify supply chains and improve procurement had succeeded and the company expected to be able to produce electric vehicles or hybrid cars without disruptions "for at least about one year," the attendee said. Hyundai also significantly boosted its rare earths inventories during a recent period when China had slightly relaxed its export restrictions, the official said, according to the attendee who spoke on condition of anonymity because the call was private. The South Korean automaker's stockpile of the key minerals had not been reported previously. It was not clear whether the inventory was solely stockpiled by Hyundai and its affiliate Kia or also included stocks held by their suppliers. In a statement to Reuters, Hyundai declined to comment on specific inventory details or procurement strategies. "We continuously evaluate market conditions to ensure operational stability and maintain a diversified global supply chain," Hyundai said. "As part of our standard business practices, we maintain appropriate inventory levels to support uninterrupted production." China produces around 90% of the world's rare earths, which are essential for the production of vehicles, especially electric vehicle motors. Hyundai Motor Group also holds about a one-year inventory of rare earths-related magnets needed for its mainstay EVs and hybrid vehicles, said a person familiar with the matter, declining to be named due to the sensitivity of the subject. China's dominance of the critical mineral industry is increasingly viewed as a key point of leverage for Beijing in the trade war sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. U.S.-China trade talks were set to extend to a second day in London on Tuesday as top economic officials from the world's two largest economies sought to defuse a bitter dispute that has widened from tariffs to restrictions over rare earths.
