Speculation that the US is on the verge of joining Israel's attack on Iran may unsettle business leaders' current plans and delay activity along the corridor. However, as long as hostilities don't spiral into a catastrophic event, such as the closing of the all-important Strait of Hormuz to shipping, they are unlikely to derail the economic case for a reprisal of the historic Silk Road.
Asian firms are drawn to the Middle East because of the strong appetite in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to leverage their oil resources — and invest trillions of dollars in everything from electric cars to artificial intelligence. The emerging
Silicon Road
, as I like to think of it, is drawing top executives from Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei and Mumbai to opportunities in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. Bankers from London, Singapore and Tokyo aren't too far behind.

The South Korean chaebols are well entrenched in the Middle East, across a gamut of old and new industries. The construction wing of Samsung Group was the primary contractor for Burj Khalifa, the landmark Dubai skyscraper. The Hyundai Motor Group's engineering affiliate has built nuclear-power reactors for the UAE. The conglomerate is now setting up a car-assembly plant in Saudi Arabia. The Korean internet leader Naver Corp. has built large-scale virtual versions of Mecca, Medina and Jeddah for better city planning.
The Koreans' success has become a blueprint for others. Compared with 2020, 9% more of Taiwanese and Indian companies, and 5%-6% more of Chinese and Hong Kong firms, point out the Middle East as a market where they have outbound banking activities.
This isn't a flash in the pan. 'Not only are more companies citing the corridor, they are using more banks to do business in it,' says Ruchirangad Agarwal, the head of Coalition Greenwich's corporate banking practice for Asia and the Middle East.
In terms of usage, European banks' share of this corporate banking market is a stable 29%. That isn't surprising, given the long history of British institutions like HSBC Holdings Plc and Standard Chartered Plc in both Asia and the Middle East. Even BNP Paribas SA — whose predecessor set up operations in China and India in 1860 — came to the Gulf region in the early 1970s in pursuit of petrodollars.

The more interesting bit in the survey is a growing acknowledgement of Chinese and Japanese lenders. About 30% of banking and capital market assets in the Dubai International Financial Center hub are controlled by the top five Chinese banks.
The Asia-Middle East corridor has emerged in response to the ambitious Saudi effort to curb the kingdom's reliance on oil. The $2 trillion that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may end up spending toward this goal will spur demand for everything from physical infrastructure to artificial intelligence software and data centers. Dubai, meanwhile, is getting readying for a flying taxi service.
The picks and shovels for the gold rush will come from Asian firms. They will increasingly tap their home-country banks, or a regional lender like Singapore's DBS Group Holdings Ltd., for working capital. The European trade-finance specialists may have to work hard to hold on to their sway.

‘Indians weren't respected': Aman Gupta on Goa in the 2000s vs today
Aman Gupta, the millionaire co-founder of boAt Lifestyle, spoke about Goa's changing party scenes in a recent podcast. The 43-year-old entrepreneur remembered the time he and his friends partied in the forests of Goa with foreigners. Gupta revealed that there were hardly any Indians at these parties, and certain parts of Goa welcomed only foreigners. This, he said, is in stark contrast with the situation today, as Indian tourists are welcomed happily in Goa. Aman Gupta remembered the early 2000s, when he and his friends would visit Goa and party in the forests of the state. At that time, Anjuna beach was populated by Israeli tourists. 'At Anjuna beach, only Israelis were given a place. I remember, this was a Goa where Indians did not get a place to stay as Israelis used to lead that place. All these Goan people actually did not respect Indians that much,' Gupta remembered. He contrasted that with the situation today, where Indian tourists are welcomed warmly by Goans. 'If you see today, Indians can pay more than anybody else. So India has evolved and Indian tourists are also welcomed now.' Before he became the millionaire co-founder of boAt, Aman Gupta was a regular youngster who liked to party in Goa with his friends. He recalled on The Prakhar Gupta Xperience podcast that there used to be forest parties in Goa that were frequented mostly by foreigners. 'These parties, they were such parties that we didn't know the venue. We would take our scooter and ask our foreigner friends, 'Aaj party kahan hai? (Where is the party tonight?).'' 'In 2000, Bamboo Forest was very popular in Goa,' Gupta recalled. 'This time, when we used to go to Goa, there were no Indians. We were the only Indians there [at Bamboo forest parties],' said the co-founder of boAt.

Why do Indians still increasingly rush to Swiss Banks to park their money
Swiss banks have long been a subject of political debate in India over alleged black money. However, experts argue that these institutions serve broader financial purposes. Former finance minister Arun Jaitley had said, 'Not all Swiss bank money is dirty.' Indian money parked in Swiss banks more than tripled in 2024, reaching 3.54 billion Swiss francs (around Rs 37,600 crore), the Swiss National Bank (SNB) revealed on June 19. This is the highest level since of the increase came from funds held through bank channels and other financial entities, not individual customer accounts, news agency PTI said in a report. Deposits directly from Indian customers rose modestly — up 11% to 346 million Swiss francs (about Rs 3,675 crore). These deposits make up just one-tenth of the total Indian-linked to the SNB, the total CHF 3,545.54 million reflects all liabilities of Swiss banks toward Indian clients. This includes CHF 3.02 billion held through other banks, CHF 346 million in customer accounts, CHF 41 million via fiduciaries or trusts, and CHF 135 million in other instruments like bonds and contrast, these funds had dropped by 70% in 2023, hitting a four-year low of CHF 1.04 billion. The latest rise is therefore seen as a significant rebound, though still short of the all-time high of CHF 6.5 billion in SNB data is based on official reports by banks and does not reveal details about alleged black money or accounts held through entities in other countries. The first data transfer to Indian authorities took place in September 2019. Since then, regular information sharing has continued, including on accounts with suspected links to financial irregularities.'Such exchange of information has taken place in hundreds of cases so far,' according to Swiss Indian-linked money rose sharply, total foreign client funds in Swiss banks fell slightly to CHF 977 billion in 2024 from CHF 983 billion a year earlier. Indian clients held CHF 1.59 billion in assets by the end of 2023 — an increase of 9% rose to the 48th spot globally in terms of funds in Swiss banks, up from 67th last year. However, this is still below the 46th rank it held at the end of neighbouring countries, Pakistan saw a dip to CHF 272 million, while Bangladesh's funds rose sharply to CHF 589 million. Like in India, discussions around black money in Swiss accounts are sensitive topics in both countries.
