Para shuttler Liek Hou overcomes leg injury to win a double in Dubai
Two-time Paralympic champion Liek Hou had not fully recovered from a leg injury but soldiered on and beat teammate Mohd Fareez Anuar 21-12, 22-20 in the men's singles SU5 (upper body impairment) at the Shabab Al Ahli Dubai club yesterday.
The 37-year-old had to fend off a strong challenge from Fareez, 28 in the second game and had to use all his experience to prevail.
Liek Hou then returned to court and combined well with Fareez to win the men's doubles crown after defeating India's Hardik Makkar-Ruthick Ragupathi 21-18, 21-15.
While the tournament was missing several top players from Indonesia, Japan and Taiwan, it was still a good achievement for Liek Hou as he continues to defy his age and injuries.
"As what I can see, most of the top players from Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan Japan and France did not compete in this tournament but it still feels good to win the titles here as my condition is not really good," said Liek Hou.
" I have not fully recovered from my leg injury yet. I managed my condition well though against Fareez. I hope after this, I can recover soon.
"For now, I'm not sure when I can compete again as it depends on my recovery."
Meanwhile, there was also joy for Malaysia when Mohd Ikhwan Ramli emerged champion in the men's singles WH1 (wheelchair) after pulling off an impressive 13-21, 21-18, 21-6 victory over South Korea's 2022 world champion Choi Jung-man.

Birthday smash for para shuttler Fareez in Cardiff
KUALA LUMPUR: It was an early birthday present for Fareez Anuar, who won the men's doubles title with Cheah Liek Hou, at the British and Irish Para Badminton International in Cardiff on Saturday. SU5 shuttler Fareez, had a day earlier, stunned two-time Paralympic champion Liek Hou 23-21, 27-25 in the men's singles semi-finals, but lost to Indonesia's Dheva Anrimusthi 21-17, 21-18 in the final. Fareez later teamed up with Liek Hou to beat Dheva-Hafizh Briliansyah 21-14, 25-23 in the doubles final. Fareez, who turned 29 today, said: "It was a special birthday gift for me. Thank you so much to the team who have always supported us," Fareez wrote on his Instagram. Meanwhile, wheelchair player Ikhwan Ramli pulled off a major upset in the WH1 singles final, defeating 2024 Paris Paralympics silver medallist Choi Jung Man of South Korea 21-19, 15-21, 21-15. However, Ikhwan's bid for a second title in Cardiff was denied in the men's doubles final after he and Noor Azwan Noorlan were beaten by Jung Man-Kim Jung Jun 19-21, 21-11, 21-15.

Rice, who has had senior leadership experience with 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company, will serve as lead executive producer for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Los Angeles. "Our ceremonies will capture the energy, innovation and creativity of Los Angeles as well as the emotion that exists at the heart of every Olympic Games," Rice told Reuters in an interview. "The challenge is to welcome the world in a way that's not only memorable, but truly representative of LA's unique spirit - a city that stands at the crossroads of creativity, sports, and art." The British American producer will shape the creative vision and oversee production of all four ceremonies at two iconic venues: the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the newly built SoFi Stadium. He said his experience with global sporting events like the Super Bowl, World Series, and FIFA World Cup has prepared him for the task, and emphasized that assembling a world-class production team was his top priority. "We need people with deep Olympic experience who can also tap into LA's creativity and energy," he said, adding that the selection of a production company is expected by year's end. LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman expressed enthusiasm for Rice's appointment, citing their 25-year friendship and Rice's unique blend of business, technical, financial and creative skills. "I knew he was our number one draft pick," Wasserman said. Rice, whose projects have earned 51 Academy Award and 293 Emmy nominations, hopes the ceremonies reflect Southern California's spirit of optimism.
