Most expensive pet to insure revealed after claims hit record £1,200,000,000

Metro24-05-2025

Pet owners claimed a record £1.23 billion from insurance firms to help cover vets' bills for sick and injured animals last year.
Dogs led the pack, making up £933 million in claims, followed by cats at £232 million, and £61 million for other pets.
The 2024 total figure was 4% higher than the previous 12 months and marked the third straight year that total payouts by members of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) topped £1 billion.
It said members received 1.8 million claims last year – amounting to nearly 5,000 every day.
The ABI's data also indicates that a record 4.6 million pet owners took out insurance – a 3% increase since 2023 and a third (33%) higher than before the coronavirus pandemic in 2019.
Many people acquired new pets during the coronavirus lockdowns.
Two years ago, Metro's Deputy Editor Claie Wilson's three-year-old cat Nelly got run over and the vets bill went into the thousands. Thankfully, she says, her pet insurance covered it, as the alternative wasn't worth thinking about.
'When Nelly had her accident it was just awful. She went missing for hours and when she finally showed up, she was in a real mess,' remembers Claie. 'She had to have her eye removed and her jaw was shattered, so had to be stapled back together. It meant Nelly had to stay at the vets for a few days and when she came home, she had to be fed by a feeding tube, with special cat food.'
As well as the initial operation, the vets fees for the black and grey tabby included scans, x-rays and medication, which meant that by the time the bill came in, it was just under the maximum of Claie's policy of £5,000.
'Our vets are fantastic and their first question was how much the policy was, so they could work within my financial limits as much as possible,' she explains.
'I didn't want them to skimp on any treatment Nelly might need, but I also knew that it could end up being even more eye-wateringly expensive if I wasn't careful.
'I've had cats for years and shelled out a fortune on insurance I've never needed to use. But with Nelly I'd paid about the equivalent of about £250 when she had her accident, so it was definitely worth having,' adds Claie.
'Of course, it means the premiums have gone up – but it's just bonkers not to have insurance if you can afford it and definitely not worth the financial risk. No one wants to be in a position where they can't save their pet if they need to.'
The average claim cost is £685, the ABI said, but some costs can be much higher. More Trending

The average cost of care needed when a pet eats something they should not, whether it is food which is poisonous to them or a small household item, is around £4,000, the ABI said.
Jonathan Purvis, senior policy adviser, general insurance at the ABI said: 'You can't pull a rabbit out the hat when it comes to paying for veterinary bills, so it's promising to see more people making sensible choices to protect themselves and their pets financially.

What is New World Screwworm and could it spread to humans?

A flesh-eating parasite known as New World Screwworm is moving closer and closer to the US border in Texas. The devastating parasite eats cattle and other animals alive and has travelled north from Central America to Mexico. In response to the spread within 700 miles of the Texas border, Washington halted cattle imports from Mexico in May. But what is New World Screwworm and can it spread to humans? Screwworms are parasitic flies whose females lay eggs in wounds on any warm-blooded animal. Once they do this, the eggs hatch and hundreds of screwworm larvae burrow through living flesh using their sharp mouths. This helps them to feed on and make the wound bigger, which eventually kills the host if left untreated. It means that when screwworms infect a cow, something like a tiny scrape, a recent brand or a healing ear tag can quickly become a gaping wound. Screwworms were eradicated from the US in the 1960s after researchers released massive numbers of sterilised male screwworm flies that mate with wild female screwworms to produce infertile eggs. New World Screwworm typically impacts livestock but it can also affect humans. Dr Sonja Swiger, entomologist at Texas A&M University, told Metro: 'While it is rare for humans to get an infestation of NWS, it is not impossible. 'The flies are known to lay their eggs on any warm-blooded animal, but prefer livestock and wildlife over birds and humans, with dogs being another known target. 'One main reason humans are on the rare side is that most will keep their wounds clean or follow hygiene practices that might exclude them.' Dr Timothy Goldsmith, a veterinary medicine professor at the University of Minnesota, said homeless people are especially vulnerable to infestation. This is because they sleep outside and have less access to hygiene products and medical care. Dr Swiger recommended that if people are travelling to areas dealing with an outbreak or endemic for NWS, they should protect themselves and animals they may bring with them from attacks. This includes doing checks on animals before entry/re-entry into countries that are not endemic for NWS. 'The fly can only travel 10-20 km on its own, so animal movement or humans moving with infestations is of concern,' she said. Countries where NWS is endemic include Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and countries in South America, with cases spreading north to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Mexico. Dr Swiger said that it is not yet clear what is behind the drive north, though animal movement is a major concern. A factory designed to breed and sterilise screwworms in Panama is releasing 100 million sterile flies every week, but the flies have already passed through the narrowest stretches of land in Panama and Mexico. Screwworms cannot fly more than 12 miles on their own, but they can cover large distances while burrowed inside their hosts. The spread to the US would cause problems with livestock population and economic concerns. More Trending 'The largest impact would be to the livestock and wildlife industries if NWS were to return to the United States,' Dr Swiger said. 'That is currently being estimated in the multi-billions of dollars. With an estimated impact of up to $2 billion for livestock and $9 billion for wildlife.' It was announced by the US Department of Agriculture on Tuesday that it would invest $21million (£15.6million) to convert a fruit fly factory in Mexico to produce sterile screwworms. It said the border would likely reopen to cattle imports by the end of the year. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Eamonn Holmes issues concerning health update after nasty fall

Eamonn Holmes has issued fans with a concerning health update after recently suffering a fall during a live TV broadcast. GB News viewers were given an almighty shock when the news host, 65, toppled off his chair live on-air during a chat with social commentator Charlie Rowley. After hitting the floor, the former This Morning presenter shouted to the other guests that he was 'fine, fine, fine' and urged them to 'carry on' during the incident. Eamonn initially blamed the 'wonky wheels' on his chair, which left his co-hosts gasping and caused one off-camera producer to shout, 'Oh my gosh!' However, after initially downplaying the fall, saying he wasn't the only person in the GB News studio to have taken a tumble, he's now issued a heartbreaking update. The Northern Irish broadcaster made the admission during a segment on his GB News breakfast show, which sees him present alongside Ellie Costello. Joined by Tim Vincent and Dawn Neesom to delve into the latest headlines, they discussed the research into exercising helping to reduce a person's risk of developing cancer. 'This makes me feel awful, because I would have been pro-exercise, but I can't move,' Eamonn shared. 'I'm in a wheelchair now.' He added: 'I can't put on trainers, I can't change, I can't go to the showers, I can't do things, I can't stand up. 'There are a lot of people who are incapable of exercising, and therefore, rightly so, an increase of cancer growing.' Offering sympathy, Tim told him: 'You're obviously in a really difficult position. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'Any exercise I think is going to help, especially for these people who have had cancer once and can get out there.' Eamonn has required mobility aids for some time now. He's had to deal with numerous complications in recent years, including slipped discs in his back, ongoing spinal issues, and a double hip replacement. Following the fall, GB News took a six-minute advert break, after which Eamonn joked that he was 'still alive' but that he 'didn't like' the chairs in the studio anymore. He said afterwards: '[The fall] was a shock for me because I had a fall two weeks ago in my bathroom that hospitalised me and that hit me right in the back. And that hit me again right in the back. Really, really sore, really sore.' A source then told The Mail: 'Everyone at GB News is rallying round Eamonn. He's had an horrendous couple of years, but he has the full support of the channel and all of his colleagues. 'Eamonn's health problems have presented challenges for him and for the channel, but bosses are working on ways they can help him in any way they can.' In 2016, the breakfast TV presenter revealed that he'd undergone hip surgery after complaining of persistent pain for a while beforehand. More Trending Two years later, he came down with shingles, and in 2022, after the Covid-19 pandemic, he underwent back surgery after suffering from chronic pain in his back for months. Eamonn confessed that he 'thought he was dead' after a fall at his home earlier this year, which saw his feet 'fly up in the air' after crashing onto a 'cold, hard, slippery floor'. He explained: 'I was very worried about me. [I] fell on the bathroom floor and once I was down, I couldn't get up. It was the worst bang to my head and shoulder. View More » 'I went down and I said, 'I'm dead' I have never had a bang to the head as sore and as powerful as that before. I lay there and I thought, 'Where's the blood?'' There was nothing, no blood, no split, nothing like that.' Got a story? Mum finds 'more than 100 maggots' in tin of tuna she bought for toddler's lunch

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A mum was horrified to discover 'more than a 100 maggots' in a tin of tuna she bought for her toddler's lunch. Bethany Bryson picked up a John West multi-pack for £3.98 at Asda's Edinburgh Supercentre store on May 23. When she arrived home she put her one-year-old son, Hudson Gray, down for a nap and went to make him a tuna and sweetcorn baguette for lunch. But, she said, as she took the top tin from the multi-pack stack, three maggots 'flew' at her. She then looked down to see what she believes was another 100 or so maggots in the tin. 'I was in shock and disbelief,' she recalled. 'You know when your skin starts to crawl? 'I hadn't even opened the actual tin itself. The tin was open with all those maggots floating about. 'I was sick. I didn't eat that whole day. I'm never going to touch tuna again. I wanted to jump in a shower with bleach because I felt disgusting.' She described the smell as 'unholy', adding: 'Tuna doesn't smell nice at the best of times but this didn't even smell like off fish or anything like that. I didn't know what it smelled like. It was potent. It was disgusting.' Bethany contacted the Asda store she bought the pack from, where staff said they would remove any remaining tins from their shelves and asked her to bring in her tins for testing. After donning two pairs of disposable gloves, she fished through her outside bins to retrieve the tins and put them in two Ziploc bags and a nappy bag. Bethany returned the tins to the store and was offered a £20 voucher as a gesture of goodwill. She had also phoned Asda's customer service team who passed the complaint onto head office. They later apologised for the experience and offered her a £5 voucher. But she said: 'I was heated when I got that response and I replied back saying, '£5 when I was about to feed this to my one-year-old son, that's not acceptable.' 'I was like, 'I do not want my little boy getting sick from that' because he obviously roams about the floor. 'He's walking but he does crawl about the kitchen sometimes so the last thing I want is remnants of maggots being on the floor for him to get unwell. 'I was actually horrified because if those maggots hadn't been fully developed into the size they were and I hadn't noticed they were in the tin I could have fed that to my son and that just makes me feel sick, it's horrible.' John West have also apologised and offered her a £10 voucher as a gesture of goodwill. A spokesperson said: 'At John West, the safety of our consumers and the quality of our products are our highest priorities and we take this incident extremely seriously. 'No living animal could have survived the high-temperature sterilisation used in our production process. 'Based on the information currently available, it appears the can was damaged after packaging and during transit within the supply chain. 'This damage compromised the seal and allowed environmental contamination, ultimately leading to spoilage. More Trending 'While this appears to be an isolated incident, John West is working closely with logistics partners to ensure that product is being handled with care and that such an issue does not occur again.' An Asda spokesperson said that as soon the store became aware of the issue they removed all products with the same batch code from their shelves. They added said: 'This product was supplied by a branded partner who have confirmed it was damaged in transit through the supply chain.' The spokesperson said they had not received any similar complaints from other customers. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page.
