Thousands of intimate images found in hacking investigation of former NFL and Michigan coach

DETROIT (AP) — Investigators have seized thousands of intimate photos and videos from a former Baltimore Ravens and University of Michigan assistant football coach who is charged with hacking into the computer accounts of college athletes, the U.S. Justice Department told victims.
The disclosure came in a court filing Tuesday in a lawsuit against Matt Weiss and the university. Lawyers for victims included an email that was sent by the government after he was indicted in March.
Weiss got access to the social media, email and cloud storage accounts of more than 2,000 athletes, as well as more than 1,300 students or alumni from schools across the U.S., in an effort to find private images, primarily of women, according to the indictment.
The email further describes and quantifies what was found by investigators.
"Thousands of candid, intimate photographs and videos have been seized from the defendant's electronic devices and from his cloud storage accounts. Many show victims naked. Some show victims engaged in explicit sexual acts,' the Justice Department's Mega Victim Case Assistance Program said.
Weiss has pleaded not guilty to identity theft and unauthorized computer access, from 2015 to 2023. He and his lawyer have refused to comment about the case.
Near the end of the alleged scheme, Weiss was Michigan's co-offensive coordinator in 2022 when the Wolverines finished 13-1 and played in the College Football Playoff. He was fired in 2023 during an investigation of his computer use. He had earlier spent more than a decade with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.
Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, who was Weiss' boss at Michigan, called the allegations 'shocking.' His brother, John Harbaugh, coach of the Ravens, used the same word when talking to reporters at the NFL's annual spring meeting.
Parker Stinar, a lawyer who has filed one of many lawsuits against Weiss, the university and an outside technology vendor, wants a judge to order them to start turning over evidence of what happened. The university has not commented on the lawsuits and has weeks to formally respond in federal court.

Spirit Airlines plane passenger calls in fake bomb threat after missing flight: Officials

A Michigan man has been arrested after missing his flight to Los Angeles and calling in a fake bomb threat after being made to book another flight, officials said. The incident took place last Thursday at approximately 6:25 a.m. at Detroit Metropolitan Airport when an individual, later identified as 23-year-old John Charles Robinson of Monore, Michigan, 'used a cell phone to call into Spirit Airlines and conveyed false information about a bomb threat to Flight 2145 departing from Detroit Metro bound for Los Angeles,' according to a statement from United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. from the Eastern District of Michigan United States Attorney's Office. MORE: US Marshals arrest Dominican man wanted in quadruple homicide, including victims aged 2 and 4 'During the call, Robinson stated in part, 'I was calling about 2145… because I have information about that flight,' and 'there's gonna be someone who's gonna try to blow up the airport,' and 'there's gonna be someone that's gonna try to blow up that flight, 2145,'' according to the affidavit. 'After giving a description of an individual, he then stated: 'they're going to be carrying a bomb through the TSA,' and 'they're still threatening to do it, they're still attempted to do it, they said it's not going to be able to be detected. Please don't let that flight board.'' The flight was immediately canceled, officials said and the flight's passengers and crew were deplaned for safety precautions. MORE: Climber falls over 3,000 feet to his death off tallest mountain in North America 'Bomb sniffing dogs and FBI agents were deployed to sweep the airplane, officials said. 'No bomb or explosives were found.' Federal agents investigating the bomb threat soon learned that Robinson was booked on Flight 2145 but missed the flight and was told at the gate that he needed to rebook. 'FBI agents subsequently arrested Robinson when he returned to the airport to depart on another flight bound for Los Angeles,' officials said. After taking Robinson into custody, authorities played back the phone call that was made for him. "Robinson also stated that the phone number that called the bomb threat in to Spirit Airlines was his phone number (and had been for approximately 6 years), that the target cellular device was his device, and he gave written consent for a search of his device." Robinson was subsequently charged with two charges. The first being use of a cellphone to threaten/maliciously convey false information concerning an attempt or alleged attempt to damage/destroy an airplane by means of an explosive and the second being false information and hoaxes. MORE: Tourists at beach house find human remains dating back 200 years 'No American wants to hear the words 'bomb' and 'airplane' in the same sentence. Making this kind of threat undermines our collective sense of security and wastes valuable law enforcement resources,' said U.S. Attorney Gorgon. 'Anyone who threatens to bomb an aircraft and endanger public safety will be swiftly investigated and brought to justice,' said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office. 'The alleged bomb threat prompted a coordinated response by our FBI Detroit Joint Terrorism Task Force, in partnership with the Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department and the U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service, leading to the arrest of John Robinson as he attempted to board another flight at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. We remain committed to protecting the public and confronting those who seek to spread fear in our communities.' MORE: Black bear found sitting on stove inside home after crashing through ceiling Robinson appeared in federal court in Detroit on Friday afternoon and was released on a $10,00 bond, according to court documents. His next court appearance will be June 27 for a preliminary examination. The case against Robinson is being investigated by special agents from the FBI and is currently ongoing. The Brief A Detroit mother has been charged with murder, torture, and child abuse in the March death of her 3-year-old son. Prosecutors say Brianna Simmons' son had been seen several times by Child Protective Services with injuries, including broken bones, and that she allowed her boyfriend to assault the child. Simmons is being held without bond, and charges are pending against her boyfriend, who is not yet in custody. DETROIT (FOX 2) - For several months, Child Protective Services removed a 3-year-old boy from his mom's care, only for him to end up back at her home. That ended in March, when the Wayne County Prosecutor says the child died. Now his mom has been charged. Brianna Simmons was arraigned Monday on murder, torture, and child abuse charges for the death of her son, who died in March after several removals by CPS. Simmons was arraigned via Zoom on Monday where she did not say anything and a not-guilty plea was entered by her court-issued attorney. According to prosecutors, when CPS removed the child from the home, the boy had injuries at different times, including broken bones. The Wayne County Prosecutor said Simmons allowed her boyfriend to live and stay at the family home and assault her son. The prosecutor also said she ignored obvious abuse and went to five different facilities to try and get care for her son. According to the prosecutor, this was done to hide the cause of the child's injuries. Her boyfriend is not in custody at this time, but charges are pending. Simmons is being held without bond and has been ordered not to have contact with her older children. The Source Simmons was in court for arraignment on Monday, where details on the charges were revealed.
