Thousands of intimate images found in hacking investigation of former NFL and Michigan coach

Yahoo08-04-2025

DETROIT (AP) — Investigators have seized thousands of intimate photos and videos from a former Baltimore Ravens and University of Michigan assistant football coach who is charged with hacking into the computer accounts of college athletes, the U.S. Justice Department told victims.
The disclosure came in a court filing Tuesday in a lawsuit against Matt Weiss and the university. Lawyers for victims included an email that was sent by the government after he was indicted in March.
Weiss got access to the social media, email and cloud storage accounts of more than 2,000 athletes, as well as more than 1,300 students or alumni from schools across the U.S., in an effort to find private images, primarily of women, according to the indictment.
The email further describes and quantifies what was found by investigators.
"Thousands of candid, intimate photographs and videos have been seized from the defendant's electronic devices and from his cloud storage accounts. Many show victims naked. Some show victims engaged in explicit sexual acts,' the Justice Department's Mega Victim Case Assistance Program said.
Weiss has pleaded not guilty to identity theft and unauthorized computer access, from 2015 to 2023. He and his lawyer have refused to comment about the case.
Near the end of the alleged scheme, Weiss was Michigan's co-offensive coordinator in 2022 when the Wolverines finished 13-1 and played in the College Football Playoff. He was fired in 2023 during an investigation of his computer use. He had earlier spent more than a decade with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.
Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, who was Weiss' boss at Michigan, called the allegations 'shocking.' His brother, John Harbaugh, coach of the Ravens, used the same word when talking to reporters at the NFL's annual spring meeting.
Parker Stinar, a lawyer who has filed one of many lawsuits against Weiss, the university and an outside technology vendor, wants a judge to order them to start turning over evidence of what happened. The university has not commented on the lawsuits and has weeks to formally respond in federal court.

Michigan State Police helicopter tracks suspects who fled after attempted traffic stop

A Michigan State Police patrol helicopter crew helped officers track a fleeing motorist Wednesday night on Interstate 96 in Metro Detroit. A road patrol officer attempted a traffic stop about 10 p.m. on westbound I-96 near Outer Drive, but the driver sped off. The state police helicopter named Trooper 2 happened to be in the area and its air crew followed the fleeing vehicle, noticing it stop on Stout Street just south of Acacia in the city of Detroit. The air crew then reported three people running out of the stopped car, all were headed eastbound. The driver, identified as a 30-year-old Detroit man, was later arrested in an apartment complex near where the vehicle was abandoned. He was lodged at the Detroit Detention Center, pending review. "We are fortunate this suspect did not hurt anyone in his attempt to run from troopers," Michigan State Police F/Lt. Mike Shaw said. While this incident happened in the city of Detroit, the prosecutor for nearby Macomb County announced just this week a stricter prosecution policy on fleeing and eluding charges. Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said there has been a noticeable increase in such incidents in his community during the past several years, including ones that resulted in serious injury or fatal crashes.

Suspect in custody after threats made against law enforcement, Rockwood police say

A suspect was taken into custody after threats were made against law enforcement, the Rockwood (Michigan) Police Department reported. The arrest was made without incident about 9 p.m. Wednesday with officers from Rockwood police working with Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The person's name was not released, pending court arraignment. Details of the incident were not disclosed, but police said it involved "credible threats." "All information will be reviewed by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for determination of what charges the individual will face," the report from police chief Randolph Krause said. "The arrest was made possible through the dedication and solid investigation of our detective bureau and the cooperation of our local and federal partners. I would like to thank the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, the United States Border Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in this matter." The city of Rockwood is in Wayne County, but the community borders Monroe County. Its police department has been in the news lately because Rockwood police pulled over a car that Maykol Bogoya-Duarte was traveling in on May 20. Bogoya-Duarte, who was a high school student in Detroit, was subsequently arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and is expected to be deported.
