UCLA-LSU game at CWS suspended due to rain, will resume Tuesday with Tigers leading 5-3
Associated Press
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series game between UCLA and LSU was suspended Monday night after steady rain and lightning moved into the Omaha area.
The game will resume on Tuesday morning.
LSU led 5-3 after three innings when the grounds crew rolled out the tarp as storm clouds moved over Charles Schwab Field. Rain had fallen for about three hours when the NCAA announced the game would resume at 11 a.m. EDT.
UCLA scored three runs against Anthony Eyanson in the first inning. The Tigers came back to take the lead in the bottom half with Jared Jones hitting a three-run home run off Landon Stump.
Jones' team-best 21st homer barely cleared the fence in right-center and put LSU in front 4-3. The Tigers added another run in the third.
The UCLA-LSU winner will advance to a bracket final Wednesday. The loser will play Arkansas in an elimination game Tuesday night.
More than 20,000 turned out for Monday night's game, which followed Gage Wood's no-hitter in Arkansas' 3-0 win over Murray State. Among fans cheering for LSU were Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes and his influencer girlfriend Livvy Dunne. Skenes was the 2023 Most Outstanding Player when LSU won the national championship.

Katie Boulter says death threats and abuse highlight dark side of tennis betting
LONDON (AP) — British tennis player Katie Boulter has told the BBC she received death threats targeting her and her family during the French Open, saying in an interview that online abuse has become the norm and that she is worried about the impact it will have on younger players. Boulter, who is 28-year-old and ranked No. 39 in the WTA, said she believes many of the abusive messages are sent by people who are placing bets on tennis matches, The message threatening her loved ones was sent during her French Open first-round match against Carole Monnet on May 29. After losing the first-set tie-break, Boulter won the match 6-7 (4), 6-1. 6-1. But the loss of the tiebreaker prompted the outrage. 'Hope you get cancer,' said one message. Another mentioned damaging her 'grandmother's grave if she's not dead by tomorrow' and 'candles and a coffin for your entire family.' A third said: 'Go to hell, I lost money my mother sent me.' Boulter, who shared with the BBC screenshots of the messages, said she is worried about the toll the widespread abuse takes on younger players. 'At the very start of my career, it's probably something I took very personally... getting comments about the way you look,' she said. 'It becomes more apparent every single time you go on your phone. 'I think it increases in number and it also increases in the level of things that people say. I don't think there's anything off the cards now.' Many other players have previously reported online abuse . In a bid to try to protect athletes from that sort of abuse, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Women's Tennis Association (WTA), All England Lawn Tennis Club and United States Tennis Association in 2023 launched the Threat Matrix. The program monitors public-facing social accounts for abusive and threatening content on social networks. It also provides support for players. According to statistics provided to the BBC by data science firm Signify, the ITF and WTA, about 8,000 abusive, violent or threatening messages were sent publicly to 458 tennis players through their social media accounts in 2024. Boulter, who received abuse after wins as well as losses, said a lot of it comes from people who have placed bets on her matches. 'As far as death threats, it's just not something you want to be reading straight after an emotional loss,' she said. 'A lot of the time you get it after you win as well.' According to Signify, angry gamblers sent 40% of all detected abuse, with messages clearly related to betting activity because of the timing or content of the abuse. Boulter said she is getting ready for the level of abuse to increase when she plays at Wimbledon, her home Grand Slam. The grass-court tournament starts June 30. ___ AP tennis: and

Ratnayake takes 2 wickets on debut for Sri Lanka as Bangladesh struggles in first test
Associated Press GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Offspinner Tharindu Ratnayake took two wickets in his test debut for Sri Lanka on Tuesday as Bangladesh struggled to 90 for three in the first session of the series. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat in the first match of the new World Test Championship cycle but the morning session belonged to 29-year-old Ratnayake, who got his test cap after churning out wickets in the domestic circuit. It was right-arm seamer Asitha Fernando who set the tone early. Still riding the bounce from a productive county stint with Glamorgan, he had Anamul Haque caught behind for a duck. Then came Ratnayake, the ambidextrous bowler who can turn the ball both ways, and he made his mark in just his fourth over. Shadman Islam, with rigid feet and hands hard, poked at a delivery that spun away and only succeeded in feathering it to Dhananjaya de Silva at slip. Ratnayake wasn't done yet. Mominul Haque, who had been settling in nicely, edged a ball that bounced a shade more than expected. De Silva flew to his left and took a brilliant catch. Just when Bangladesh appeared to be teetering, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim dug in. Their 45-run fourth-wicket stand helped steady the innings somewhat, but their work is far from done. Mushfiqur, unbeaten on 20 at the lunch interval, has gone 13 innings without passing 50, a lean patch by his standards. Shanto looked composed at the other end, stroking three boundaries and a six in his 25. Sri Lanka also handed a first test cap to Lahiru Udara, the seasoned runscorer from the domestic arena, in what will be Angelo Mathews' 119th and last test match for his country. The match at Galle is the first in the 2025-2027 cycle of the World Test Championship, starting just days after South Africa won the title for the first time with a victory over defending champion Australia at Lord's on the weekend. ___ AP cricket: recommended in this topic

A hurricane watch is in effect for southern Mexico as a depression in the Pacific gains strength
MIAMI (AP) — A hurricane watch was in effect Tuesday for southern Mexico as a tropical depression in the eastern Pacific gained strength. The depression was likely to become a tropical storm later Tuesday and a hurricane Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. It had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (56 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph), forecasters said. The depression would be named Erick when its winds reach tropical storm strength of 39 mph (63 kph). It was centered about 495 miles (800 kilometers) southeast of Punta Maldonado in Mexico's Guerrero state and was forecast to approach the coast by late Wednesday. A hurricane watch was posted for a stretch of the Pacific coast from Bahia De Huatulco, which is in Oaxaca state, to Punta Maldonado. A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions, with winds exceeding 74 mph (119 kph), are possible in the area within two days. A tropical storm watch was in effect further south from Salina Cruz to Bahia De Huatulco. Heavy rainfall was forecast for parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero with lighter amounts in Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz states as well as parts of El Salvador and Guatemala.
