Norfolk & Suffolk Magazine Food and Drink awards open for entries
From secluded farm shops and seaside cafes to bustling street food stalls and fine dining restaurants, our region is renowned for offering some truly unforgettable food and drink.
For the first time, the Food and Drink Awards are bringing the two counties together and welcoming entries and nominations from people and businesses across Norfolk and Suffolk that work to create outstanding dishes, champion local produce and provide first-class experiences.
This year, we are working with Bread Hospitality, which is a great supporter of the awards and of Norfolk and Suffolk food and drink.
We have 11 categories, 10 of which are open for entries and nominations, and we want to hear from you – do you have a favourite restaurant or café? Or perhaps a local food or drink product, street food item or specialist food producer that you want more people to know about? Now is your chance to let us know!

This non-entry category recognises an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to Norfolk and Suffolk's food and drink sector.
A panel of judges with a range of industry knowledge will select the winner, who could come from any part of the industry – a grower, producer, cook, restauranteur, retailer, educator or local food and drink champion.
The judges will select someone who is an expert in their field, has a proven track record, inspires colleagues, educates and sets standards that others aim to attain.

Bars, traditional drinking pubs and establishments that have built a reputation for their restaurant and/or bar menu will be considered for this award.
The judges will be looking for great standards of customer service and understanding of a business' market, and entrants should provide a good range and standard of drinks – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
A sense of character that makes a visit to these places a fun, well-rounded experience will also be considered, as will inclusivity and engagement with the community.

The judges will be looking for a food or drink vendor offering exceptional products, whether it's artisanal coffee, indulgent desserts, handcrafted beverages or delicious street-style meals.
Eligible businesses should be based in Norfolk or Suffolk and regularly attend markets, fairs, events and shows.
The judges will be impressed with high-quality offerings, an enticing menu, a commitment to local produce and accessible, competitive pricing.

An increasing number of us are becoming aware of the benefits of local, homegrown food, and that's why the Field to Fork category will acknowledge individuals or businesses with the ability and vision to grow food or drink produce in this region.
These are growers and producers who are passionate about what they do and who have the talent and skill to grow, develop and market outstanding and commercially scalable food or drink produce.
Entrants also need to show environmental credentials and demonstrate a contribution to the local community.

This award is open to any business or individual that has started a food and/or drink venture in the last three years (since April 2022) and has already become a success story or shows promise to become one; this could be a restaurant, pub, producer, café, bakery or even a new catering business.
The winner will be a company that is able to demonstrate a pioneering approach, strong performance over the past year, as well as the potential to flourish and be sustainable.
Among the qualities the judges will be looking for are a dedicated effort to drive the business forward, potential and vision.

This prestigious award is open to chefs of any level who are currently working within Norfolk and Suffolk's food and drink industry.
Readers, businesses and chefs can nominate, and chefs will then be contacted to submit a formal entry.
Competitors may come from all areas of the hospitality business, including hotels, restaurants, pubs, contract catering, fine dining, private and public sectors.
The judges will be looking for individuals that recognise the close link of fine food with using the best of local produce, demonstrating a talent for producing outstanding dishes with a personal flair.
For this category, the judges are looking for a coffee shop/café in Norfolk and Suffolk which is able to create an outstanding customer experience.
This should include a warm welcome, high-quality tea and/or coffee plus a range of other drinks, tasty food made from fresh, local produce, all served with an excellent level of customer service.
Judges will be impressed by a relaxed, comfortable ambience, originality, an imaginative menu and aspects which make the café or coffee shop special.

For the prestigious title of 2025's Restaurant of the Year, nominations will be accepted for restaurants across Norfolk and Suffolk that create an incomparable dining experience, from ambience to the service.
Perhaps most importantly, their menu will be varied, using fresh local produce and be served with an excellent level of customer service.
This category seeks to recognise an often overlooked yet extremely important sector of the hospitality industry – the front of house experience.
The judges will be looking for the level of front of house provision that makes a truly enjoyable visit to a restaurant, café or pub.
Entrants should show evidence of a warm welcome, understanding and anticipation of customers' needs and a good knowledge of menus, dishes and provenance, as well as a personable approach that complements the establishment and really enhances the visit.
The Farm Shop of the Year award judges will be looking for a standout Norfolk or Suffolk farm shop that offers an exceptional selection of locally-sourced, high-quality produce while creating a welcoming and engaging customer experience.
This category celebrates businesses that champion sustainability, support farmers, and bring fresh, seasonal ingredients to their community.

Eligible farm shops should be based in Norfolk or Suffolk, providing a diverse range of products – from fresh fruit and vegetables to artisanal cheeses, baked goods, meats, and homemade specialties.
This award will honour food and drink businesses in Norfolk and Suffolk that deliver a truly unique and exceptional experience where creativity, craftsmanship and personalisation set them apart.
The category celebrates a wide range of exceptional food ventures, including occasion bakers, cake designers, grazing board specialists and bespoke catering services.
From handcrafted celebration cakes to beautifully curated grazing experiences and tailored menus that reflect specific dietary needs or cultural influences, these businesses offer more than just food – they create moments of delight and personal connection.

Meet the couple reopening riverside pub after five-year closure
A businessman with 20 years of hospitality experience is taking the plunge to revive a beloved riverside pub. Sean Butler-Whyman is joining forces with his husband James to "transform a village pub that was spitting sawdust and bring it back to life". The 33-year-old has owned and managed The Old White Bell in Southerly for the past 12 years, making the Jenyns Arms his second venture. Mr Butler-Whyman formed his love for west Norfolk after moving to the county from Essex when he was 12. "When we were getting ready to move, we would come here and reflect on the houses we had viewed and as I got older we would return to catch up with family - it acted as a hub for us all. The pub in the early 2000s (Image: Newsquest) "When I saw it had closed, I kept contacting the board for three years, finally placed an offer and got accepted." Locals hold a variety of memories for the venue - from nights partying in the 1970s and 1980s to watching the boats along the river. "It doesn't look like the Arms that people remember," Sean said. "We walked into a shell that didn't even have plaster on the bar walls." "We are working seven days a week, splitting our time between The Old White Bell and renovating the rooms here," Mr Butler-Whyman added. "It is daunting as I am really keen to open on October 6 but I am excited to create new memories."

Traders 'concerned' by major seafront repairs
Traders in a seaside resort said they feared tourists could be put off by major repairs planned for its promenade. Officials have said "multiple millions" will be needed to repair the prom and sea defences at Hunstanton, Norfolk, with work expected to take more than two years. "There's no question that closing sections of the promenade will stop people coming here – it's very concerning," said kiosk-owner Glenn Dickerson. King's Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council said it "understood" the concerns and it would be talking to businesses as its plans developed. Last week, the authority said coastal erosion had led to the beach dropping, meaning parts of the sea wall's foundations had become exposed and damaged. It also revealed that more than 300 of the large concrete slabs on the promenade could need replacing. Whilst it said the prom remained safe for visitors, work would need to take place as "collapse" was a possibility in the future. The news has caused concern for traders who operate on the front. Urte Shuardson – who runs three stalls with her husband – said the prom "definitely needs work". But she said details from the council had been limited and added: "We've just been handed a letter which didn't say much about what will be happening to us, which is a little bit scary." "Clearly it needs to be done," said Glenn Dickerson, whose business sells hot food. However, he also felt there had been a lack of "transparency" about the plans and was worried work would take longer than the council had suggested. He added: "The whole town will be affected by it. It's a quaint Victorian seaside town, and the promenade is a major feature of it. "A period of consultation with traders [is needed] – not just on the promenade – but in the town itself so that we have a thorough understanding of what's going on." Businesses on the prom rely on trade during the warmer months, and stallholder Michael Parkin said he hoped work would take place in the winter. "You're not going to want to... [bring] your children when there's diggers and what have you," he said But Edward Scarrott, who sells doughnuts and ice cream, thought the proposals were "a brilliant idea" with the prom looking "tatty and dirty". "Obviously, it's doing the right thing for the town with the sea defences because they're sinking," he said. He was not worried by how long the work might take and added: "This is England. Councils take a long time to do everything, don't they?" The council - which is run by the Independent Partnership - said it will take up to 18 months to draw up plans for the work, and it will also need to seek government funding. "As we understand it, the prom will not be closed off completely at any point," said Sandra Squire, cabinet member for environment and coastal. "It will be done in sections. We will be able to move traders while that section is being done." The authority's environmental health manager, Dave Robson, said he recognised traders' concerns and "people may be put off coming to Hunstanton". Plans lodged for battery farm on city outskirts
New plans have emerged for a battery farm despite concerns about fire risks. Norfolk County Council has written to energy secretary Ed Miliband asking for training and equipment for fire services to be funded in areas where large battery farms are planned. Strong objections were received to a battery energy storage system (Bess) in the south of the county, near Diss, leading to plans being withdrawn. However, a new application has been lodged for a Bess to be built on 18 acres (seven hectares) of farmland, the equivalent of about 12 football pitches, on the southern outskirts of Norwich. Greenfield Energy Developments has lodged the plans with South Norfolk Council for the site close to the A47, between the village of Keswick and the Harford Park and Ride. The Bess, on land east of Mulbarton Road, would hold up to 400MW of electricity in 166 containers. Norfolk could become the biggest solar energy producer in the country if a handful of major schemes go ahead and it is expected that new battery storage sites will be required to support these. However, Bess proposals have also promted worries about potential fire risks because of the lithium within the batteries, which can cause an explosion when overheated. County councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of writing to Mr Miliband about the fire safety concerns, although the Green group warned about "scaremongering". A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokeswoman told the BBC: "Battery fires at storage sites are rare in the UK and we already have high safety standards in place to ensure batteries are safe throughout their lifespan." The Keswick plans would include a cooling and fire protection system and a fire suppression system. The plans state that the energy storage units will be almost 2.9m (9.5ft) in height due to having noise reducing units on top of them. However, the scheme remains in the early stages and its developers are seeking guidance from South Norfolk Council about the potential environment impact. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has already responded to the plans advising that a series of conditions are put in place, including safe distances between units and the need for an access route for fire vehicles. The project has emerged after plans for a similar scheme in Rushall, near Diss, were withdrawn without explanation last month amid a host of objections. That project was for a site five times the size, about 92 acres (37.5 hectares), for 1,035 units which could store up to 900 megawatts of electricity.
