Teslas set on fire with Molotov cocktails and shot with gun in Las Vegas attack

Yahoo18-03-2025

A suspect armed with a gun and Molotov cocktails launched a "targeted attack" against a Tesla location in Las Vegas early Tuesday, spray painting "resist," firing several shots and torching multiple cars, authorities said.
Gunshots and flames erupted at the Tesla Collision Center, at 6260 Badura Ave., at 2:45 a.m. in the latest violent incident involving property associated with Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO and adviser to President Donald Trump.
"This was a targeted attack against a Tesla facility, " LVMPD Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren told reporters. "We do believe that it is isolated at this time. We do not believe there is further threat to the general public."
The suspect wore all black, and "used what appeared to be a Molotov cocktails and a firearm to conduct his attack," Korean said.
"At least five Tesla vehicles were damaged to include two of which were engulfed in flames," Koren continued.
The attacker "fired three rounds into different Tesla vehicles" and at least one un-ignited Molotov cocktail was recovered from the scene, the assistant sheriff said.
The word "RESIST" in all-caps was stray pained in red on the center's doors.
Musk has been the point man for the Trump administration's attempts to drastically reduce federal programs with his Department of Government Efficiency.
Those efforts have coincided with a wave of vandalism nationally that appear to be targeting Tesla vehicles and facilities.
"This level of violence is insane and deeply wrong," Musk said in a statement posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter that he bought in 2022. "Tesla just makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these evil attacks."
There will be more police assigned to Tesla locations around Las Vegas, Koren said.
'Violent acts like this are unacceptable,' said FBI Special Agent Spencer Evans, chief of the bureau's Las Vegas office.
'To those who might think that something like this is justifiable or potentially even admirable, we want to let you know it's a federal crime. We will come after you. We will find you.'
About 22 hours before this Las Vegas incident and 300 miles away near San Diego, sheriff's deputies on patrol there drove by a Tesla dealership when "multiple cars were found with swastikas spray-painted on them," officials said.
"In addition, several windows of the dealership building had also been spray-painted with swastikas and profanity," the San Diego County Sheriff's Office said.
And in another overnight incident of suspected arson, police say two CyberTrucks were damaged by fire at a Tesla dealership in Kansas City, Missouri.
The FBI said it's working with the ATF and the Kansas City police to investigate the incident.
'Similar incidents have occurred in several states and the FBI and ATF are coordinating with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to gather information,' FBI Kansas City said in a Tuesday statement.

A bid for bail by former New Jersey US Sen. Menendez is rejected by appeals court as prison looms

NEW YORK (AP) — A bid for bail by former U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez while he appeals his bribery conviction was rejected Wednesday by a federal appeals court, a week before the veteran New Jersey politician is scheduled to report to prison. Menendez, 71, was convicted last July of selling his clout for bribes. FBI agents who searched his home three years ago found $480,000, some of it stuffed inside boots and jacket pockets, gold bars worth an estimated $150,000 and a luxury convertible in the garage. Prosecutors said that in exchange, Menendez performed corrupt favors for the New Jersey business owners. They said he tried to protect the men and associates from criminal investigations, helped two in business deals with foreign powers and met with Egyptian intelligence officials before helping that country access $300 million in U.S. military aid. Menendez, a Democrat, has insisted that he is innocent and is seeking to overturn his conviction. He is scheduled to surrender to federal prison authorities on Tuesday. A three-judge panel on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied his bail motion in a brief order issued Wednesday. The decision did not include a rationale, but it said one of the three judges would have granted the motion. An email seeking comment was sent to his attorneys. Menendez, who once served as chair of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, resigned his seat a month after his conviction. He had been in the Senate since 2006. Two business owners also were convicted last year along with Menendez. His wife, Nadine Menendez, was convicted in April of teaming up with her husband to accept bribes from the business owners. Her trial was delayed after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and required surgery. Her sentencing has been set for Sept. 11.

Seminole County man arrested for threatening ex-girlfriend with explosive device

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office arrested a Seminole County man on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, for planning to blow up his ex-girlfriend's car. On April 18, 2025, the SCSO Hazardous Devices Team responded to 1268 Wellington Terrace in Maitland about a suspicious item inside the residence. Detectives on the scene served the homeowner, 22-year-old Ian Rogers, with a Temporary Risk Protection Order and searched the residence. SCSO located the suspicious device, which was described as a black plastic container with orange wires wrapped around it and tape around the lid. During the investigation, deputies discovered Rogers had threatened to blow up his ex-girlfriend's car on FaceTime. Investigators met with the ex-girlfriend and were informed that she and Rogers dated for approximately a month. During the relationship, she realized he was becoming verbally and mentally abusive towards her, and she ended the relationship. Due to her ending the relationship, Rogers began harassing her and threatening to kill himself. Due to threatening his own life, she agreed to FaceTime Rogers. During the FaceTime, Rogers brandished an unknown container with a wire wrapped around it and threatened to blow up her car. On April 25, 2025, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Special Agent Bomb Technician started a month-long lab analysis of the suspicious device. Based on the ATF lab analysis, it was determined that Rogers made an explosive device capable of causing property damage, injury, and or death to persons nearby. Rogers was placed under arrest and booked into the Seminole County Jail. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. And click here to stream Channel 9 Eyewitness News live.
