Make-A-Wish brings cheer to cancer-hit children in Yemen
Make-A-Wish Foundation announced the resumption of its humanitarian efforts in Yemen by fulfilling the wishes of five children with cancer at Al Sadaqa Educational Hospital in Aden.
This initiative reflects the organisation's unwavering commitment to its noble mission, despite ongoing challenges.
The fulfilled wishes included gifting the children the latest electronic devices they had long dreamed of, such as smartphones, iPads, and a smart TV, which brought moments of joy and alleviated the children's suffering from their illness.
Hani Al Zubaidi, CEO of 'Make-A-Wish' Foundation, expressed his profound happiness at returning to Yemen to fulfil these wishes.
He stated, 'With every wish we achieve, we plant a new seed of hope in the hearts of children and their families. Over the past years, we have fulfilled 605 wishes in Yemen. Our return to fulfil more wishes is a testament to our firm belief that hope is not just a feeling but a healing force that revitalises spirits and illuminates the path to recovery, even in the darkest moments."
Al Zubaidi added, 'In 2025, we renew our commitment to strengthening these noble humanitarian values and transforming community support into tangible realities which touch lives.'
He concluded, 'We are proud to be the reason behind these smiles."

Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences has announced the completion of the screening process for the 2025 Medical Awards, which aim to recognize outstanding achievements in healthcare at both the local and regional levels. According to the awards committee, this year's cycle received a total of 330 submissions from 18 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, Oman, Iraq, India, Kuwait, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Jordan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, the United States, Pakistan, Tunisia, Syria, and Ghana. Following an initial review, 261 submissions advanced to the administrative and technical screening stage, which involved verifying compliance with the award's eligibility criteria and guidelines. Of those, 161 applications were confirmed as eligible and are now set to proceed to the judging phase, scheduled to begin on 2 June and continue until 15 October. The judging process will be carried out by specialized committees comprising distinguished experts in the field. Each submission will be assessed according to the specific evaluation criteria established for each award category. She added that these efforts reflect the merit and credibility of the Medical Excellence Awards, which seek to spotlight innovations and achievements that contribute to the advancement of medical practices. The awards also aim to encourage and support researchers in producing impactful and innovative studies in medicine and healthcare. The Foundation is committed to sharing the benefits of award-winning work, offering it as a source of inspiration and a model for excellence in scientific and medical fields. These achievements also contribute to the development of new solutions to address growing challenges in the healthcare sector. The Medical Excellence Awards consist of two main categories. The first is dedicated to supporting health and research achievements across the Arab world and includes the Arab Award for Health Sector Research and the Arab Award for Genetic Sciences. The second category focuses on recognizing exceptional contributions within the United Arab Emirates and includes the Best Research in Healthcare Award, the Innovation in Healthcare Award, and the Hamdan Award for Distinguished Personalities. Over previous cycles, the awards have garnered wide recognition and attracted high-quality submissions from both inside and outside the UAE. UAE Launches Initiative with WHO to Combat Malnutrition in Socotra Island
The United Arab Emirates, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), has launched a humanitarian initiative to combat rising malnutrition rates among women and children on Yemen's Socotra Island. The effort, led by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works, targets one of the region's most pressing health challenges. Recent data shows the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate among children under five on the island has reached 10.9%, with the Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) rate at 1.6%—figures that cross internationally recognised critical thresholds. Mohamed Haji Al Khouri, Director-General of the Foundation, said the initiative reflects the UAE's enduring commitment to humanitarian support and global health development. He emphasised the project's roots in the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the current leadership of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The Foundation, an affiliate of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, will work closely with WHO to develop evidence-based solutions to tackle nutrition-related health issues. The two-year plan includes reducing maternal and child mortality, enhancing emergency preparedness, and strengthening local healthcare systems. Dr. Ferima Coulibaly-Zerbo, Acting WHO Representative in Yemen, highlighted the importance of the partnership in addressing urgent needs and building long-term health resilience in the region.
