Springboks' Ox Nche: Wallabies present a tough challenge
Despite being favourites, Springboks prop Ox Nche warns of a tough challenge from the rising Wallabies in their Rugby Championship opener at Ellis Park on Saturday. Picture: Michael Sherman/IOL Australia, though, seem to be on the up as their recent series against the British and Irish Lions seems to indicate. Though Australia lost the series 2-1, they did win their final encounter in Sydney on August 2. In fact, the last time the Wallabies beat the Boks came in 2022 in Adelaide. Since then, the Springboks have run out comprehensive victors. The last time Australia beat South Africa at the famed venue in the heart of Johannesburg came 62 years ago. Despite the Springboks being overwhelming favourites for their Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday, South Africa prop Ox Nche says their opposition will be no pushover. Nche Highlights Australia's Rising Form Ahead of Test Match Against South Africa 'We saw the last two British and Irish Lions Tests, how well they started to gel together,' said Nche. 'I think they will definitely be looking forward to this Test and I think they will be up for it. I think they will start to focus on getting all those pieces and gel together.' While South Africa top the current World Rugby rankings to go with their 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup titles, Australia are down in sixth. Still, Nche insisted their foes were back on the rise. 'They have improved a lot because there are a lot of new good combinations and a lot of players that have also played together for a while. I think they are going to be a good challenge. 'I definitely think their setpiece has improved a lot. We saw two British and Irish Tests, they have good combinations as I said. 'You have a guy like Will Skelton and Taniela Tupou and Angus Bell, you saw how big they were for them and as well. They have a very solid pack, even the guys coming off the bench. Come lineout time as well, they're gelling. They compete very well, they win most of their balls. I think they've actually gotten the right combinations together.' The match kicks off at 5.10pm. @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

Rassie full of praise for Joe Schmidt, talks up Wallabies' chances in Rugby Championship
'Everyone is talking about the belief he brought back. The fight for the jersey is back. We have a lot of respect for that and also the squad he is building.' Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said the Wallabies will be out to honour their coach, Joe Schmidt, with an emphatic display in the Rugby Championship, adding that it is in their hands to win it all. Erasmus expressed his own admiration for the outgoing coach, having worked with Schmidt during his time in Ireland. Rassie: Wallabies are clicking The Wallabies take on the Springboks in their first two Rugby Championship matches, first in Johannesburg this Saturday and then in Cape Town the following weekend. Australia have not won at Ellis Park since 2009 but they are coming from an encouraging performance in their home series against the British & Irish Lions. They lost the series 2–1 but only due to a controversial refereeing decision in the dying minutes of the second game. The Wallabies won the final match emphatically, 22–12, and have spoken about carrying that momentum into the Rugby Championship. Erasmus, who in a friendly wager with his fellow coaches thought the Wallabies would win the second Lions Test, was again full of praise for their resurgence in world rugby, after they came last in the last two Rugby Championships and failed to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 2023. 'We are under no illusions that the moment you start clicking, start understanding each other and the real belief is there – it is not plastic belief – people don't just talk it up but they play it up,' Erasmus said, after naming his squad for the first match. 'I think they are currently playing it up on the field. So I think this Rugby Championship is very open to all four teams.' Still, the Springbok coach said it was hard to know the level an opposition team was at physically and mentally until they actually played them. Springbok coach lauds work done by Schmidt Erasmus applauded the work done by Schmidt, who will be replaced by Les Kiss next season. He said that while coaching Munster from 2017 to 2019, he actually reported to Joe Schmidt, who was coaching Ireland at the time, because of the organisational structure in Irish rugby. 'Joe is a great coach. He is a very particular guy, a very detail-driven guy. He certainly knows what he wants.' Erasmus said Schmidt would like to finish on a high, and the Wallabies have respect for him. 'Everyone is talking about the belief he brought back. The fight for the jersey is back. We have a lot of respect for that and also the squad he is building.'

Wallabies' Max Jorgensen pumped to face ‘bloody good' Springboks
The 20-year-old utility back Max Jorgensen made his Test debut against South Africa in Perth during last year's Rugby Championship. Now, coach Joe Schmidt is set to unleash his raw pace and composure in back-to-back clashes against the world champions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. 'All the boys are pretty pumped after our last win against the [British & Irish] Lions, we've built a bit of confidence there,' Jorgensen said ahead of the team's departure for South Africa. ALSO: Boks brace for 'psyched-up' Wallabies 'But South Africa are a bloody good team so we've got to really take it to them, bring the physicality and hopefully come out with a win.' Jorgensen warned against reading too much into that morale-boosting victory over the Lions. 'We've got to stick to the process. We've got to keep building the days. We're still building, we're still a work in progress – we're not perfect. We've got to take the learnings from our last game and keep building into that, building into South Africa and all through the Rugby Championship.' For Jorgensen, the Boks represent the ultimate test. 'It's who you want to play against,' he said. 'You don't want to play against the lower tier nations. You really want to play against those high tier nations with strong players, strong teams because it really challenges you as a team and as a player personally.'
