Vietnam to ban petrol and diesel motorcycles from Hanoi to tackle rising air pollution

Independent2 days ago
Vietnam will ban fossil-fuel motorcycles and mopeds from central Hanoi from next year in an attempt to curb worsening air pollution.
From 1 July 2026, motorbikes running on petrol and diesel will not be allowed inside and along Hanoi's main ring road, which surrounds the city's business and government districts.
The directive was issued by prime minister Pham Minh Chinh.
City authorities have been told to prepare for the transition and ensure compliance by the deadline.
The majority of Hanoi's nearly eight million people rely on two-wheelers for daily transport.
The city has some seven million motorcycles and just over a million cars. As incomes rise and more people switch to private vehicles, the air quality is deteriorating. Hanoi regularly ranks among the world's most polluted cities. AQI levels in parts of the city in July range from 115 to 165 – categorised as 'poor' to 'very poor'.
The WHO estimates that over 60,000 deaths per year in Vietnam are linked to air pollution.
The government plans to encourage a shift to electric vehicles, led by domestic automaker VinFast, which controls some 20 per cent of Vietnam's EV market share. However, adoption of electric two-wheelers remains limited.
While air pollution remains a concern, many people are worried about the plan and its timeline. 'It'll affect people who rely on motorbikes to earn a living. How can people just discard their vehicles?' Nguyen Van Hung, 62, a Hanoi motorcycle taxi driver who works with ride-hailing service Grab, told the Associated Press.
Some residents say they support cleaner air but question whether the city is ready.
'We need better public transport and more support before such a big change,' Hoang Duy Dung, 32, who works in a central Hanoi office, said.
The Vietnamese city's move came barely days after a plan to stop old vehicles from getting fuel in Delhi, India, sparked backlash, prompting its rollback by the local government.
Hanoi's next phase of restrictions, due in January 2028, will impose the ban to a wider area and limit petrol-fuelled private cars.
In addition to vehicle restrictions, the Vietnamese government said it would upgrade waste treatment infrastructure, implement digital monitoring systems and introduce stricter environmental penalties. Rewards will also be offered to whistleblowers who report pollution breaches.
Hanoi is the first major city in Vietnam to set a date for a motorcycle ban. Similar discussions are underway in Ho Chi Minh City, where traffic congestion and smog are growing concerns.
Like Hanoi, several major cities around the world are taking steps to restrict private vehicles from their roads. In Amsterdam, petrol and diesel cars, bikes and mopeds will be banned from 2030.
Across Europe, over 340 municipalities, including Paris and Milan, have introduced low‑emission zones or traffic restrictions to reclaim public space and improve health.

Gold eases on firmer dollar, solid US data

July 17 (Reuters) - Gold prices edged lower on Thursday, weighed down by a stronger dollar and robust U.S. economic data, while caution persisted as markets awaited clarity on tariff developments. Spot gold fell 0.2% to $3,338.78 per ounce, by 1231 p.m. EDT (1631 GMT) after hitting a session low of $3,309.59. U.S. gold futures fell 0.4% to $3,344.20. Following the latest U.S. data, "there was a bit of rise in the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields are higher. So, it's put a little weakness in the gold market," said Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at RJO Futures. The dollar gained 0.2%, making the greenback-priced gold more expensive for foreign currency holders. U.S. jobless claims fell last week, pointing to steady job growth in July, while retail sales data beat expectations, adding 0.6% last month, though some of the gain likely reflected tariff-driven price increases. Fed Governor Adriana Kugler said the Fed should not cut interest rates "for some time" as the impact of Trump administration tariffs begins to pass through to prices. Gold is often regarded as a hedge against uncertainty and inflation, but higher interest rates diminish its appeal, as it yields no interest. On the trade front, Japan's top trade negotiator held talks with the U.S. Commerce Secretary on U.S. tariffs, as Tokyo races to avert a 25% levy that will be imposed unless a deal is clinched by an August 1 deadline. "If Trump follows through on his threats and trade tensions escalate, it's not a stretch to imagine gold challenging — and potentially breaking-its record highs again," said Fawad Razaq, market analyst at City Index and Palladium rose 2.8% to $1,265.76, reaching its highest level since September 2023. Fears of an escalating war in Russia, a major palladium exporter, are fuelling supply concerns and driving prices higher, Haberkorn said. Elsewhere, spot silver added 0.2% to $38.01 per ounce, while platinum lost 1% to $1,432.50.

Uber to buy 20,000 self-driving taxis

Uber is to start rolling out self-driving taxis next year after striking a deal to take a $300m (£224m) stake in a US electric vehicle maker. The ride-sharing giant has agreed to buy 20,000 vehicles from Lucid Group to operate as a fleet of robotaxis. The Lucid Gravity SUVs, which use technology from robotics company Nuro, will be deployed over a six-year period, starting in a major US city next year. As part of the deal, Uber will take a $300m stake in Lucid, becoming the California-based company's second-largest investor behind Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. Uber will also make an investment in robotics company Nuro worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Dara Khosrowshahi, chief executive of Uber, said: 'Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better. 'We're thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi programme, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world.' It is the latest in a string of partnerships that Uber has struck with tech companies and car manufacturers, including Waymo and Volkswagen, as it looks to stake a claim in the nascent market. The company, which already operates self-driving taxis in some US cities, this week struck a deal with China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis in Asia and the Middle East. It signals Uber's preference for partnering with and investing in third-party autonomous vehicle firms rather than attempting to develop the technology in-house – the strategy favoured by previous boss Travis Kalanick. Rivals and safety concerns However, the ride-hailing firm is facing intense competition from deep-pocketed rivals, including Google owner Alphabet and Amazon. Tesla last month also began rolling out its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, with Elon Musk vowing to expand into other cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. Self-driving cars have also come under close scrutiny over safety concerns and have been the target of political protests. Several Waymo robotaxis were set ablaze during protests against Donald Trump's immigration crackdown in LA last month. US regulators are also investigating Tesla's full self-driving software following a string of accidents, including one that killed a pedestrian. Uber has said it is ready to roll out autonomous taxis in the UK but is waiting for legal clearance. While the previous government said self-driving cars would be on Britain's roads by next year, Labour has now said it is more likely to happen in the second half of 2027. Uber's investment will come as a boost to Lucid, whose co-founder Peter Rawlinson stepped down last year amid heavy losses. He was replaced by Marc Winterhoff, who has pledged to double production this year after the company rolled out its $95,000 (£70,000) Gravity SUV model.

This funky electric Ford Bronco is exactly the sort of car we want in the UK

You're looking at an all-electric version of the funky Ford Bronco off-roader. But it's not, if you're wondering, designed for Mulholland drive or the Moab, but megacities like Shanghai. That's because this new model has been designed specifically for the Chinese market, yet we think it should really be coming here too. Advertisement - Article continues below Officially called the 'Ford Bronco New Energy', this large SUV has been built as part of Ford's joint venture with the Chinese-owned Jiangling Motors group. As such, it doesn't feature a thirsty four-cylinder or V6 petrol engine as it does in the US, but an all-electric powertrain with the option of a range-extender hybrid too. So while it's all-but impossible to legislate the American Ford Bronco in the UK and Europe thanks to our strict emissions regulations, this model seems to solve the problem by going straight in for a much cleaner electric powertrain. In terms of size, the Bronco New Energy is just over five metres long and a touch under two metres wide, making it around 250mm longer than a Land Rover Defender, but marginally narrower. Also like a Defender, the electric Bronco features a car-like unibody construction, rather than the American Bronco's ladder frame. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The floor houses a big 105kWh battery pack that gives it up to 404 miles of range on the Chinese CLTC cycle, which prioritises lower speeds and urban environments. This strong range figure is likely boosted by the fact it's not four-wheel drive, instead featuring a single motor with 271bhp. There's also a 241bhp plug-in range extender variant, which downsizes the battery size to around 43kWh and packs in a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that can recharge the battery on the go. Ford quotes an all-electric range figure of 143 miles for this one, after which the petrol engine will kick in. Aside from this, we have few technical details, but can see from the images that the new car looks just as rugged as the traditional Bronco, thanks to its upright body, retro detailing and chunky wheel arches. No images of the interior have been revealed, but we suspect it to be focused towards Chinese consumers who are more digitally connected and technically savvy than the median European buyer. So in other words, expect plenty of screen real estate. This isn't the only good looking Ford SUV built solely for the Chinese market, either, with the Territory SUV also built as part of the aforementioned joint venture. Neither model is expected to come to Europe in the near future, which we reckon is a bit of a shame.
