Woman found naked, bound and hanging from boyfriend's paradise balcony

On the morning of 13 July 2011, Rebecca Zahau, a 32 year old mum, was found hanging naked from the second-floor balcony of her boyfriend's mansion in Coronado, California.
Rebecca, a certified ophthalmic technician who was dating pharmaceutical tycoon Jonah Shacknai, was discovered gagged, with her hands and feet bound. The grim discovery was made by Shacknai's brother Adam, who cut her down and rang emergency services.
Investigators soon revealed that Rebecca had received a voicemail just hours before her death, informing her about the critical condition of Shacknai's six year old son Max. The boy had suffered a fall down a staircase at his father's 27-bedroom historic mansion, with Rebecca being the only adult present during the incident.
Max's prognosis was bleak, and he tragically passed away due to his injuries on 17 July. Rebecca's death sent shockwaves through the tranquil, affluent island community of Coronado, located across the San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego, sparking its most high-profile and mysterious police investigation.
The case has since inspired a book and an Oxygen TV special, drawing the attention of numerous internet detectives. Rebecca and Shacknai started dating shortly after his divorce from his second wife, Max's mother, reports the Mirror US.
As their relationship deepened, Rebecca left her job at Horizon Eye Specialists and Lasik Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, to devote more time to Shacknai and his children, claims her former employer.
In 2007, Shacknai took up residence in the lavish Spreckels Mansion, a grand Italian Renaissance and Beaux-Arts-styled property built in 1908 for an heir to the Spreckels sugar fortune, mainly using it as a summer getaway.
The enigma wrapped around Rebecca's demise initially left local police baffled. They initially suspected murder until they discoveredscrawl in black paint on a guest bedroom door that read, "she saved him can he save her."
Nonetheless, following a thorough investigation, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department asserted that she'd ended her own life, hinting she might have felt responsible for Max's accident. To buttress their case, the officers showcased a video demonstration for journalists, showing their theory on how Rebecca could've tied herself up before hanging.
Police also cited her fingerprints on a blade used to slice the rope and her toe prints on the balcony decking as evidence she mounted herself from that location.
However, spurning the constabulary's version of events, Rebecca's mother and sister fiercely contested the findings, launching off a wrongful death legal claim, contending that Shacknai's brother Adam, who was staying at the mansion, was responsible.
In a surprising development in 2018, a civil jury in San Diego ruled in favour of the family, granting them $5 million in damages after determining Adam was responsible for her death, despite his claims of innocence, as per ABC News.
The Zahau family's attorney argued that Adam had sexually assaulted Rebecca before murdering her and staging the scene to resemble a suicide, according to the Los Angeles Times. Dan Webb, Adam's lawyer, expressed his astonishment at the verdict, stating he was "absolutely astonished".
"It is clear the Zahau family desperately wanted to place blame after such an inexplicable tragedy," Webb said in a statement provided to PEOPLE. "But falsely accusing an innocent man of murder, without a shred of credible evidence, did nothing to advance the pursuit of justice, nor to honor the memory of Max and Rebecca. Instead, the fabricated allegations against Adam, and the emotional jury response they provoked, only add another appalling human tragedy to this already horrible situation."
Following the civil jury's verdict, the family's lawyer announced their intention to request that the sheriff's department reopen the investigation. The sheriff's department assigned new detectives to reassess the case, but these investigators reached the same conclusion as their predecessors.
"We conducted an objective and thorough investigation into Miss Zahau's death," the sheriff's department told PEOPLE. "The facts of that investigation have led to the conclusion that Miss Zahau took her own life."
In 2022, Zahau's family submitted a petition to the San Diego Department of the Medical Examiner, urging them to change the official classification of her death from suicide to homicide.
In a recent letter addressed to Rebecca's attorney, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Steven C. Campman communicated his office's unwavering stance on the case, which was disclosed in documents obtained by PEOPLE magazine.
Campman shared in his September 2023 correspondence that he had "considered the arguments set forth in your letter and the information in the accompanying documents."
He noted that his considerations included discussions with colleagues and the pathologist who determined the initial ruling.
Concluding his communication, Campman firmly stated: "However, after reviewing the totality of the evidence, the conclusion of this office has not changed," indicating that their original findings remain intact.

Wife's chilling four words after killing, castrating and cooking husband

A California model tied the knot with a man named Bill Nelson only three days after they first met, but Omaiama Nelson's account paints a dark picture of their union. The Egyptian-born model and nanny claimed her husband became violent just after they married, regularly subjecting her to physical and sexual abuse. Pushed to breaking point by her husband's abusive behaviour, Omaiama Nelson committed an act of horrifying violence. She mutilated Bill, killed him with a clothes iron, cooked his hands, and consumed one of his fingers, later expressing relief by saying "I'm glad I lived". Omaiama had settled in California from Egypt five years before the dreadful murder, working as a nanny and model. In 1991, she met 56 year old Bill, a pilot and much older than her, while playing pool at a bar. Their marriage quickly descended into violence, according to Omaiama, with her claims being supported by a psychological assessment that later diagnosed her with PTSD. On Thanksgiving Day in 1991, after another alleged sexual assault by Bill, Omaiama took a lethal stand, reports the Mirror US. Omaiama Nelson, a former Egyptian model, claimed that her husband sexually assaulted her during a bondage session. She told police she managed to break free from her restraints and attacked him with a lamp, stabbed him with scissors, and bludgeoned him to death with a clothes iron. He succumbed to his stab wounds. During the horrific attack, Omaiama was dressed in red, investigators revealed. However, this was just the start of the gruesome end for Bill. After killing Bill, Omaiama embarked on the horrifying task of dismembering her husband's body. It is believed she castrated him as an act of revenge for the alleged sexual assault. In a desperate bid to remove his fingerprints, the murderer boiled her husband's hands and cooked his head. She then mixed his body parts with leftover turkey from their Thanksgiving dinner and disposed of this mixture in the garbage disposal. The entire gruesome act took 12 hours, with Omaiama claiming she was in a 'trance-like state'. Just days prior to the murder, a home video showed the couple enjoying family time in the South of the US with relatives. This footage was presented to the jury before Omaima's parole was denied in 2011 by Orange County prosecutors. After the gruesome killing, Omaima Nelson was spotted driving her husband's red Corvette, which contained black rubbish bags on the front seat with human remains, as CBS2 reported. A video captured just after the police arrived at the scene shows an investigator shocked to discover organs in one of the bags. The trail of evidence led detectives to a blood-soaked flat where it's believed Omaima Nelson tied her husband to the bed and chopped him up. Two crucial pieces of evidence in the trial were a wooden knife and a cleaver. Neighbours reported hearing the waste disposal unit running non-stop for two days. More remains were discovered in a brown suitcase and the freezer. During her trial for the murder of her husband, Omaima Nelson told the court: "If I didn't defend my life, I would have been dead. I'm sorry it happened, but I'm glad I lived... I'm sorry I dismembered him." Omaima confessed to a psychiatrist that she seasoned his ribs with barbecue sauce and tasted them, although she has retracted these claims. Her attempts to persuade the jury that she was a victim of domestic abuse failed, despite a previous psychiatric evaluation and a complaint she made to a nurse in Orange County Jail. The note she wrote stated: "I am ready to lose it and go off on someone. Anyone. I can't sleep at night. I am extremely depressed."

Diver's horrifying death after ignoring warnings and filming final moments

A harrowing clip has captured a diver's final moments before his tragic death at a notorious diving spot after ignoring warnings about the perilous nature of his actions. On April 28, 2000, Russian-Israeli diver Yuri Lipski took the plunge into the infamous Blue Hole in the Red Sea off Egypt and tragically never emerged again. It is believed that Lipski succumbed to the effects of nitrogen narcosis nearly 300 feet below the surface, where the intense pressure likely caused him to experience euphoria, confusion, hallucinations, and poor decision-making. In a grim twist, Lipski's helmet camera was found intact, providing a haunting glimpse into his last moments, as reported by the Daily Star. The recovered footage eerily displays the ocean floor while the sound of Lipski's breathing resonates ominously. Lipski had hoped to film the renowned arch of the Blue Hole, according to Tarek Omar, a technical diver who had met Lipski in Egypt prior to his ill-fated dive, reports the Mirror US. Omar, known as 'The Elder Diver', had warned against the risky solo dive without proper training. "I said 'OK, so you'll need two weeks' training with me first, and then we'll film'," Omar recounted to The Guardian. However, constrained by time, Lipski turned down the offer for training and went ahead with the dive alone. His body was discovered the following morning. The Blue Hole, a submarine sinkhole that attracts divers from around the world, is infamous for its treacherous conditions, with some estimates suggesting that as many as 200 people may have lost their lives there. "Recovering bodies is a case-by-case thing; I do it pro bono," Omar told Scene Arabia. "It is a very critical and difficult thing to do – it requires more than just being a technical diver, it takes more than experience. It is very hard because you dive deep and you stay down to locate the remains." With around 200 fatalities recorded, The Blue Hole remains an infamous yet beguiling destination for scuba enthusiasts globally. This submarine sinkhole, which plummets to approximately 100 metres at its deepest point and features two oceanic connections, presents dual allure and peril—a stone's throw from the shoreline. For Omar, this renowned diving haven has become second nature. "I know it like my kitchen," he disclosed to Cairo Scene, reminiscing over his initial journey into what would become numerous retrieval voyages. A veteran of nearly two decades exploring the depths of the Blue Hole, he once surfaced from the abyss with a title in hand subsequent to an astonishing 209-metre dive.

World's worst serial killer has horrifying motive for killing 90 women

The world's most notorious serial killer has offered a bone-chilling explanation for slaughtering at least 90 women, admitting hacking his latest victim to death with an axe before setting her alight. Mikhail 'Werewolf' Popkov, charged with the savage slaying of Tatyana S, a cleaner, whose body he then torched in Angarsk in 2011, may have a death toll "closer to 200," police insiders claim. The 61 year old former police officer, who targeted females aged between 18 and 50, usually raped his victims prior to killing them with weapons such as axes, hammers, knives, screwdrivers, and spades. At a crime scene near a derelict water pumping station, a shackled Popkov confessed: "I committed the murder." His justification for these monstrous deeds was even more appalling. A law enforcement insider reckons his actual victim count is "closer to 200" as he annually confesses to more murders, aiming to better his jail conditions. Popkov, a married father, unleashed a wave of horror on lone women from 1992 to 2011, predominantly in Angarsk, Russia, reports the Mirror US. His ghastly reason? He sought to "cleanse of prostitutes". Recounting the lead-up to his latest confessed murder, he said: "I was on a bicycle, about to cross the park... I met this woman I didn't know, or she asked me something, and some conversation ensued." The row escalated and resulted in him hitting her with a small axe. When asked if he continued the assault after she fell, he responded: "No, I think I just pushed her over there and she fell over there. Then I stepped back, took out a match, threw a match, it went up in flames." He admitted soaking her in solvent before setting her alight. "And I just got on my bike and took off," Popkov confessed. "I put the axe right on the grass. Who will be looking for her at that time?" If his confession results in a conviction, it would verify at least 90 murders linked to him. Already serving two life sentences plus 10 years the man known as the "Angarsk Maniac" for his bloodcurdling series of killings, his latest victim's body was found in 2011, but wasn't initially connected to Popkov. It is thought to be his last confirmed killing. The Russian Investigative Committee said: "Popkov has admitted his guilt and testified to committing the crime, after which he was transferred [from his high security jail] to the Irkutsk region for the necessary investigative procedures. He has now been charged." Last year, Popkov owned up to three fresh murders in Russia's Primorsky region, a staggering 2,400 miles from Angarsk in Siberia where he carried out most of his horrific crimes. These additional killings took place when he journeyed to Vladivostok, the Russian Pacific port, to purchase second-hand Japanese motors which he then sold back in his home area after quitting the police force. Popkov was found to suffer from homicidal mania, described by TASS as "a condition when a person has an irrational desire to kill someone". Despite this, the serial killer was deemed sane. Despite its moratorium on capital punishment since 1996, Russia refrains from executing even the vilest offenders. In times past, those condemned to death faced execution by gunshot to the back of the head. A macabre clip from Popkov's personal collection depicts him in the nineties, advancing towards the lens with a blade in hand, reciting a post-war children's rhyme about Nazi POWs assaulting locals. "I will slash you. I will beat you. Now it's your turn," he utters with a sinister grin. He often lured his victims with offers of late-night lifts in his cop car, only to drive them to secluded spots where he would assault and murder them, dumping their bare bodies in forests or by roadsides. Popkov once confessed to a judge that he couldn't remember the exact tally of his victims. "I can't say exactly, I didn't keep a record," he stated. However, the mass murderer conceded in court: "I admit my guilt in full.... Committing the murders, I was guided by my inner convictions." Following his arrest in 2012, he informed police that his aim was to "cleanse" the streets of "prostitutes". "They abandoned their husbands and children at home and went out to party as if it was the last day on earth," he expressed. One theory is that an affair his wife Elena had with a coworker may have sparked Popkov's killing spree. Alexey Mulyavin, 52, admitted to having an affair with Elena before her husband embarked on his horrific spree. "He did not catch us red handed, but he learned about it," the man said. "You know, it was a very short affair. We were young. And probably everyone has love affairs at work." Popkov had previously recounted how he found used condoms at his home and suspected Elena of being unfaithful. She refuted the accusations, asserting she allowed friends to use their house for a rendezvous. Popkov said: "This was the impetus for my future. If I had seen the treason with my own eyes, I would perhaps have done everything differently. "Everyone goes through such things differently. Some take it easily and forget, others take it painfully. What happened to me? The worst-case scenario." In 2023, Popkov was sentenced for three previously undisclosed murders in Irkutsk between 1997 and 2003. Two women, aged 25 and 27, were strangled near the Angara River, one of whom was set alight after being soaked in petrol. The third victim was a 31 year old nursery school teacher and mother of two. Despite Popkov's proposition to join Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine in return for his liberty, his request has been rejected.
