New velodrome worth Rs 35 crore to come up at Balewadi sports complex in Pune ahead of Grand Challenge Tour cycling
'There was a meeting called to discuss the upcoming Pune Grand Challenge Tour 2026. I proposed developing a velodrome at the state government-owned sports complex in Balewadi. It was immediately given a go-ahead by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar along with assurance of funding of Rs 35 crore for the project,' said Sports Commissioner Sheetal Teli-Ugale Monday.
'I informed the deputy chief minister that the state of the existing velodrome is so bad that the youths practising at the facility get injured after falling. The existing velodrome should be demolished and a new world-class facility should be constructed as a remembrance of starting the international cycle event in the Pune district,' she said.
The new velodrome will be a symbol of the international event in Pune and will also nurture prospective cyclists for international competitions, said Teli-Ugale, adding that all damaged structures will be demolished and replaced to meet world-class standards. However, buildings and other materials that can be reused will not be reconstructed, she said.
The sports directorate will work to construct a velodrome before the international cycle race competition, Ugale-Teli said. 'We are not sure whether work will be completed before the international event, as the state government has to complete the technical process of issuing a government resolution for allocating funds for the project. It is only after that that the tender process will be started, and thereafter actual work will start.'
She said the planning for organising the international sports event has just begun, with responsibilities distributed to various government organisations. 'There will be frequent meetings for this purpose. The route for the cycle race will also be finalised by the concerned sports authority and informed to us. This race will pass through all terrains.'
The Pune Grand Challenge Tour 2026 will be a pioneering event in India, modelled after esteemed global races like the Tour de France. This multi-stage race will cover over 600 kilometres, traversing urban, rural, and hilly terrains across various locations, including Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati, Mulshi, Maval, Purandar, Bhor, and Velhe, among others.

Erigaisi, Gujrathi to headline Chennai Masters
Chennai: Grandmasters Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi and Anish Giri will headline the third edition of Chennai Grand Masters, starting here on August 6. India's most prestigious classical chess tournament will feature 20 players from across the Masters and Challengers categories. The latest edition will have a Rs one crore prize pool as competitors chase FIDE Circuit points, which are vital for qualifying for next year's Candidates Tournament. Organised by MGD1 and sponsored by Quantbox, the tournament will be split into two categories: Masters and Challengers. Besides Erigaisi, Gujrathi and Giri, the Masters field will comprise Jorden Van Foreest, Liang Awonder, Vincent Keymer, Ray Robson, Vladimir Fedoseev, and Pranav V, who steps up after winning the Challengers in 2024. 'Playing such a high-stakes tournament at home is always special. As the top-rated player here, I know the expectations are high, but the field this year is extremely competitive, and every game will demand my absolute best,' Erigaisi said. Aronian wins the title Meanwhile, Levon Aronian went on to win the event, beating American GM Hans Niemann 1.5-0.5 in the final to claim the $200,000 prize (Rs 1.7 crore). Aronian held firm in a tough first game before putting on a brilliant performance in the second to seal the victory. Carlsen praised Aronian for his resilience and said he was the 'deserved winner.' It is also important to note that Carlsen and Niemann have a tense history. Their relationship soured after Carlsen accused Niemann of cheating back in 2022, which created a huge controversy in the chess world. Niemann later filed a lawsuit against Carlsen, seeking damages for defamation. Although the legal dispute was eventually settled, the rivalry between the two has remained tense. 'It was incredibly impressive, very well deserved as well. He faced a lot of adversity for sure, especially the second game against Hikaru, it took a lot of mental resilience to be able to continue to press after he had several little chances to win, but he didn't take them.
