Oman hosts virtual preparatory meeting for 7th Session of UN Environment Assembly
The meeting was attended by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and Head of the session.
The meeting discussed the latest developments regarding the draft ministerial declaration for UNEA-7, which aims to advance sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
Participants also reviewed a draft guide for the mechanism of submitting proposed resolutions by member states, presented by the UNEA-7 Secretariat, along with guidelines for draft resolutions.
The meeting examined a concept note on organizing a dedicated day for multilateral environmental agreements to enhance their role and improve coordination among relevant stakeholders.
Additionally, the session addressed organizational arrangements and proposed topics for leadership and stakeholder dialogues during the assembly, aimed at fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange.
The draft communication strategy for the session was also reviewed, which seeks to highlight the assembly's themes and raise awareness of environmental issues.
On the sidelines of the meeting, a virtual dialogue session was held with representatives of major groups and stakeholders to gather their input on ongoing preparations, ensuring inclusive and representative decisions that reflect civil society perspectives.
This meeting marks a significant step toward strengthening international cooperation to address environmental challenges and ensuring the success of UNEA-7.
The session was attended by several ministers, ambassadors, members of the assembly's Bureau, the Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the UN Environment Programme, and Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the Programme.

US unveils first Iran oil sanctions after 12-day war truce
Washington: The United States has issued a new wave of sanctions against Iranian oil exports, the first penalties against Tehran's energy sector since a Washington-backed ceasefire between Israel and Iran came into effect last month, Al Jazeera reported. Among those targeted by the sanctions announced on Thursday are Iraqi businessman Salim Ahmed Said and his United Arab Emirates-based company, which the US accused of smuggling Iranian oil by blending it with Iraqi oil. "Iran's behavior has left it decimated. While it has had every opportunity to choose peace, its leaders have chosen extremism," US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. "Treasury will continue to target Tehran's revenue sources and intensify economic pressure to disrupt the regime's access to the financial resources that fuel its destabilizing activities." After the ceasefire was reached on June 24, US President Donald Trump said China could buy Iranian oil, suggesting the US might lift its sanctions on Tehran's energy exports. But the promise was short-lived. Trump wrote in a social media post last week that he "immediately dropped all work on sanction relief" in response to statements by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claiming victory over Israel. The US president also said he stopped Israel from assassinating Khamenei, saving him from a "VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH". Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had said Israel sought to kill Khamenei but there was "no operational opportunity" for the assassination. Israel launched air strikes against Iran without direct provocation on June 13, killing hundreds of Iranians, including civilians and top military officials. The US joined the Israeli campaign and attacked three Iranian nuclear sites. Iran responded with missile strikes against Israel and an attack on an airbase housing US soldiers in Qatar. Trump claimed the US air raids "obliterated" Iran's nuclear facilities. On Wednesday, the Pentagon said the US bombing operation set back Iran's nuclear programme by one to two years. But it is not clear where Iran's stockpiles of highly enriched uranium are. The country passed a law last month to suspend cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), over the agency's failure to condemn the US and Israeli attacks. The move has sparked rebukes by the US and several European countries. On Thursday, Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei suggested Iran is in indirect contact with the US - through Oman and Qatar - to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis, Al Jazeera reported. "Diplomacy must not be abused or used as a tool for deception or for simply a sort of psychological warfare against their adversaries," Baghaei told Sky News. He added that Tehran feels its diplomatic efforts have been "betrayed". Hours before Israel started the war last month, Trump reiterated a US commitment to diplomacy. And days before the US attacks, he said he would make a decision on joining the war within two weeks to allow talks between Iran and European powers, Al Jazeera reported.

"No meaning in any talks unless credible guarantee is provided": Iran sets terms for dialogue with US
New Delhi: Keeping the door open for diplomacy, Iran has stated that any negotiation process with the US is meaningless until Washington provides a "credible guarantee" to prevent future acts of aggression by Israel and the US. In an email interview with ANI, Iran's Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi emphasised Tehran's conditions for resuming dialogue with Washington. "As for negotiations with the United States, considering their betrayal of diplomacy and complicity with the Zionist regime in launching illegal attacks on Iran -- while a diplomatic process was still ongoing -- there will be no meaning or value in any talks unless a credible guarantee is provided to prevent the recurrence of such acts of aggression by the US and Israel in future negotiations," he said. The ambassador was referring to two major military operations carried out last month. On June 13, Israel launched "Operation Rising Lion", conducting widespread airstrikes on Iranian soil targeting nuclear sites at Natanz and Fordow, missile production centres, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) command bases. Several top IRGC commanders and nuclear scientists were reportedly assassinated during the operation. This was followed by US strikes on June 21-22 under "Operation Midnight Hammer", which also targeted Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Iran has strongly condemned both operations, calling them a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter. "The Israeli regime, which possesses nuclear weapons and has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), attacked our country under the pretext of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. There is no evidence of such intentions, and our nuclear program is under the strictest IAEA inspections," Elahi stated. He further added that the US attacks lacked any legal justification and described them as "a crime of aggression."He also claimed that the operations involved cyber and terrorist elements, resulting in the deaths of several scientists, professors, military figures, and innocent civilians."These attacks represent an unprecedented and flagrant violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, the non-proliferation regime, resolutions of the IAEA Board of Governors, and UN Security Council Resolution 2231," Elahi said. The envoy also accused the US and Israel of undermining diplomacy. "The Zionist regime's attacks, in collusion with the US, occurred just two days before the sixth round of Iran-U.S. negotiations. It was a betrayal of diplomacy and a clear indication of America's lack of seriousness in dialogue. "Dismissing Israel's justification of the attack as a preemptive act to neutralise an existential threat, Elahi asserted, "This claim is entirely baseless and has no foundation in international law. Iran has never attacked any country in its history. Even though we do not recognise Israel and view it as an occupying and apartheid regime, our position on the Palestinian issue is peaceful -- a referendum involving all original inhabitants." On the nuclear issue, the ambassador reiterated that Iran's programme remains peaceful. "According to IAEA reports, Iran's nuclear activities show no deviation toward weaponisation. The justification by Israel and the US for attacking peaceful facilities is both illegal and illogical." Responding to questions about Iran's recent decision to limit cooperation with the IAEA, Elahi said Tehran remains a member of the NPT and is committed to its provisions. However, he blamed the Agency's politicisation for the current situation. "The Parliament's decision to suspend cooperation reflects public dissatisfaction with the IAEA's biased behaviour, especially its Director General's silence on the attacks. The expectation was that he would either help prevent such aggression or at least condemn it -- he did neither," Elahi said.
