Virginia tabs VCU's Ryan Odom as head coach
Virginia named Ryan Odom as the 13th head coach in the program's history on Saturday morning.
The Cavaliers learned all about Odom in 2018, when upstart UMBC made history under his direction by becoming the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament by upending Virginia.
Odom, 50, also has guided Utah State and VCU to the NCAA Tournament.
The Cavaliers parted ways with interim coach Ron Sanchez on March 13, just hours after losing to Georgia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Virginia finished with a 15-17 record.
Sanchez took over when national championship-winning coach Tony Bennett announced his retirement just three weeks before the start of the season.
Odom led the Rams to a 52-21 record over the past two seasons, including a 28-7 mark in 2024-25. The latter team secured a share of the Atlantic-10 regular-season title, won the conference tournament championship and appeared in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, dropping an 80-71 decision to BYU in the first round on Thursday afternoon in Denver.
Odom owns a 201-117 overall coaching record with Charlotte (2014-15), UMBC (2016-21), Utah State (2021-23) and VCU (2023-25).
The appointment of Odom is a homecoming of sorts, as he grew up in Charlottesville while his father, Dave, served as an assistant basketball coach on Terry Holland's staff from 1982-89. The younger Odom was a ballboy for the Cavaliers.

Obermueller's third-team All-American honors add to his growing list of accomplishments from the past season, which now includes a 2025 All-Big Ten Tournament team and an ABCA/Rawlings NCAA All-Midwest Region first-team selection. While Obermueller could be in line for more honors following the conclusion of the 2025 College World Series later this month, a potential return for his senior season with the Hawkeyes could be vital to the program's success as they hope to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2023. Advertisement Following a 64-win run that saw them finish atop the Eastern Conference for the first time since the LeBron James days, the Cavaliers appeared well-positioned to make a deep postseason run and perhaps threaten to win their first title in nine years. Instead, Cleveland was felled in five brisk bouts by the No. 4-seeded Indiana Pacers during a semifinal clash. The Pacers are themselves now 1-1 in the NBA Finals against the mighty Oklahoma City Thunder. There are a few caveats to that second round playoff defeat. For one, two-time All-Star Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland was struggling with a left great toe injury that caused him to miss the first two games of the Pacers series, and limited his effectiveness when he did return to the floor for Game 3. ESPN's Shams Charania reports that Garland is now undergoing a surgery on that toe, which could see him miss the start of 2025-26. All-NBA power forward Evan Mobley and sixth man forward De'Andre Hunter both sat out Game 2 with respective maladies of their own, while six-time All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell missed the second half of a critical Game 4 loss with an ailment. Advertisement Even with those injury issues, Cleveland looked shockingly disjointed against the faster, more athletic Pacers, and the fit of Garland and Mitchell came under scrutiny. Now, Chris Fedor of has proposed an intriguing blockbuster trade that could see the club ditch Garland, still just 25, and add more wing depth around Mitchell, while definitively making him the Cavaliers' lead guard. In the hypothetical deal, the Cavaliers would acquire All-Defensive small forward Jaden McDaniels, intriguing rookie Terrance Shannon Jr., and two-way combo guard Donte DiVincenzo in exchange for Garland. Advertisement "Minnesota has been a long-time Garland admirer — even going back to 2019 draft night — and it needs shot creation alongside Anthony Edwards," writes Fedor. "Perhaps being surrounded by dogged, lengthy perimeter defenders and the league's preeminent rim protector (Rudy Gobert) will help Garland?" Nets projected to take Michigan C Danny Wolf No. 27 in 2025 NBA Draft
The Brooklyn Nets have some important decisions to make ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft that begins on June 25 in which the team will have five picks to use. Brooklyn is focused on more than just the Draft, but when it comes to their future, the Nets will have to do their homework given that the players they take this year could be crucial members of the roster. In his latest mock draft for Bleacher Report, Jonathan Wasserman projected the Nets to take Michigan center Danny Wolf with the 27th overall pick in the Draft, the last of four first-round picks Brooklyn has at its disposal. Wolf, standing at 6-foot-11 and 252 pounds, is one of the more interesting players in this class given his ability to handle the ball and shoot at his size. Advertisement "Danny Wolf made a strong, final pitch to scouts against Auburn, finishing with 20 points and a number of eye-opening highlights that showcased his creation and shotmaking," Wasserman wrote on Wolf. "Though his three-point numbers might not indicate shooting improvement, he added a pull-up and step-back to his repertoire this year." Wolf, 21, is coming off a junior season with the Wolverines in which he averaged 13.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 33.6% from three-point land. Wolf put forth his production for a Michigan team that finished the 2024-25 regular season with a 27-10 record, allowing them to make the NCAA Tournament where they made it all the way to the Sweet 16 before losing to the Auburn Tigers. While it will be interesting to see if Wolf last until the 27th overall pick in a class that seems to taper off around the 12th pick or so, his skill set will be interesting for every team that has a first-round pick outside of the Lottery. "A 7-footer who made 21 dribble jumpers, served as Michigan's lead playmaker and still averaged 9.7 boards and 1.4 blocks is bound to entice a number of teams," Wasserman continued.
