Luck of the Irish? Jockey John Allen chases fifth South Australian Derby with Statuario
Allen scored a first Group 1 win in the 2016 South Australian Derby aboard Howard Be Thy Name, and nine years later, the Irish hoop is poised for a remarkable fifth Derby win aboard favourite Statuario in Saturday's $1m three-year-old feature.
It's no surprise Allen, who is based in Victoria, enjoys returning to Morphettville.
He's striking at 33.3 per cent in Group 1 races in Adelaide, with seven wins from 21 rides.
He won the Robert Sangster Stakes and Australasian Oaks in 2023, along with The Goodwood in 2020, handing him SA's quartet of Group 1s.
'I've been lucky down there, I've got on some good horses,' Allen, who won the 2021 Derby aboard Explosive Jack, said.
'I really enjoy riding on the main track at Morphettville, I've had a lot of luck around it, maybe it's just the way I ride a bit – it's certainly been a happy hunting ground for me.
'It's hard to believe it's nine years ago now (first Group 1), I've had plenty of luck in Adelaide every time, you have to get on the right horses but it's been a lucky place for me.'

Allen is better equipped than most when it comes to profiling a Derby horse, and Statuario, a son of D'argento, has given the indication that he fits the Derby mould.
'He seems to be taking the right steps, it's a different formline to the Chairman's (Stakes), it will be interesting to see how they measure up,' he said.
'I suppose he's probably the in-form horse going into the race so hopefully he can produce on Saturday.'
Statuario was an impressive winner of the Galilee Series Final (2400m) last start at Caulfield, the two-length win suggested that he will handle Saturday's 2500m Derby journey.
'We had a bit of a concern about him running the 2400m, obviously the Derby will be a high pressure race, hopefully he can handle that,' he said.
'He was impressive (last start), it probably didn't look the strongest of races, but the form out of it hasn't actually been too bad.
'He had the right run, but he still won it pretty dominantly, I think it's a good lead-up hopefully.'

Pakenham trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne are chasing their first Group 1 win in Australia since relocating from New Zealand in 2022, and Allen would love to be the jockey to deliver it with Statuario.
'They made the move over here to Australia so I suppose it's a big race for them to be on the big stage and show what they are about,' Allen said.
'Their horse is in great form at the moment, I've only really started riding for them in the last few months, they'll have the horse in tip top shape come Saturday.'
Statuario has drawn barrier three, and is a $4.20 favourite with Sportsbet.

Gus The Great is headstrong, can't be told what to do and has a touch of arrogance about him. This was how part-owner and trainer Joe Pride described the three-year-old chestnut making his debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday before refuting suggestions the racehorse was named after the well-known NRL commentator, former player and coach, Phil 'Gus' Gould. Pride, who also has another first-starter in the race, Isle of Wight, said Gus The Great showed promise with a close second in a barrier trial earlier this month. 'I like Gus The Great, he reminds me a bit of (former Group 1-winning sprinter) Tiger Tees,'' Pride said. 'You can't tell him what to do, there is a touch of arrogance about him, and a lot of good horses have an arrogance about them. 'He's trialled really well and so has Isle Of Wight. I'm happy for them both to race on Wednesday.'' With the prospect of a very heavy track on Wednesday, Pride has opted to scratch well-bred three-year-olds Attica and Lupa Capitolina from the second race on the card, the Inglis Xtra Bonus Maiden (1300m). Godolphin's Attica is by former champion racehorse and sire Lonhro, and is the first foal out of multiple Group 2 winner Savatiano. Lupa Capitolina, by leading sire Almanzor out of the Shamardal mare Las Brisas, is a half-sister to Pride's stable star, dual Group 1 winner Ceolwulf. However, wet conditions won't deter Pride from starting Investment in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1600m) and The Replicant in the Hawaii Five Oh At Vinery Handicap (1400m). 'Those older horses, Investment and The Replicant, are fit and in-form, and they get through the going,'' he added. Pride is also keen for stable star Ceolwulf to resume in the Group 1 $1 million Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. 'Ceolwulf will run, as long as the races are on,'' said Pride in anticipation of a heavy track Saturday given the forecast for rain most days this week. Triple Crown has raced many outstanding horses over the last two decades, most notably dual The Everest winner Redzel, and Group 1 winners like Mazu, Hot Snitzel and Peggy Jean, but they haven't really tapped into the international market – until now. 'We have only had one import before who didn't do much out here but Formal Display does look promising,'' Triple Crown's Chris Ward said. 'He has trialled very well and might be even sharper than we anticipated.'' Formal Display won two of his seven starts in Ireland before being purchased by Triple Crown for about $200,000 at the Tattersall's October Sale in England last year. 'He's been in and out of work a couple of times with Annabel and Rob (Archibald) but he seems to have taken well to the Aussie style of training,'' Ward said. Formal Display led most of the way to win a Scone trial in mid-July then again showed plenty of speed before finishing a close third to Birdman in a strong Randwick trial on heavy ground about two weeks ago. Jones booked in for spring fling with Zarastro
Brisbane's top trainer Tony Gollan has placed his confidence in jockey Angela Jones to break through for her first Group 1 victory, indicating she will likely retain the ride on Zarastro for the star gelding's entire spring campaign. Jones went within a whisker of winning her first Group 1 on Zarastro in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) in June, only to be denied by the brilliance of superstar hoop James McDonald on the Chris Waller-trained mare Joliestar. And in a sign of how far Jones has improved in the past 12 months, Gollan said the 24-year-old Queenslander would likely stay on Zarastro for his spring campaign, despite the availability of several champion Group 1-winning jockeys. 'Yeah, well there's no reason to take her off,' Gollan said on Monday before boarding a plane from Melbourne back to Brisbane. 'She's got a good association and a good record with the horse so provided the prep is going well and she's going well with him then there's no reason to change. Picture: Grant Peters - Trackside Photography Gollan could have easily sought the services of champion jockey Blake Shinn, who rode his Cox Plate-bound stable star Antino to memorable victories in the Toorak Handicap last spring and the Doomben Cup in the Queensland winter carnival. Shinn is currently serving a nine-meeting suspension for careless riding but will return to the saddle at Ballarat on August 26. However, Jones has proved she has the right temperament, hunger, work ethic and class to break through for a Group 1 victory after going so close in the Kingsford Smith Cup. 'I think it's a really good move to bring her down and ride him (Zarastro),' said Gollan, who also watched Antino run around in Monday's Cranbourne jumpouts. 'He's always been a quirky little bugger and she gets along with him really well. 'She came down and gave him a jumpout and had a bit of a feel for Victoria, what it's like going this way around.' She has two metro victories from 12 starts but has plenty of time to catch early leader Ben Thompson (seven wins from 37 rides). Since former Waller-trained Zarastro came to Gollan's stable in mid 2023, Jones has ridden the gelding in most of his trials and races, including his victory in the $1m Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) on the Gold Coast in January. In-form jockey Ryan Maloney will ride stablemate Golden Boom in the $175,000 Carlyon Stakes at The Valley (1000m) on Saturday. Golden Boom finished runner-up in that Listed race last year to Mornington Glory, which went on to win the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) just two weeks later.
