India to host FIDE Chess World Cup in October-November
The tournament that will see 206 players battling for the coveted title and qualification spots in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament. India last hosted the event in 2002 in Hyderabad where Viswanathan Anand won the title.
The players will compete in a knockout format, where the losing player in each round is eliminated.

"The event has used several formats over the years, but since 2021, it has followed a single-elimination format. Each round spans three days: two classical games on the first two days, followed by tie-breaks on the third day, if necessary," FIDE stated.
In the first round, the top 50 players receive byes, while players seeded from 51 to 206 compete, with pairings based on the principle of the top half versus the reversed lower half.
"The top three finishers of the 2025 World Cup will earn direct qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, which determines the challenger for the World Chess Championship," FIDE said.
Reigning world champion D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, the runner-up of the 2023 World Cup, and Arjun Erigaisi, currently ranked world number five, are among the stars who would be seen in action. World number one Magnus Carlsen has also qualified to compete in the biennial event that he won in 2023.
India has recently hosted major events, including the 2022 Chess Olympiad, Tata Steel Chess India, the 2024 World Junior U20 Championships 2024, and the 5th leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix in April this year.

Indian chess fans' enthusiasm has always been remarkable, and we anticipate great interest in the event among local chess lovers, both on-site and online," FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said in a press release.

England is living on the brink and survived another near-inevitable elimination all the way to another Women's European Championship final. The defending champion broke Italy's hearts — twice — in a 2-1 win after extra time in their semifinal on Tuesday. Chloe Kelly scored the decisive goal in the 119th minute, shooting home the rebound only after Italy goalkeeper Laura Giuliani saved her penalty kick. Italy was forced into extra time because another substitute, Michelle Agyemang, leveled the game deep into stoppage time. Kelly and Agyemang also were crucial for England in another great escape in the quarterfinals against Sweden. England will now defend its title in Sunday's final in Basel against either world champion Spain or Germany. Their semifinal is Wednesday in Zurich. 'When it finishes like this I am enjoying it but it's a little bit dramatic,' said England coach Sarina Wiegman, who has never been eliminated from the tournament. Her third goal in just her fourth national-team game also was her second crucial equalizer in the Euro 2025 knockout rounds. The Arsenal forward almost won the game before Kelly, but her deft lob in the 117th rebounded off the Italy crossbar. 'I think that gave us a new lease of energy,' Kelly said of Agyemang's impact. 'When your forward is doing that, it's special.' England defender Jess Carter was not in England's starting lineup for the first time, for tactical reasons, two days after revealing she was the target of racist abuse online during the tournament. Carter came on for the closing minutes to protect England's lead and got a rousing cheer from fans. Kelly said victory after the team united behind Carter was 'a powerful moment to show this is what we expect.'
