DA demands answers from Police Minister as Correctional Services remains silent on missing inmates
The DA demands answers regarding the possible disappearance of two dangerous inmates at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre.
The DA has written to the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, to confirm whether his Department has been informed of the possible disappearance of Me-Kayle Timmie and Mikyle Mentoor - two convicted offenders who, according to a High Court order, should be detained at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre until at least October 2025.
It has now been almost a week since a DA oversight visit to Pollsmoor revealed that officials could not account for either individual.
Despite this, no confirmation has been issued by the Minister of Correctional Services, nor has any response been received to the DA's formal letter sent to him on 14 May.
The Minister's silence is troubling, particularly because Xolani Du Preez, a third offender who was subject to the same court order, was only re-admitted to Pollsmoor on 22 April after allegedly committing a robbery in Table View.
That incident – and Du Preez's return to Pollsmoor - should have triggered immediate concern within the Department and prompted a review of the whereabouts of all three individuals.
The fact that this was ignored and not brought to the attention of the Minister points to a serious breakdown in communication between Correctional Services senior management and the Ministry. It is deeply concerning that the Department has failed to acknowledge or act upon such a critical lapse in inmate tracking and compliance with court orders.
If Timmie and Mentoor have indeed been released, Minister Groenewald should have confirmed this by now and explained what steps are being taken to ensure the safety of victims and the South African public.
The DA will continue to push for full transparency and accountability. A correctional system that cannot reliably confirm the presence or absence of sentenced prisoners is a system in crisis.

As far as we know, the issues have been resolved and the group is settling well and excited about their new lives," she said. Busa went on to say that it is not unusual for people to be housed in hotels in a refugee programme. "The US government would never deliberately abandon people with no resources. Those posting videos are just clickbaiting people by trying to dramatise a situation in a thinly veiled attempt to discredit the refugee process."

Outrage as Joslin Smith's mom Kelly 'finds love' in prison
Kelly Smith – the mother of missing girl Joslin Smith – has reportedly found love whilst in prison, and South Africans are engaged. Earlier this month, the Saldanha Bay woman and her former partner, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, and pal Steveno van Rhyn were sentenced to life for trafficking and kidnapping. Joslin disappeared on 19 February 2024. She has yet to be found. According to various social media users, reports have emerged that Kelly Smith has allegedly found love with a man behind bars. The rumoured prison fling developed whilst Kelly and the man were being held in police custody cells in Langebaan. At the time, Kelly was attending her trial for trafficking and kidnapping her daughter, Joslin Smith, at the Saldanha Bay Multipurpose Centre, sitting under the Western Cape High Court. She is now serving her time in Pollsmoor Prison, where she is likely to appeal her sentence. Kelly's rumoured partner is facing charges of business robbery. On social media, content creators were shocked at the revelation. TikToker Bleskop Brille shared: 'We do not want to know about Kelly's love life, true or not. We want the truth about Joslin! Another, Ash Baby, posted: 'Kelly is a true narcissist, like Judge Nathan Erasmus said. She will manipulate everyone and everything to get her way.' A third, Facebook user 'Coloured Girls Rock,' posted: 'Kelly has a new boyfriend, and she's in jail, sending love letters to some dude. I don't even know if she's got perfume to spray on the envelope. The missing girl's biological father is Jose Emke, who reportedly ended their 'abusive' relationship. It's unclear when Kelly and Boeta parted ways. However, reports have indicated that Kelly miscarried Boeta's baby whilst being held in police custody in Pollsmoor Prison last year.
