New Mexico star PG Donovan Dent entering transfer portal
Dent averaged 20.4 points and 6.4 assists and shot 40.9 percent from 3-point range in 35 games this season and won Mountain West Player of the Year honors. His 224 assists are second most in a season by a New Mexico player.
Dent has 1,400 points, 493 assists and 131 steals in 104 games over three seasons. His assist total is seventh-best in program history.
He reportedly will consider a return to New Mexico.
However, a return probably is a long shot for a multi-faceted point guard who scores and passes at an elite level. Schools in power conferences will come calling with large offers for Dent, who will be one of the more sought-after talents in the portal.
Dent led the Lobos to a 27-8 record -- the school's most wins since a 29-6 mark in 2012-13. New Mexico recorded a first-round NCAA Tournament win over Marquette before losing to Michigan State in the second round.
Lobos guard Tru Washington also entered the portal, according to the Albuquerque Journal. Washington averaged 11.1 points and 4.0 rebounds in 34 games (33 starts) this season, his second with the Lobos.

NCAA basketball tournament won't expand for 2026, possible in 2027
"Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men's and women's basketball championships. However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships," Gavitt said. One of the most divisive topics in college hoops, the expansion of the tournament had been picking up steam in recent months by the high powers of college sports. At a Big 12 meeting in May, NCAA president Charlie Baker told reporters the NCAA had "good conversation" with its media partners about the possibility of increasing the number of teams in the field and wanted a final determination in the coming months. On July 10, Gavitt said no decision was made on tournament expansion after it was "discussed at length" during meetings for the committees. While those in power had building toward expansion, the possibility of it has drawn the ire of college basketball enthusiasts, with the common belief adding more teams ruins what is considered a perfect tournament, with any and all tweaks unwarranted. The men's tournament expanded from 53 teams to 64 in 1985, and the format stood until 2011, when the First Four was introduced and grew the field from 65 to 68 teams. On the women's side, the bracket increased from 48 teams to 64 in 1994, and the First Four was also implemented in 2022. When the First Four was expanded, it meant more at-large selections and conference tournament champions had to play their way into participating in the first round of the tournament. It led to Cinderella runs to the Final Four like Virginia Commonwealth in 2011 and UCLA in 2021. Kansas coach Bill Self hospitalized, has 2 stents inserted
July 25 - Bill Self, the winningest men's basketball coach in Kansas Jayhawks history, was admitted to the hospital and had two stents inserted on Thursday, the university announced. The 62-year-old Self, who has guided the Jayhawks since 2003, led the team in its final summer practice on Thursday morning. According to Kansas officials, he was then escorted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after he "felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms." Per the university, the procedure to insert two stents "went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. "He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon." Self's health has caused concern in the past. He missed the Big 12 conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament in March 2023 due to a heart condition. He underwent a standard heart catheterization after experiencing chest tightness. Self also had two stents placed to treat blocked arteries. Self has won two national championships while at the Kansas helm, amassing a 609-156 record over 22 seasons with the program. Under Self, the Jayhawks have won 16 regular-season conference titles and eight conference tournament championships. --Field Level Media

Report: Flyers' top draft pick Porter Martone to play at Michigan St.
July 21 - Porter Martone, selected No. 6 overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2025 NHL Draft, will delay signing to play for Michigan State in the 2025-26 season, Sportsnet reported Monday. The Canada native spent last season playing for the Brampton Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League and tallied 98 points (37 goals, 61 assists) in 57 games. He added nine points (four goals, five assists) in six playoff games. The Flyers will retain the draft rights to the 18-year-old forward. "We are aware of the reports surrounding Porter and will support what he decides to do," Flyers general manager Danny Briere told The Philadelphia Inquirer. The Spartans won the Big Ten title in 2024-25 and were the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament but lost to Cornell in the first round. The Flyers finished last season with a 33-39-10 record (76 points) and have not made the Stanley Cup playoffs since the 2019-20 season. --Field Level Media
