Marcos, Trump to discuss tariff in Washington meeting

GMA Network4 days ago
The Philippine government is hoping to have a mutually acceptable and beneficial tariff deal with the United States amid the visit of President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. to Washington, D.C. next week.
This was mentioned by Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano during a Palace press briefing.
She mentioned that the steep 20% tariff rate on Filipino goods entering the US would be tackled during the President's bilateral meeting with American counterpart Donald Trump.
Solano also said regional issues and concerns would be discussed as well.
Aside from Trump, Marcos will have a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 21.
Several businesses in the US also expressed their intention to meet with the Philippine leader, Solano said.
Marcos will be leaving Manila on Sunday, July 20. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Sara Duterte hits eyed ammunition manufacturing site in PH

Vice President Sara Duterte has criticized the statement of an envoy that the Philippines is open to the production of ammunition in the country in a bid to enhance the defense ties between Manila and Washington. The Vice President, who is currently in The Hague, Netherlands to visit her detained father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, stressed that the move would undermine the country's independent foreign policy. 'Ang nakalagay sa ating Saligang Batas, na meron tayong dapat independent foreign policy. Kung 'yung ginagawa ng gobyerno ay kumikiling sa isang bansa lang, ibig sabihin no'n, wala na tayong true independent policy,' Vice President Sara said in an interview on Monday, July 21. (Our Constitution states that we must have an independent foreign policy. If what the government is doing is only for the benefit of another country, that means we no longer have a true independent policy.) 'So, dapat hindi lang ako 'yung kumukontra, lahat tayong mga Pilipino kumukontra sa plano na ito dahil ang ating mga galaw ay dapat for the interest of our country. Hindi para sa interest ng ibang mga bansa,' she added. (So, I should not be the only one who should oppose this plan, but all of us Filipinos because our actions should be for the interest of our country and not of other countries.) It was Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel ''Babe'' Romualdez who earlier said that an ammunition production facility would be a 'good way of being able to help a combination of both defense and economic cooperation' between the Philippines and the US. The ambassador said that this would also generate employment in the country. It was also previously reported that US lawmakers were exploring the possibility of establishing a joint ammunition manufacturing facility in Subic Bay. The facility will reportedly enable the forward staging of ammunition stockpiles and related materials such as nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, and acid. Duterte, however, pointed out that Filipinos should only act for the benefit of the Philippines, and not of other countries. 'Hindi lang Amerika, kahit anong bansa 'yan—hindi para sa kanila ang galaw nating mga Pilipino. Ang mga ginagawa natin ay dapat para sa interes ng ating bansa,' the Vice President said. Mapua unveils electric vehicle prototype for Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2026

Engineering students at Mapua University are taking on a new challenge as they prepare for next year's Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. For the first time since the eco-marathon was introduced in Asia in 2010, Mapua's Cardinal One will compete with a battery-electric vehicle after fielding prototypes that run on internal combustion engines. Still under development, the electric vehicle prototype, called Aguila Neo Electric, was presented to the alumni, partners, sponsors, and media at Mapua's Intramuros campus on Saturday night, July 19. In the upcoming months, the EV prototype will go through several track tests and enhancements before being shipped to Qatar in time for the competition in 2026. ''After 15 years of competing in internal combustion, Cardinal One has transitioned to full electric propulsion—reflecting our commitment to innovation and sustainability. Aguila Neo Electric represents not only a technological leap but also the dedication and resilience of Filipino student engineers redefining the future of clean mobility,'' Cardinal One said. The event also recognized the legacy of previous Cardinal One teams that competed on the global stage. Shell Eco-marathon serves as a platform for students to showcase their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills to construct energy-efficient vehicles and then compete on the track. Mapua won the technical innovation award twice, in 2013 and 2024, in the internal combustion category. According to Shell, the award ''recognizes the team's ability to integrate advanced technologies into their vehicle design, illustrating their high level of technical proficiency and creative ingenuity.'' Mapua's previous teams were also recognized for their safety practices. —GMA Integrated News

Filipino convict among illegal aliens arrested in US over weekend — DHS

The American flag flies near the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol in Washington on November 2, 2018. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst NEW YORK — A Filipino was among at least 11 illegal aliens convicted of various crimes who were arrested during separate operations by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities over the weekend. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the individual was a 29-year-old illegal alien from the Philippines. He was arrested in Middlesex, Massachusetts. According to the DHS, the individual was convicted of multiple charges, including rape, aggravated rape of a child, rape of a child with force, four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14. Information about the arrested Filipino was released by the DHS on July 21 as it reported "criminal illegal aliens" arrested over the weekend, "including murderers, pedophiles, and rapists." In a statement, US Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the arrests were part of President Donald Trump's campaign against criminal illegal aliens. "Over the weekend, our brave ICE agents arrested more depraved criminal illegal aliens, including murderers, rapists, and three child pedophiles. These are the types of barbaric criminals our ICE law enforcement officers are arresting and removing from American communities every day," McLaughlin said. Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. released an advisory in response to the recent arrests of Filipinos in connection with child abuse cases, reminding Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) that such crimes are serious violations of American law. The embassy did not mention a specific incident but the statement was made after US online news Wavy said the Filipino workers of Carnival Sunshine cruise line, all bearing valid 10-year C-1/D visas, were "forcibly removed in handcuffs" by Customs and Border Patrol officers at the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. "In view of the increasing incidents of arrests, detention, and deportation of individuals due to child pornography-related offenses, the Philippine Embassy reminds members of the Filipino community and overseas Filipino workers in the United States, including those onboard vessels in U.S. territorial waters, that child pornography is one of the worst forms of child exploitation. Consuming such material perpetuates this exploitation," the embassy said in its advisory. "U.S. federal and state laws criminalize the production, promotion, possession, viewing, transportation, and distribution of child pornography. Individuals caught engaging in these acts may be prosecuted, penalized, and deported." "In this regard, everyone is strongly urged to refrain from downloading, possessing, viewing, transporting, distributing, or selling child pornography," the advisory said. The embassy also assured the Filipino community that it is ready to assist individuals who believe they have been wrongly accused, urging them to contact the Embassy or the nearest Philippine Consulate immediately. "The Philippine Embassy respects the right of individuals to seek redress or take legal action if they believe they have been wrongly accused of legal infractions. Please contact the Philippine Embassy or the nearest Philippine Consulate General and Migrant Workers Office for consular and welfare assistance," the embassy said. — Dave Llavanes Jr./ VDV, GMA Integrated News
