Hong Kong cricket's grand old man says ODI dream still alive before Italy clash

A bullish Ehsan Khan remained optimistic Hong Kong would resuscitate their Challenge League B campaign in what has become a critical meeting with Italy on Sunday.
With only the two leading teams following next year's third leg staying in contention to achieve ODI status and 2027 World Cup qualification, Hong Kong are fixed in third following a damaging 48 hours in midweek.
A heavy loss to Uganda came after Wednesday's game against minnows Tanzania was washed out. Another defeat against second-placed Italy would leave daylight between Hong Kong and the top two.

Hong Kong surrendered their ODI status in 2018, and Khan said he would play for 'at least another two to three years' in the hope of 'seeing that standard of cricket again with my teammates'.

"Importantly, he has spent the last decade coaching at the very highest levels of the women's game in Europe and brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football," she added. Montemurro, who won trophies with women's teams at Lyon, Juventus, Arsenal and Melbourne City, will lead the Matildas to the Asian Cup on home soil next year, then through qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup. Hong Kong's top netball officials said securing the Asian Championships next summer could prove a springboard to qualifying for the next World Cup. Advertisement The regional championships, expected to be held in August next year, double as the qualifying event for the 2027 World Cup, with the top two teams reaching the finals, held in Sydney. Hong Kong's netball chief said the organisation had long wanted to host the next Asian Championships and it was only following the opening of Kai Tak Sports Park that the opportunity presented itself. 'Our goal has always been to host a World Cup qualifying event but suitable facilities have posed a significant challenge,' Connie Wong Ar-yan, president of Netball Hong Kong, China, said. 'KTSP provides the necessary space and infrastructure for an international event. 'Qualifying for the World Cup has been a long-held dream of ours, especially with netball's potential inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. This proximity to the Olympics makes our World Cup qualification even more crucial.' Hong Kong will host the netball Asian Championships at Kai Tak Sports Park next year. Photo: Reuters One of the three Argentine judges presiding in the trial of seven members of Diego Maradona's medical team charged with negligent homicide in the soccer star's 2020 death stepped down from the case on Tuesday amid accusations of ethical breaches, leaving the future of the proceedings uncertain. Judge Julieta Makintach stood down from the case after video surfaced in recent days showing her apparently being interviewed by a camera crew as part of a documentary in the corridors of the Buenos Aires courthouse and in her office. Court rules forbid such interviews involving a judge mid-trial. The trial began on March 11 in the South American country where the World Cup winner is a revered figure. The defendants have denied the charges of "simple homicide with eventual intent" in Maradona's treatment. If convicted, they could face prison sentences of between eight and 25 years. "This is a judicial tragedy," Fernando Burlando, a lawyer for Maradona's eldest daughters, Dalma and Gianinna, told reporters on Tuesday, referring to the judge's behavior. Prosecutors have described the care given to Maradona as reckless, deficient and unprecedented. The next steps in the trial remain unclear. Burlando said the trial could resume later this year with a new judge appointed to join the case's remaining two. Maradona, considered one of the greatest players of all time, died at home in Buenos Aires in November 2020 from heart failure at age 60 while recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot experienced days earlier. His death prompted an outpouring of grief and finger-pointing in Argentina over who was to blame after Maradona's years-long battle with addiction and ill health. Maradona led Argentina to a World Cup victory in 1986 and scored one of the most memorable goals in sporting history against England.
