Bonner: Getting transfer business done early will be key for Celtic
Pat Bonner says getting transfer business done early this summer could be key for Celtic with Champions League qualifiers on the horizon.
The former Hoops goalkeeper, who also earned 80 international caps for the Republic of Ireland, was speaking at the launch of the Refugee World Cup on Monday.
He believes the Premiership champions, who have already added Kieran Tierney to the squad, have a good base to work from, but insists Brendan Rodgers will be looking to add some more quality players as they look to kick on again.
The 65-year-old, who spent his whole career at Parkhead between 1978 and 1997, said: 'They are coming from a beautiful base, aren't they? They won the double, they had a fantastic year in Europe and that has given them huge confidence, especially with the group they have to work with.
'But you are always trying to improve the squad, there are certain positions that Brendan will have earmarked, they haven't announced anything yet, but they will be working towards that aim.
'He knows what he needs now, to improve the squad and to improve the team, he spoke last year about quality rather than quantity, and if he brings in one or two, as he doesn't need a lot, then can motivate the group that is already there and fill a few gaps that emerge.
'One or two might be moving on as well, that's the nature of football, but I think he is in a great position.
'The most important thing is that Brendan is still there and is going to be there for a while.
'I'm all for (getting players in as early as possible), if you can identify and recruit early, it's not easy in the market. I think when Ange Postecoglou was at Celtic he did that very well and successfully and that has been a good learning process for Celtic if you can get the squad in and together early.
'Kieran Tierney was announced very early, and it is great to see Kieran back, he will be an improved player because he has more experience and he is still young, so he will be an asset.
'If they can bring some more quality in beside him, and do it early enough so they can be ready for the Champions League qualifiers, which will be important games and won't be easy, that will stand them in good stead.'

Gareth Bale part of group seeking Plymouth takeover
The Telegraph were first to report that the 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was part of the group seeking to buy Argyle. The PA news agency understands the group featuring Bale has registered an interest in buying Argyle, but the process is at a very early stage. Should the deal go through, Bale would be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. Bale's former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor and co-owner in Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Plymouth declined to comment. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020.

Former England captain Owen Farrell seals Saracens return
The former England captain called time on his 16-year stay with the Gallagher Premiership side at the end of last season. But fly-half Farrell has agreed to leave Racing 92 and return to Saracens after a disappointing, injury-disrupted campaign with the Top 14 outfit. Welcome home, @owen_faz 👑#YourSaracens💫 — Saracens Rugby Club (@Saracens) June 16, 2025 He told the club's official website: 'Saracens is my home and the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously. 'Having watched from afar this season, it is clear to see that the club has incredible potential, and I can't wait to get back in the mix for the 25/26 season.' The 33-year-old ex-club captain has signed a two-year deal at the StoneX Stadium to rejoin a club with whom he won three European Cups and six Premiership crowns. Farrell made his Saracens debut in 2008, 11 days after his 17th birthday, and amassed 256 appearances before heading for France. He has won 112 England caps and made six Test appearances for the British and Irish Lions, although he has not been included in the squad – coached by his father Andy – for this summer's tour of Australia. Farrell has not played Test rugby since the 2023 World Cup, initially taking a break to prioritise his mental wellbeing, before his move abroad made him ineligible for selection. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall is hoping the vastly-experienced stand-off will play a role in what he believes will be an exciting future for the club. McCall said: 'Owen has Saracens in his DNA. His competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club and we are delighted he has chosen to come home. 'He returns to a young group full of potential, players eager to learn, play and push for success. We know he will love being part of where this group, and this club, are headed.'

Lennon details Walter Smith's reaction to McCoist bust-up
The game, which has gone down in history with three red cards, 13 yellows and 34 fan arrests at Celtic Park, is remembered for the heated exchange between Lennon and McCoist. The match resulted in Scottish government intervention in the days that followed the cup replay, with Celtic emerging victorious courtesy of a Mark Wilson goal. Speaking on Open Goal, Lennon has delivered his version of events, as he claimed the altercation began after "nasty antics" from El Hadji Diouf. Lennon said: "El Hadji Diouf started it all. "Emilio Izaguirre got injured after Steven Whittacker caught him in a foul, got a second yellow and was sent off. "Diouf came over to get instructions when Tim Williamson was running on to treat Emilio. "Diouf gives him one of them (motions an elbow). "I clocked it and said 'you f*****g leave my staff alone'. "Coisty then came on to say 'don't talk to my players'. "So, that was the start of it really, then it got really spicy in the game." Lennon went on to describe the moment he and McCoist squared up to each other at the end of the match. He said: "I shook hands with Walter, then he goes. "Coisty said 'don't speak to my players like that,' and I f*****g snapped. "The normal thing to do is to shake hands and leave it, but I said 'is that right?'" Asked about Smith's reaction, Lennon continued: "He was amazing. "He gave us both a bollocking afterwards in my office - he told us to behave ourselves! "He was brilliant. "I loved him. "I had a lot of respect for him, he was a brilliant manager. "Really, really smart."
