ABC forced to delete story as it's revealed reporter received $16,000 from a weapons company for travel costs
The ABC is investigating one of its reporters after it was revealed he received $16,000 in travel costs from a weapons company he covered in one of his stories.
Andrew Greene travelled from Sydney to Germany on business class flights worth about $16,000, and was put up in hotels in Hamburg and Kiel to attend a press event for the German weapons company TKMS. The company paid for his trip.
The senior defence correspondent for the ABC later filed a segment for The World Today about TKMS including quotes from its CEO Oliver Burkhard. After revelations of Greene's junket came to light, the story was removed from the ABC website.
'We know what we're doing,' Mr Burkhard told Greene in the report.
'I know our competitors, they never have been exported in the past.'
Greene did not disclose the trip to either his ABC audience or his bosses, according to Media Watch.
As far as the ABC knew, he was on personal leave and had obtained audio of Mr Burkhard's press conference by email, rather than travelling to Germany in person.
Media Watch host Linton Besser was highly critical of the veteran reporter, saying that 'while Andrew Greene might have a long history as a news breaker, he's now been brought undone by weakness before temptation'.

'It's a cautionary if shabby tale of the risk every journalist takes in flirting with the generosities of a ruthless corporate sector.'
After Media Watch put questions to the national broadcaster about Greene's trip, his story was scrubbed from its website.
It has since launched an investigation into Greene's conduct.
'These are serious allegations and the ABC is investigating them,' ABC spokesperson Sally Jackson said in a statement on Monday.
'The ABC has rigorous editorial policies and any such behaviour, if proven, would be unacceptable and could constitute misconduct.

The former policeman accused of murdering a television presenter and his Qantas flight attendant partner has been hit with a fresh criminal charge. Beau Lamarre-Condon allegedly shot dead Jesse Baird, 26, and Luke Davies, 29, at Paddington in Sydney 's eastern suburbs in February 2024. He was originally charged with two counts of murder, later amended to indicate they were alleged to be related to domestic violence. Lamarre-Condon was then charged with aggravated break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, listed as 'stalking Jesse Baird'. In relation to that offence, police allege Lamarre-Condon broke into Mr Baird's Paddington house in August 2023, six months before he and Mr Davies were killed. On June 4, police laid a new second charge of aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence against the 29-year-old. Lamarre-Condon was due to face Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday in relation to the three existing and one new charge. Daily Mail Australia revealed earlier this month that Lamarre-Condon had offered to provide information about a woman he claims helped dispose of the bodies. '[He] wants to do the right thing for the families and is happy to assist investigators with information about who else played a part in the incident,' a source claimed. 'So far both the DPP and the officer in charge have failed to reply to the offer made by Lamarre-Condon's legal team for assistance.' Police allege that Lamarre-Condon bundled Mr Davies and Mr Baird's bodies into surfboard bags before dumping them at a farm in the Southern Tablelands. The source claimed a woman, who Lamarre-Condon knew through her partner, had told investigators she had waited at the fence line of the Bungonia property where the bodies were first dumped for 15 to 20 minutes. Phone records indicated Lamarre-Condon and the woman, previously described by police as 'an innocent agent', were at the farm for almost two hours, the source claimed. 'Police also located two sets of white overalls at the scene where bodies were located which indicates it was a two-person job,' the source said. A NSW Police spokeswoman said: 'As this matter is before the court, we are unable to comment.' A spokeswoman for the DPP said the same thing. Lamarre-Condon has spent almost 16 months in prison since the shootings, which were allegedly the result of a months-long campaign of 'predatory behaviour' targeting Mr Baird. The onetime celebrity chaser reportedly briefly dated Mr Baird before the TV presenter began a relationship with Mr Davies. Suspicions of foul play were raised after possessions belonging to the dead men were found in a skip bin in the southern Sydney suburb of Cronulla, leading police to Mr Baird's blood-smeared terrace. The case returned to Downing Centre Local Court last month after confidential discussions between prosecutors and the alleged killer's Legal Aid lawyer Alex Curnick. Both sides agreed 'things are progressing,' magistrate Megan Greenwood was told. A forensic psychiatrist's report was also tendered after Lamarre-Condon was assessed in previous weeks. Lamarre-Condon joined the force in 2019 and previously ran a celebrity blog, posing in photos with dozens of A-listers including Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles. Baird worked on TV programs Studio Ten and Totally Wild while Davies, his new boyfriend, was a respected Qantas flight attendant. Lamarre-Condon, who was sacked by the NSW Police Force in March 2024, has not entered pleas to any of the charges.
