Another Last-eight Exit for France Has Players Wondering When Their Turn will Come
France had won 11 in a row before they kicked off against Germany on Saturday, but wilted against the eight-times European champions -- despite having 11 players to Germany's 10 for most of the game -- losing 6-5 in a penalty shootout.
"We're wondering when it's going to be smiling for us at last," said Grace Geyoro, Reuters reported.
Geyoro put France ahead with a 14th-minute penalty in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Les Bleues have now been eliminated in the quarter-finals in seven of the past nine World Cups or Euros. They were also eliminated in the quarters in their last two Olympic appearances, in 2016 and 2024.
Germany swept them aside in the 2022 Euro semi-finals.
"I don't think we have a psychological problem," said France coach Laurent Bonadei. "We have opponents of quality, and it gets harder and harder.
"But I think my players gave us hope; Rome wasn't built in a day."
Bonadei, who was hired in August 2024, drew criticism when he left veteran centre-back Wendie Renard and France's all-time leading goalscorer Eugénie Le Sommer off his Euro 2025 squad in favour of younger players.
Bonadei quoted Einstein in his decision at the time, saying: "'Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.' I want different results for this team so I have gone with a different selection.
"It's something I've been thinking about since the start of the season."
France defender Sakina Karchaoui called the early exit "totally frustrating."
"We had so much faith in this group, in what we've built up and so on," she said. "But we don't have to throw it all away; on the contrary, you have to take a lot of positive things from it. And one day it will pass, we know that."
Bonadei pointed out after Saturday's loss that France will clash with Germany again in October in a two-legged Nations League semi-final.
Germany, meanwhile, play world champions Spain in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Niemann, Grace, Meronk tied for individual lead at LIV Golf UK
ROCESTER: Similar to last season, Joaquin Niemann entered this week's LIV Golf UK by JCB as the season-long points leader, with Jon Rahm in hot pursuit. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Niemann, a four-time winner this season, shot a bogey-free 65 on Friday at JCB Golf & Country Club to grab a share of the first-round lead with Cleeks GC's Adrian Meronk and Stinger GC's Branden Grace. The trio are one shot ahead of Majesticks' co-captain Lee Westwood, RangeGoats' captain Bubba Watson, and Niemann's Torque teammate Carlos Ortiz. The team leaderboard is also tightly bunched at the top with defending UK champions Legion XIII tied with Stinger and Torque at 11 under. Six other teams are within five shots of the lead. Rahm won the individual UK trophy for his first career LIV Golf victory a year ago, using it as a springboard to catch Niemann for the season-long Individual Championship in the regular-season finale. Niemann entered this week with a 15-point lead over Rahm and is now in a great position to build on his advantage, as Rahm shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 32nd. Crushers' captain Bryson DeChambeau, who is in third place in the standings, is tied for 11th after a 68. Based on projections after Friday's first round, Niemann would leave England with a 44-point lead, which would mean he would be guaranteed pole position in the standings going into the regular-season finale, LIV Golf Indianapolis, to determine the Individual Championship next month. Niemann, who birdied four of his first six holes, said: 'I'm in a really privileged situation to be on top of the rankings and being chased by Jon and Bryson. It just makes me a better athlete. I like that pressure.' Unlike Niemann, the other two players who share the lead are fighting different battles. Grace has spent most of the season in the drop zone (49th and below in points) and facing relegation while battling wrist problems, but the South African has found his form recently. He tied for fourth earlier this month in Andalucia, a result that moved him out of the drop zone, and he continued his fine play with a round that started hot (three birdies in his first four holes) and ended the same way. Meronk, meanwhile, returned to the kind of form on Friday that secured him the season-opening tournament in Riyadh. His 65 was his best score, relative to par, in his last 25 LIV Golf rounds. The Polish star, who finished with four birdies in his last five holes, said: 'Finally, I'm enjoying myself on the course and playing good golf again, which is quite exciting. 'It's great to be back in this position, and I'm really looking forward to this weekend and to three more tournaments this year.' Of the top eight players on the leaderboard, three are from England, led by the resurgent Westwood, the 52-year-old legend who tied an Open Championship record last week at Royal Portrush by shooting a back-nine 29. Michigan In Discussions To Kick Off 2026 Football Season In Germany
Michigan is having discussions about kicking off the 2026 football season against Western Michigan in Germany. The school announced Friday on social media that it is seeking to play at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on August 29, 2026. It would be the first game the Wolverines would play outside of North America. Athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement this would be a first-of-its-kind opportunity for the Wolverines and their fans. The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics and the interest in playing an international game would be unique, Manuel said. This would be a great opportunity to teach Go Blue to a new group of fans in Germany. Home to Eintracht Frankfurt of Bundesliga, the stadium features a retractable roof with a capacity of 55,000. Deutsche Bank Park has hosted five NFL games, including two regular-season games in 2023. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said they're always looking for unique opportunities for their players, noting the program has been to Italy, France, and South Africa over the past decade. The game would require a rescheduling of Michigan's home opener that's currently set for September 5. This game would provide another chance to grow our international fanbase, Moore said.
