What's new in London this season
See: One of the city's most popular art shows
A key event in London's summer social calendar is the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. This annual event, running from June 17 to August 17, celebrates art and creativity. There are more than 1,200 art pieces on display, ranging from print to sculptures; many of which are from up-and-coming artists.
Go: Behind the scenes at the V&A Storehouse
Take a cultural excursion to Stratford to the newly opened V&A Storehouse – an archive of more than half a million works in a giant architectural space – which is hot on the heels of Sadler's Wells East as part of E20's cultural explosion. Afterwards, treat yourself to a fancy dinner at Kokin at The Stratford Hotel, the new wood-fired Japanese restaurant from acclaimed chef Daisuke Shimoyama.
How to spend your weekend
Day one: morning
Let's start at the very beginning. The Tower of London takes you back to the London of William the Conqueror – it was around 1078 when he began work on a great stone palace with walls 15 feet thick. You can learn about the history, in a very entertaining way, from the Yeoman Warders (more commonly known as Beefeaters) who run tours, as well as still living within the walls of the castle. Yes, you will hear about torture, death and punishment but you can also view the British Crown Jewels and eat ice cream.
Once inside the fortress walls, it's not what you would necessarily expect – a gentile mini-village in the heart of the City that's perfect for a wander – with its own pub, village green, church and doctor. We recommend getting to the Tower for opening time and staying for a few hours, taking you to lunch. Note that if you get there ahead of the 9am opening time you may be ushered in early.

How Southend airport plane crash unfolded after aircraft explodes in fireball
An aircraft crashed 'head first into the ground' shortly after take-off from London Southend airport. Shocked witnesses saw a huge fireball erupt following the crash involving the 12-metre-long aircraft at the airport in Essex shortly before 4pm on Sunday. It is not known how many people were on the flight or if there are casualties. Zeusch Aviation, based at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands, confirmed its SUZ1 flight had been 'involved in an accident'. The plane had flown from the Greek capital Athens to Pula in Croatia on Sunday before heading to Southend. It was scheduled to return to Lelystad on Sunday night. In a post on X, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the incident as 'tragic', adding that her 'thoughts are with all those involved' and that she was 'monitoring the situation and closely receiving regular updates'. Southend Airport remains closed on Monday until further notice, a spokesperson confirmed. What we know about the plane which crashed in Southend Zeusch Aviation, based at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands, confirmed its SUZ1 flight was involved in the incident. The statement said the company was 'actively supporting the authorities with the investigation', adding: 'Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.' Flight tracking data suggests the aircraft was a Beech B200 Super King Air, a US-built twin-engine aircraft which was bound for Lelystad. Zeusch Aviation's website says the plane can be used for medical flights to transport patients or organs. It has also been deployed for aerial mapping flights. Beechcraft King Air B200 costs up to £1.47million, according to sales listings online. An advert for the aircraft says it can carry 6 passengers and two cabin crew. The length of the cabin is nearly 17ft. The aircraft cruises at about 285 miles per hour, which is around 290 knots in airspeed. How long will Southend Airport be closed for, and what flights have been cancelled? A spokesperson for Southend Airport said it will remain closed on Monday until further notice. Ten passenger flights have been cancelled so far as a result of the crash at Southend airport – all on easyJet. Sunday evening flights linking the Essex airport with Faro in Portugal and Palma de Mallorca were grounded, along with the return legs. The first three departures on Monday morning – to Malta, Palma and Pisa in Italy – were cancelled. Around 1,700 passengers are believed to have had their flights cancelled. EasyJet has confirmed that it will operate all flights originally departing from Southend via other London airports on Monday. 'We are doing all we can to help customers rearrange their plans and have contacted them directly with options to rebook or receive a refund,' the spokesperson added. 'We continue to work closely with the airport to understand when operations are able to resume.' A 'big fireball' John Johnson, who was at the airport with his children and wife, said he saw the 'big fireball' after the plane crashed. 'We all waved at the pilots, and they all waved back at us,' he said. 'The aircraft then turned 180 degrees to face its take-off, departure, powered up, rolled down the runway. 'It took off and about three or four seconds after taking off, it started to bank heavily to its left, and then within a few seconds of that happening, it more or less inverted and crashed just head first into the ground. 'Everybody was in shock in terms of witnessing it.' People inside the nearby Rochford Hundred Golf Club were evacuated. Bartender James Philpott told the BBC he felt a 'big heat wave' before looking up to a 'massive fireball' in the sky. He said: 'People were sort of running towards it to see if anyone was injured or anything.' How emergency services responded Essex Police, the East of England Ambulance Service and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service all responded to the crash. Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin said: "In these very early stages, it is vital we gather the information we need, and continue supporting the people of Essex." Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: 'We were called to an incident involving a light aircraft at Southend Airport today at 3.58pm. 'Crews from Southend (two), Rayleigh Weir and Basildon (two), along with off-road vehicles from Billericay and Chelmsford, attended. We are continuing to work at the scene with our emergency services and aviation partners.' The East of England Ambulance Service said four ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, four hazardous area response team vehicles, three senior paramedic cars and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the incident. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch confirmed it has begun an investigation into the crash. A spokesperson said: 'The AAIB has started an investigation into an accident involving an aircraft near Southend Airport which occurred yesterday afternoon. 'A multi-disciplinary team, including inspectors with expertise in aircraft operations, human factors, engineering and recorded data, arrived at the accident site yesterday afternoon. 'Enquiries are ongoing today.'

Wireless festival review – Drake's disjointed three-night headline run smacks of desperation
The announcement of Drake's three-day headline set for Wireless's 20th anniversary met with a mixed response. Having been eviscerated in a rap beef with Kendrick Lamar, he had seemingly lost all street credibility. Plus, three consecutive sets from one artist could be overkill. On the other hand, what better way could there be to mark the occasion? No artist is more emblematic of the interface between British and American music that is so central to Wireless (despite Drake being Canadian). And the triptych curation around his various artistic personae seemed like genius: the swoon-worthy Casanova, the menacing rapper, the Black diaspora-surfing chameleon (or 'culture vulture', if you're a Drake-sceptic). Friday at the festival has an R&B focus, revealing rising star Kwn and the delightfully bluesy Leon Thomas. Summer Walker is somewhat garbled and listless. And then, after collaborator PartyNextDoor bores us to death for 20 minutes, Drake arrives, throwing it back with the 2011 heartbreak classic Marvin's Room. The surprise army of R&B all-stars he brings on is incredible: Mario, Bobby Valentino, Giveon, Bryson Tiller; Lauryn Hill's appearance is astonishing, despite the glaring audio issues that occur in the transition from Nice for What into Ex-Factor. It is a clear statement of Drake's standing among the greats, an assembling of allies. Yet the set also feels disjointed and strained. After Tiller performs Exchange, Drake awkwardly asks if he'll do another song, but Tiller walks off. He also won't stop banging on about how much 'love' he receives in his 'true home', London. It soon reads like desperation, a need to affirm that he is still adored despite becoming persona non grata. Then he floats above the crowd while blaring Whitney Houston's recording of I Will Always Love You, telling everyone to embrace a stranger. He does this again on Saturday and Sunday. It is not new for his sets, but it still feels completely bizarre. The 'mandem' Saturday is more thrilling. Lancey Foux brings an enviable swagger and deft lyrical flow, and grime collective BBK are a masterclass in rap performance – Frisco a clear standout with his GBTH Freestyle. When Drake comes on, he kills the vulnerable loverboy and brings aggression – getting the audience to bark like dangerous dogs. From last night's emotional manipulation to 'I don't give a fuck if you love me' is quite the headspin, but an incredibly welcome one. The special guests are stacked: Fakemink, Dave, J Hus, Central Cee, Headie One, Skepta. But this is all a naked retaliation against the US rap scene, as he declares UK rappers superior to them (Skepta had days earlier declared war on the US with Friendly Fire). No one can think he truly believes this, and it only adds to the awkward atmosphere. When Vanessa Carlton turns up to vibe to A Thousand Miles just because Drake felt like it, all bets are off. Sign up to Sleeve Notes Get music news, bold reviews and unexpected extras. Every genre, every era, every week after newsletter promotion The organisation on Sunday gets wayward as the app mysteriously changes to remove set lengths. Drake appears on the schedule twice, at 18:25 and 20:55, and a 21:30 curfew is looming. This doesn't bode well, though the lineup is stellar. Vybz Kartel returns for his first London performance in 20 years. Despite some shakes, his rapid-fire toasting style is still serviceable, though hits such as Dancehall and Love Dem feel wasted on a crowd who don't respond with much energy. Kartel's performance runs past Drake's scheduled first set, which disappears from the lineup, and the headliner lands on stage with only 45 minutes to perform. The closing 'dance party' underwhelms as Drake aimlessly vibes out, seemingly choosing tracks on a whim. In the middle of his set, Rema comes on to perform five songs – which feels very odd given the time constraints. Without doubt this has been a history-making Wireless, but it feels as though it was laden with fan service – nostalgia and guest stars – to mask what was ultimately a bit of a heist. You'd feel less shortchanged on the final night had you attended all three days. But if you had a Sunday-only ticket, please stay on the line to your bank, your call is very important to them.
