‘BA' Review – Impressive Style Gets Lost In Clunky Narrative

The first thought that comes to mind while watching writer/director Benjamin Wong's BA is how gorgeous it looks. It is no secret that cinematographer Ming Jue Hu-famous for Laroy, Texas's stunning look-is the one behind this saturated, blue/green color palette. Add some orange hues and use anamorphic lenses to evoke a neo-noir aesthetic, and you have a sensory feast that preserves a haunting and resonant storyline.
The feature starts slow with the devoted but broke dad Daniel (Lawrence Kao), who accepts a creepy job offer to work as the Grim Reaper to better provide for his daughter Collette (Kai Cech). From the first moment, Wong makes the viewer sympathize with Daniel. He is a dancer who suffered an injury that likely contributed to the decline of his career and financial situation. But he is a dedicated father who will do anything for his daughter, so his choices, though questionable, are ones to root for.
But as the saying goes, everything comes at a price, and his nightly trips don't pay off very well. It's amusing to present a struggling, working man as a Grim Reaper instead of an overpowering, larger-than-life manifestation of limitless power and success. This adds depth to the narrative, which is weighed down by the cheesier, more endearing elements. Daniel's problems pile up, and soon he gets chased when the reality of his job clashes with his daily activities, and that leads to a strained relationship with his daughter. Then more troubles ensue.
Admittedly, BA works best during night shoots when Daniel is the Grim Reaper. The costumes, the neon lighting, and the boxes within boxes as frames within frames, work best in creating the atmospheric mood throughout the film. However, the film loses its footing when the focus shifts to real-life Daniel, and not Grim Reaper nighttime Daniel.
As complicated as that sounds, this feature works best at its darker moments. I wish I had seen more of Daniel's Grim Reaper night flights rather than his daily life, and what a good father he is. The emotional resonance of the film is great on its own, but the powerful impact of Daniel's scary night job is too cool to waste on familial dynamics and his guilty conscience.
In terms of acting, Kao is good as Daniel during his dad phase. Kudos to him for acting half of the film draped in layers of clothing. It must have been suffocating to embody Daniel with his daughter. When it's time for the Grim Reaper Daniel to be unleashed on the world, Kao struggles to create an alternate persona for that. It's not as much his problem as it is the script that lacks a poignant structural unity, nor even the perfect separation of two moody aesthetics that complement one another. Cech excels as Collette, and her storyline as the struggling daughter wondering what is wrong with her father is surprisingly more compelling than the turn of events for Daniel, probably due to the fact that the stunning poster (designed by Drew Struzan) and the high expectations whoever saw it placed on the film.
What I would've also wanted to see more of is Daniel's feelings and physicality as the Grim Reaper. What his new night obligations do to his body, his soul, and his interactions with the people around him. This could have elevated this film to a suspenseful, blood-pumping thriller with a touch of drama, rather than merely a family drama with scant elements of the supernatural and fantasy sprinkled in between.
BA is a twist on the horror-drama genre. It lacks the needed cruelty, but aesthetically it's perfect nonetheless. It has its moments, but generally, the drastic shifts in tone take away from its power.

Why sports dominate the media industry & what's next in 2026

Paramount (PARA) stock is in focus after the company announced a $7.7 billion deal with TKO Group (TKO) to secure UFC streaming rights. PwC Global entertainment and media leader Bart Spiegel sits down with Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter Allie Canal to discuss why live sports have been a huge focus for media companies. He also discusses what's next in entertainment, including video games and potential deals in the making. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Asking for a Trend. About a year ago after Netflix announced they were be going to be rolling out NFL games on Christmas day, I spoke with the NFL and they told me they don't want to just be on cable or just on streaming, they want to be everywhere. And it feels like that power then is firmly with these leagues. Yeah, the leagues have a lot of power at this time. They're content creators, right? And so anyone that owns content, owns IP, we always say content is king, right? And it's no different with these leagues that are creating this content and putting out there and striking really creative deals as well, um, to ensure that their property, their IP continues to be popular in perpetuity. That's a great way to think about it, right? They, that is their IP. If we look beyond sports, what's the next content category or experience that you think will create that sticky moment for consumers? Yeah, so it's interesting. 2026 should be a really big year for video games. We really believe that, um, you've got the e-sports Olympics in 2026, you have the, you know, a really prominent title expected to be released in 2026. And you know, video games just just helps the whole sector in general, right? They come up with original IP that is then marketed for, you know, TV and movies that you see being played out. You also see video games, um, utilizing a lot of their technology and infrastructure to help in in in film, special effects, TV, etc. So we see a really big year for video games in 2026 and our forecasts show that. We also see, don't sleep on live experiences either. Because I think live experiences are extremely important. Um, you'd have, you know, that's where a lot of money that's going for the 18 to 25 really sought after demographic, that's where they're spending their time and energy because it plays into the whole social media platform as well as well because now they can go do these live experiences and post it to social media for their friends, their followers, etc. And that's really attractive to them and really compelling to them. So I think live experiences are going to continue to be extremely popular. We have it, you know, the spend on live experiences still exceeds the spend on digital experiences and we expect it to continue. And to that point, live nation earnings, they've been crushing and a big part of that is people are going and traveling to see a lot of concerts. So that's a great point. When we look ahead to MNA, it was a bit stagnant in the entertainment space. We saw a bit of activity. We finally got that Paramount Skydance deal going through. What are you watching for when it comes to upcoming deals? Do you expect the end of this year and into 2026 to be a lot more active than what we've seen? I definitely do. There have been a lot of announced spins, separations, things like that. And I think when you look at the OTT streaming environment, it's really kind of happened in a bunch of different chapters. With the first chapter really being focused on, okay, we have, let's just throw money at content, throw money, get to get people and subscribers onto the platform. Then the second chapter was really, let's take a step back, focus on ROI, focus on really making sure that we've got a profitable business. And now I think you're going to look at chapter three, which is what you're seeing happening right now, real time, some of the things that you mentioned, which is, okay, what are some creative partnerships, joint ventures, MNA, where there's going to be some level of consolidation in the in the ecosystem? Because we've done studies ourselves where the average consumer doesn't want to pay for 10 subscription services. They want three to five subscription services. And so, you know, this allows them to consolidate, you know, take advantage of economies of scale, and that's what I think we're going to see in the next year. But then going out from there, I think then it's all about what other things can you bring to your platform? Video games, social media, user generated content, and that again will just apply just continue to apply that stickiness factor where people are willing to pay more and and limit the churn that you have on your on your platform. Whitney Houston Foundation Auctions 24-plus Items

Fashion was a priority for some of the Whitney Houston fans who bid Monday in a sale of the late six-time Grammy winner's memorabilia that was organized by Julien's Auctions. Held live at The Peninsula Beverly Hills and online, the 'Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation Auction' featured more than 24 apparel pieces and memorabilia. It benefited the musician's namesake foundation that helps provide college scholarships and services to young people who are interested in the arts. Forty years after Houston first ventured into the music industry, a few devotees picked up items that Houston wore on stage to perform including ensembles by Marc Bouwer and stilettos from Dolce & Gabbana among other keepsakes. Saturday would have been the late Grammy Hall of Fame inductee's 65th birthday. She died in 2012 in Los Angeles. Interestingly, the top-selling item was a 1994 personalized FIFA World Cup Event worn jersey with a photo that sold for $22,400 — well above the pre-auction estimate of $1,000 to $2,000. An embellished catsuit designed by Bouwer that Houston wore for a Madison Square Garden performance during her 1991 'I'm Your Baby Tonight' tour fetched $22,400, outperforming the pre-sale estimate of $4,000 to $6,000. Another one of his designs, a velour suit that the musician performed at a 'Welcome Home Heroes' concert that same year sold for $16,000 — more than five times the pre-sale opening estimate. An embellished ensemble that Bouwer created for 'The Bodyguard' world tour went for $10,240, up from its opening estimate of $3,000 to $5,000. A replica gown of the one that Bouwer designed for Houston to wear for a South Africa concert in 1994 sold for $6,400. Bouwer told WWD Monday, 'In a time when stylists, collectors, investors and museum historians are universally looking for archival fashion, it's flattering to see these pieces do so well. It proves the impact and worth of designer and celebrity relationships. I think Whitney would be delighted that the high returns are going to her foundation for the benefit of youth and music in education.' A pair of pale yellow pumps with floral embellishment from Dolce & Gabbana had a final bid of $3,200. A belted yellow dress that Houston sported to wear on 'Dancing With the Stars' in 2009 raked in $12,800 compared to the opening estimate of $800 to $1,200. A Dolce & Gabbana ensemble that Houston donned for the Clive Davis' Grammy party in 2009 had a final offer of $11,520. Another high-ticket item was a Helen Yarmark fur coat at $12,800 that Houston chose for a 2010 outing. The sale was 'a powerful reminder that the spirit of Whitney continues to move music, inspire generations, and define celebrity,' according to Julien's executive director and cofounder Martin J. Nolan Having released seven career albums and sold more than 220 million music recordings, Houston also appeared in 'The Bodyguard' in 1992, 'Waiting to Exhale' in 1995, 'The Preacher's Wife' in 1996, 'Cinderella' in 1997 and 'Sparkle.' 'The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album' from 1992 remains the bestselling soundtrack album of all time, the bestselling album by a woman in music history, and the bestselling album of the 1990s. Houston received more than 400 awards and she was the executive producer of 'Cinderella' and 'Sparkle,' and produced 'The Princess Diaries,' 'The Princess Diaries 2,' 'The Cheetah Girls' and 'The Cheetah Girls 2.' In June, Houston's estate received 11 new certifications by the Recording Industry Association of America that were posthumously presented in her honor. Houston is the first African American artist to have three RIAA Diamond-certified albums — 10x Platinum — including her self-titled debut album, her second studio album, 'Whitney,' and 'The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album.' Concert goers took note — Houston's RIAA 'Multi-Platinum' sales award for 'The Bodyguard' was auctioned for $16,000 — eight times its pre-sale opening estimate. The 50-year-old former TV personality has started to share more about her life as a nurse and dog mom on the appNEED TO KNOW Alexis Gosselin, the 21-year-old former star of Jon & Kate Plus 8, made a rare appearance in a video with her mom Kate on Aug. 9 Kate, 50, started posting to TikTok in July, sharing updates from her life as a nurse and dog mom The mom of eight recently celebrated her sextuplet's 21st birthday in May, posting a photo clinking glasses with kids Alexis, Aaden, Leah and JoelKate Gosselin is showing love for her daughter Alexis. Several weeks after the 50-year-old former TV personality opened her TikTok account, she shared a video packing her lunch for a work shift — which included a brief appearance by her 21-year-old daughter Alexis. In the clip, which Kate posted on Aug. 9, she is preparing a salad while Alexis walks through the kitchen on her way out of the house. 'Ride carefully, and text me when you get there, please,' the mom of eight tells her daughter, to which Alexis replies, 'Love you!' Alexis, the first of Kate's sextuplets to be born, has lived a fairly private life in the years following the end of her family's TV show. Kate's video was the latest in a series of clips she has been sharing to TikTok over the last few weeks after she first started her account in July. 'There's going to be a lot of dogs on it — and kids — but mostly dogs,' shared the Jon & Kate Plus 8 star about her new social media page in a video on July 28. 'I'm in my German Shepherd dog mom era. Is that how they say it? You know what I mean.' Kate shares eight children — 24-year-old twins Mady and Cara, as well as 21-year-old sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah and Joel — with ex-husband Jon Gosselin. The family skyrocketed into fame as the stars of TLC's Jon & Kate Plus 8, which was later named Kate Plus 8 after Kate filed for divorce from Jon in 2009. After Kate and Jon's divorce, their children Collin and Hannah chose to live with their father, while the rest remained with their mother. In May, to celebrate her sextuplets' 21st birthday, Kate shared a photo clinking glasses with Alexis, Aaden, Leah and Joel, while Collin and Hannah were notably absent. On the same day, Jon shared a video celebrating Hannah's birthday over cocktails with his daughter and his girlfriend Stephanie Lebo. In an Aug. 7 TikTok post on his own account, which he recently started, Collin opened up about his estrangement from his family in the years since their family's show concluded. "Born to be a team, us against the world," shared Collin in the post, which was set to Adele's track 'Hometown Glory.' 'Forced to do it alone, and wonder every day what our lives could've looked like.' 'Forced apart, pitted against each other,' added Collin in the caption, referencing his siblings. 'All the fame and money in the world, but what about kids being kids? I will always love them more than anything. The tears I shed behind closed doors, thinking about the memories we could've shared. I love you guys… ❤️' Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. In a September 2024 interview with The Sun, Collin alleged that his mom confined him and 'isolated' him from his other seven siblings, adding that he was often the 'scapegoat' for his mother's problems. "My mother had a room built in our unfinished section of the storage basement," he alleged to the outlet. "She had a room put up with cameras in it, a tiny window in the corner and it was bolt-locked from the outside. It was like a containment room, literally, and it had a mattress on the floor and that's how I lived." Speaking to The Sun at the time, an attorney for Kate said he didn't believe that Kate had done anything to "intentionally harm" her son and that "she did what she did to protect herself and her family" from what he called "troubled behavior." In 2020, Collin also accused Jon of abuse, alleging that his father punched and kicked him. Jon was never charged with abuse, and in a statement to Entertainment Tonight, he denied the allegations.
