Oklahoma Sooners defensive end named to Lombardi Award watch list

USA Todaya day ago
Oklahoma Sooners star defensive end R Mason Thomas was named to the Bednarik Award watch list on Monday, placing him among some of the best defensive players in all of college football. On Tuesday, he went two-for-two this week on watch list appearances.
Thomas made the cut for the Lombardi Award watch list. This accolade "continues to honor the Outstanding College Football Lineman, whether on offense or defense, who displays exceptional performance and ability and embodies the character and discipline that Vince Lombardi championed throughout his life," according to the award's website.
Three former Sooners have taken home the Lombardi Award, beginning with Lee Roy Selmon is 1975. Tony Casillas followed in 1985, and Tommie Harris is the most recent recipient, winning in 2003.
Thomas enjoyed a breakout season in 2024 and returned for a final year in 2025. He'll look to build off of a season where he had nine sacks and led the Sooners in pressures. He was also named to the 2025 All-SEC preseason second-team back in July.

Cubs calling up top prospect Owen Caissie in huge move

The Cubs are making a splash. Chicago is calling up outfield prospect Owen Caissie from Triple-A Iowa, ESPN reported Wednesday night. The expectation is that Caissie, an Ontario, Canada native, will join the team for its series final against the Blue Jays. Brett Davis-Imagn Images The 23-year-old Caissie — the top Cubs prospect and No. 45 overall on MLB Pipeline — is in the middle of a fantastic season in the minor leagues. In his second full season in Triple-A, he's hit .289/.389/.566 with a career-high 22 home runs. Advertisement Across 499 games in the minors, he has totaled 81 home runs with an .873 OPS. He's always had plenty of swing-and-miss in his game, though, this year included, with a 28 percent punchout rate. The move comes amid a complete upheaval in the standings over the last month, which has seen the Cubs go from one game up in the National League Central on July 19 to 7 1/2 games back of the Brewers as Milwaukee rides a 12-game winning streak. Chicago does sit 4 games up in the NL wild-card race despite the recent stretch, however. Over the last two weeks, Chicago's offense has completely sputtered, coming into Wednesday night's 4-1 win over the Blue Jays with a .230 average and a .644 OPS over the last 14 days. 'It's swollen up pretty good already,' Counsell told reporters after the game. 'It's an IL [trip]. It's bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him.'

Aaron Boone's team wasted an opportunity to gain ground on several contenders in the American League playoff chase, getting shut down by All-Star righty Joe Ryan and two relievers in a 4-1 loss Wednesday to deadline-gutted Minnesota at the Stadium after taking the first two games of the series. Robert Sabo / New York Post With their first loss to the Twins in their past 10 head-to-head meetings, the Yanks (64-57) slipped 1 ¹/₂ games behind Boston for the second AL wild-card position and remained one game ahead of Cleveland for the final playoff spot. Advertisement The Yankees, who will open a five-game road trip Friday in St. Louis, still own an overall winning percentage of .735 (125-45) against the Twins since 2002. Rookie righty Cam Schlittler completed at least five innings for the fifth time in six major league starts, allowing one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts before manager Aaron Boone replaced him in a 1-1 game with Yerry De los Santos — after 86 pitches — to start the sixth. De los Santos faced three batters and gave up three hits, with all three runners scoring in the inning. The 24-year-old Schlittler retired the first nine batters he faced on just 34 pitches through three innings, including three consecutive strikeouts bridging the latter two frames. Giancarlo Stanton, who started his third straight game in right field, nearly took Ryan deep in the first on a scorched ball that was hauled in at the center field wall by Byron Buxton. Ohio State football black stripe alert: Defensive end becomes part of the 'brotherhood'

We're just a little over two weeks before the start of the Ohio State football season, and that means there's still time for some black stripes to be shed. Sure enough, we had a couple of those occur on Wednesday, when two incoming transfers became official members of the brotherhood by shedding their black stripes. One of those was North Carolina defensive end transfer Beau Atkinson. He was a force coming off the edge for the Tar Heels last year and should be counted on heavily in the rotation at defensive end for an OSU team looking to replace some key starters off the defensive line from last season -- one that was a key group that helped lead the Buckeyes to a College Football Playoff national championship. "Appreciate y'all welcoming me in the last couple of months. Shoutout rushmen, shoutout coach J (Larry Johnson), all the boys. Let's keep working," Atkinson said in a short ceremony. "Go Bucks!" We'll continue to keep an eye on any more black stripes that go into the garbage can as we make our way through the last couple of weeks of fall camp and on towards the titanic clash with No. 1 Texas on Aug. 30.
