Already used to pressure, Gavin McKenna is prepared for Memorial Cup spotlight
After all, the 17-year-old phenom is no stranger to wall-to-wall media coverage and sky-high expectations.
'My whole life has kind of prepared me for this,' he said in a phone interview. 'Growing up, I've kind of dealt with it, so it's nothing new to me.'
McKenna led the Medicine Hat Tigers to the Western Hockey League title and will be the main attraction of a star-studded event when competition for Canadian junior hockey's top prize begins Friday in Rimouski, Que.

The tournament will put a cap on a sensational year for the gifted six-foot, 165-pound winger from Whitehorse.

Widely projected as the top pick in the 2026 NHL draft, McKenna flashed his dynamic playmaking and piled up 38 points in 16 playoff games after a highlight-filled regular season of 129 points in 56 contests.
His dominant campaign included a 54-game point streak from Nov. 2 to May 11, the Canadian Hockey League's longest since 2000.

And although Canada suffered a disappointing quarterfinal exit, McKenna also headlined the country's roster at the world junior hockey championship in Ottawa earlier this year.
'I've been on big stages before and I've played with lots of pressure,' he said. 'The whole year there's kind of been a spotlight on me, so it's nothing I'm not used to.
'It's just some more hockey games, is the way I'm looking at it.'

Tigers head coach Willie Desjardins has watched a circus follow his young star all season.
'It's probably a little bit unfair for anybody at his age. It has been, even now. He gets an awful lot of attention,' Desjardins said. 'He likes focusing on hockey. That's what he wants to do, so I think that'll be a little bit of a challenge for him.
'It's part of the job, it's part of what you're going to get into in pro, and this is being ushered in and learning to become a pro.'

Growing up, McKenna always played with older teammates and quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in Whitehorse.
At 14, he became the first Yukon-born player drafted first overall to the WHL in 2022.
McKenna produced four points in his Tigers debut and hasn't slowed down since.
'I was hoping he could maybe play second power play,' Desjardins said, underestimating the youngster when he first joined the group. 'I think he led us in scoring for the last little bit.
'Right from the start, he's been a big part of our team.'

McKenna missed Games 3 and 4 of the WHL final with an undisclosed injury before returning for Medicine Hat's championship-clinching Game 5 win over the Spokane Chiefs last Friday.
After a few days of rest, he's 'feeling good and ready to go' for his opening game against the host Rimouski Oceanic on Friday night at Coliseum Sun Life Financial.
The Moncton Wildcats, who won the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, and the Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights round out the tournament, which runs through the final on June 1.
Moncton's Gardiner MacDougall coached McKenna at last year's under-18 world championships, calling him 'the best player in the tournament.'

'His third period, I couldn't get him on the ice enough,' MacDougall said after McKenna scored a hat trick in Canada's 6-4 gold-medal win over the United States.
Now MacDougall will try to stop McKenna, along with a London team loaded with NHL prospects and a Rimouski squad that pushed the Wildcats to six games in the QMJHL final.
The same teams filled out the top four in the CHL's end-of-season rankings.
'It's a spectacular field,' MacDougall said. 'It's going to be a hockey fan's delight … spectacular for the fan, for the hockey scout, for all the hockey people from the National Hockey League that come to see these games.
'Going to be spectacular for the players – and going to be a nightmare for the coaches.
'How do you eat an elephant? These are big monster teams, and it's one bite at a time.'
While much of the focus will be on McKenna, he's quick to highlight his teammates.
He began rattling off some other names to watch — forward Cayden Lindstrom, captain Oasiz Wiesblatt, defenceman Tanner Molendyk.

'I could honestly go through the whole lineup,' McKenna said. 'I think that's the reason why we're here.
'You don't come here with a one-man team.'

Veteran quarterbacks Collaros, Adams poised to return to their respective teams
The Calgary Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers should have their offensive leaders back when they square off Saturday night at McMahon Stadium. Calgary starter Vernon Adams Jr. (head) was a full participant in practice Tuesday after missing the Stampeders' 31-11 loss to Ottawa last week. Ditto for veteran Bombers quarterback Zack Collaros (neck) after Chris Streveler got the start in Winnipeg's 40-31 win over Toronto on Friday night. This will mark the third meeting of the season between the West Division rivals, with Calgary (5-3) having won the previous two contests. The Stampeders are looking for their first series sweep of the Blue Bombers (4-3) since 2016. Calgary is also chasing its first victory in three games after consecutive losses to Montreal and Ottawa. Canadian receiver Clark Barnes (ankle) was a full participant in practice for the Stamps and could be available but Damien Alford (hamstring) was limited. Calgary has been solid 3-0 within its division while Winnipeg is 3-2. But since 2022 the Bombers are 7-3 versus the Stampeders, with Collaros sporting a 10-8 career record against them. What's more, veteran offensive lineman Stanley Bryant (ankle) was a full participant in practice Tuesday for the Bombers. Calgary will also have to be wary of Bombers returner Trey Vaval, who last week became the first Winnipeg player to return a punt and kickoff for touchdowns in the same game. Also, defensive lineman Willie Jefferson had four pass knockdowns, one short of the league record, and has 85 overall, good for third in CFL history behind Adrion Smith (90) and Eddie Davis (111). Last week's win halted a three-game losing streak for Winnipeg. Calgary's defence has been solid, having allowed just 18.8 offensive points per game and 11 offensive touchdowns — both league lows. Stampeders receiver Dominique Rhymes has scored touchdowns in each of his past three games. Facing Winnipeg has agreed with Adams Jr., who has thrown for 489 yards and five touchdowns in the previous two matchups. Adams Jr. has a career 6-3 record against the Bombers. Pick: Calgary. — B.C. Lions versus Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Thursday night) At Hamilton, the Ticats (6-2) chase a seventh straight victory and second in as many meetings with B.C. (3-5). CFL passing leader Bo Levi Mitchell had 389 yards passing with three TDs in a 37-33 win over the Lions at B.C. Place Stadium on July 27. Kiondre Smith had 14 receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns in that contest. Lions running back James Butler ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns against his former team and comes in as the CFL's leading rusher with 619 yards (5.5-yard average) and five touchdowns. The Lions average a league-best 5.7 yards per rush while the Ticats allow a CFL-high 5.4 yards per carry. B.C. also comes off the bye week — its last contest being the loss to the Ticats — and has won its last two games in Hamilton. Pick: B.C. — Edmonton Elks versus Montreal Alouettes (Friday night) At Montreal, McLeod Bethel-Thompson of the Alouettes (6-2) and Cody Fajardo of Edmonton (1-6) face their former teams for the first time since being dealt for each other this winter. Bethel-Thompson is 1-2 versus Edmonton but Tyler Snead had 14 catches for 191 yards in his last two games for the Alouettes. Fajardo, who led the Als to the '23 Grey Cup, is 4-1 all-time versus the East Division squad. In his two starts this season, Fajardo has completed 79.3 per cent of his passes for 603 yards with three TDs and an interception. At Toronto, the Argos (2-6) look to continue their mastery of the Redblacks (2-6), having won 19 of the previous 25 matchups since Ottawa entered the CFL in 2014. Luke Keaschall drives in three runs as Twins beat Tigers 9-4
DETROIT (AP) — Luke Keaschall drove in three runs for the second straight game and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 9-4 on Wednesday. Keaschell is hitting .393 in his nine-game major league career, which was interrupted in April by a broken arm. He returned on Tuesday and has four hits and six RBIs in his first two games back. Thomas Hatch (1-0) picked up the win with 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He was claimed off waivers on Monday from the Kansas City Royals. Jack Flaherty (6-11) took the loss, giving up six runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the first. Alan Roden and Matt Wallner started the game with singles, and Keaschall drove them in with a two-out double. Keaschall had three RBIs in Tuesday's 6-3 win, including his first career homer.
