Sulphur's culture, identity on display in ‘Daddy War Bucks'

Twenty-year-old Jake Abraham has entered the film festival circuit with his 19-minute short film 'Daddy War Bucks.'
It's an actor-driven chamber piece designed to hold attention through performance and script rather than spectacle, Abraham said.
Set in Sulphur 1951, the film follows two mortgage bankers embroiled in a 'scheme' to repossess an elderly man's home. One is the boss. The other is his conflicted subordinate. As the film unfolds — through charged dialogue and quietly escalating stakes — something darker bubbles beneath the surface.
'Daddy War Bucks,' filmed in 2024, is Abraham's second short film.
He grew up in Allen, Texas. Though he has no formal film training or education, he jumped into the film industry a few months after graduating high school with his 2022 short film, 'Best Played Loud' — an exploration into the 1960s musical transition from folk music into rock and roll.
His tangible experience extends to his work on the set of bigger productions, like the CW series 'Walker.' But he has been making videos since his middle and high school years. He and his friends would spend their time creating videos for YouTube, but he realized filmmaking was his passion when the hobby became a priority.
'All you need is a camera and a couple of people to help you out, and you can really make whatever you want. And at the beginning, they were, you know, of course, really bad and very amateurish,' he recalled. 'We wouldn't get something right, we wouldn't get something done, and everybody would say, 'Oh, well, that's OK.' And then I remember thinking to myself, 'I want to get this done. Like, I really care about what this thing is going to look like'.And that was something that kind of revealed itself to me, that I wanted to take it more seriously and pursue it in a more formal manner.'
Now he runs his production company, Mausoleum Films.
He and a crew of about 25 filmed 'Daddy War Bucks' in Texas last year, but the film is set in Southwest Louisiana. Most of his father's family is from the Sulphur area. Abraham wanted to honor an area with personal meaning to him.
'I think the whole state of Louisiana is extremely fascinating, and we go frequently. And I just love the culture and the identity that it has. And I wanted to explore it through the lens of a period piece,' he said 'It's set right after the Second World War and is about a group of disillusioned individuals in the workforce. And it kind of reveals itself to be a family story by the end of it. In that way, it becomes really kind of personal.'
It's no easy task to tell a complete story — one with a beginning, middle and end — in under 20 minutes, Abraham said. It's even harder to craft a short, complete story that emotionally involves the audience, but that it was he worked to achieve with 'Daddy War Bucks.'
'I didn't try to just make it, you know, a moment.I tried to make characters and a story that you could follow and invest yourself in and leave you with something to think about when it was over.'
Abraham is personally inspired by directors like Ingmar Berman, Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson. But, the first step in becoming a filmmaker is to 'find what you like to make and stick with it.'
The next step is to not rush the filmmaking process.
'It's easy to get lost in certain aspects or forego certain aspects … and I find oftentimes that if I'm going to see it on screen, or hear it on screen, I want the most detail and attention paid to that thing. Because that's what's going to make the film resonate. That's, that's what's going to keep it on film forever, essentially.'
Abraham plans to produce a feature-length film after getting a few more short films under his belt. And while 'Daddy War Bucks' isn't available for streaming yet, it will be screened at film festivals this year.

Couple sells $1K tickets to wedding — and hundreds of guests pay up

When it came to 'for richer or poorer,' Marley Jaxx and Steve Larsen definitely chose the former. Ahead of saying 'I Do' on Aug. 1, the Idaho-based digital entrepreneurs sold $1,000 tickets to their $50,000 wedding-weekend extravaganza, making room for a whopping 270 guests — most of them strangers from the internet. But turning their holy matrimony into a money-making display wasn't just about pocketing a tidy profit, the happy honeys insisted. Advertisement 6 Jaxx and Larsen raked in over $96,000 at their wedding and an additional $36,000 at their post-nuptials brunch, totaling around $132,000 in charitable funds. Courtesy Don & Emily Mamone Instead, it was an effort toward 'disrupting' the multi-billion-dollar wedding industry — and making the world a better place. 'We broke even and raised $132,000 for charity,' Jaxx, 34, told The Post — explaining that she'd first casually pitched the idea of selling tickets to her wedding as a joke to her 21,000 Instagram followers. Advertisement Now, she's laughing all the way to the bank. 'Weddings are so expensive, and selling tickets to one is disruptive,' continued Jaxx, who, alongside her new hubby, donated the excess funds from their wedding to Village Impact, an organization dedicated to building schools in Africa. 'We wanted to [sell tickets] from a place of heart and purpose,' added the millennial, 'not scammy.' 6 The newlyweds tell The Post it was important that they recover their wedding costs and raise money for a worthy cause. Courtesy Don & Emily Mamone Advertisement While planning their unusual fête in their hometown of Boise, she and Larsen, 37, were sticker-shocked by the 'crazy' costs, such as a $650 'cake-cutting' fee, at local wedding venues. So, rather than blowing the budget, the social media-savvy sweethearts invited their combined 192,000 Instagram and YouTube followers to pay for an in-person seat at their not-so-exclusive soirée. Roughly 30 high-rollers purchased $997 'VIP' vouchers — which Jaxx and Larsen ultimately rounded up to $1,000 — for their marriage celebration marathon. 6 Jaxx and Larsen say they were shocked by how many strangers purchased tickets to their wedding and donated to Village Impact. Courtesy Don & Emily Mamone Advertisement Besides the usual rehearsal dinner, wedding and reception, the pretty penny permitted deep-pocketed participants to partake in a range of unusual offerings — from romance counseling sessions led by experts to a Saturday morning 'Biohacking Brunch.' There, party-exhausted attendees enjoyed red-light therapy care, breath work tutorials and a $20,000 bio-charger energy rehabilitation. 'Our social media audiences actually came up with the $1,000 price point,' said Larsen with a laugh. 'We asked them what they'd expect to pay for [these special experiences] and they said, 'A grand!'' 6 The Idaho sweeties were committed to offering their loved ones, as well as ticketed guests, memorable experiences and entertainment during their posh wedding weekend party. Courtesy Don & Emily Mamone The pair's family and friends were granted full, VIP-level access to their three-day fête. More budget-minded fans from cyberspace were given the option of paying either $57 for admission to the Friday afternoon ceremony and reception, or $97 to attend both the Thursday night rehearsal dinner as well as the wedding. Approximately 100 guests opted for those options. 6 Jaxx says baker Michelle Sohan offered to make the wedding cake after learning their ticketed wedding on social media. Courtesy Don & Emily Mamone Advertisement But not everyone saw the value in the duo's funky fundraiser. Virtual vultures pecked mercilessly at Jaxx and Larsen for the uncommon move — accusing the twosome of making a 'mockery' of marriage, and labeling them 'nuts.' However, charging a cover at the wedding chapel doors is trending as a unique way to save a few bucks on the big day, which can run lovebirds over $26,000. Nova and Reemo Styles, of the Bronx, hawked tickets to their swank union at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Advertisement 6 Larsen and Jaxx are looking forward to traveling to Kenya and building classrooms with the more than $132,000 they raised at their wedding. Courtesy Don & Emily Mamone The New York newlyweds previously told The Post that charging $333 per person kept their costs low and bank accounts stacked high. Meanwhile, Jaxx and Larsen said they were thrilled to have also recovered the expenses they laid out for their splashy to-do — topped off with live performances by dancing trombonist Jonathan Arons, music from Team Ragoza and DJ Dynamix, and sweets from Stella's Ice Cream, confectioner Michelle Sohan and Mama's Secrets cookies. Advertisement But the darlings are even more excited for a July 2026 trip to Kenya, where they'll erect classrooms for kids in need — with the monies raised from their wedding. 'It costs $15,000 to build a classroom with Village Impact,' said Jaxx. 'We went with them to Africa two years ago and it was the most beautiful, life-changing experience.' 'As we shared that at our wedding reception, several people donated the full $15,000,' she said. 'I had people approach me saying, 'I have no idea who you are, but I'm at your wedding and it's awesome.'' 'They came to the wedding as strangers, left as friends and now we're all going on this life-changing trip to Africa next year.' Advertisement The helpful funds notwithstanding, Larsen says selling tickets to their special occasion also helped him and Jaxx weed out their true supporters from the phony clout-chasers on their guest list. 'When someone chooses to purchase a ticket to a wedding, they are saying 'Yes,' but it's not out of obligation,' he noted. 'Everyone who was there wanted to be there.'

At the same time, La Liga has confirmed Disney+'s UK and Ireland service has secured rights to the competition for the next three years. The podcast deal, which Lineker's Goalhanger Films struck with La Liga, is also for three years, and will see the launch of a video-first podcast titled The Rest is Football: LaLiga, which former BBC Sports presenter Lineker will host alongside Alex Aljoe. It will be available of YouTube and Spotify in the UK and Ireland, featuring clips from every la Liga game along with expert analysis and discussion. Lineker, who is set to front ITV reality show The Box, turned out for Barca during his playing career in the 1980s. 'I've made no secret of my love for Spanish football over the years,' said Lineker, who is Goalhanger's co-founder. 'Ever since I played there in the late '80s, I've followed the story of La Liga closely. Now, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marcus Rashford joining Jude Bellingham and Conor Gallagher in Spain, all eyes will be on La Liga's biggest games each week. The Rest Is Football: LaLiga will be the perfect way to catch all the goals and key action.' Goalhanger's other co-founder, Tony Pastor, noted that downloads of The Rest is Football spiked to 19.6 million and streams in June 2024 during the last men's UEFA European Championship, which saw Spain defeat England 2-1 in the final. In particular, YouTube viewing was well up, with 'more than half' of the downloads made thrre. 'Bringing weekly match action to The Rest Is Football feels like the natural next step for the show. Podcasting is no longer just an audio medium – video is transforming how people engage with our content and bringing in entirely new audiences,' said Pastor. The Rest Is Football: LaLiga launches on August 19 and will releases weekly episodes, with the video stream limited to the UK and Ireland. Disney+ deal The news came on the same day Disney+ confirmed it had secured a three-year deal, beginning on August 16, that will give subscribers access to live Saturday night La Liga soccer games. This will kick off with Valencia CF hostingReal Sociedad at the Mestalla Stadium from 8:30pm UK local time. Disney-owned ESPN will provide the production and commentary. Real Madrid and Liverpool legend Steve 'Macca' McManaman will lead the commentary team alongside former Arsenal and West Ham midfielder Stewart Robson. Broadcasters Ian Darke and Rob Palmer will alternate play-by-play duties throughout the season. The deal also sees and ESPN UK's social channels and YouTube offering highlights of every La Liga game and news on developments in Spain. It comes soon after Disney+ secured exclusive rights to the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe for the next five years. Most La Liga games will still play on Premier Sports in the UK and Ireland. The sports broadcaster and streaming service today secure a new three-year deal for all games outside of the Saturday 8pm slot. This gives it more than 340 games in total. 'At Disney, we celebrate storytelling that moves and excites,' said Karl Holmes, Disney+ EMEA's General Manager. 'From the cinematic scale of FX's Alien: Earth to the sharp wit of Only Murders in the Building and the action-packed suspense of Lucasfilm's Andor, our customers know they're in for something special. With La Liga joining the line-up, they can experience that same excitement on the pitch with weekly matches featuring legendary clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona and stars like Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold as part of their Disney+ subscription.' Former Sky finance chief Holmes recently took up his post at Disney+. He'll soon be joined by long-serving ITV exec Angela Jain, who was named Head of Content for EMEA in June. Disney+'s move is the latest example of a streaming service acquiring sports rights as a means to attract new subs in the competitive UK market. For example, Prime Video has in recent seasons dipped into the market for Premier League and Champions League games. La Liga President Javier Tebas said: 'Today begins a new era in La Liga's broadcast distribution in the UK and Ireland.
