St. James-Smithtown captures New York State Little League title

New York Post26-07-2025
Call it an Empire State of Mind.
St. James-Smithtown Little League is on top of the world as the 12-year-olds brought home the New York State title and are just a few wins away from Williamsport.

'It feels great — making history with everybody that I've been teammates with for four years straight, we've been working as hard as we can,' outfielder Eric Hanson told The Post of the program's first boys New York championship.
The group won it all with a mighty 7-2 performance over Staten Island's South Shore Little League, a team that St. James-Smithtown lost to, 8-2, in pool play.
Down 2-0 early and struggling with off-speed pitching in Friday morning's all-or-nothing game, the squad took a beat to rethink strategy, manager Scott Santelli said.

'We basically said, 'Hey, guys, we've got to start looking curveball, not fastball,' ' he said. 'It's the opposite of what you teach.'
Santelli's son, left fielder James, recalled that their team had its back to the wall in an earlier do-or-die district tournament against West Sayville, which St. James-Smithtown came back to win.
'We've rallied before,' he said, 'so I knew that we could do it again.'
Pitcher and New York State home run derby champion Jeremy Katz got his team emotionally back in it by blasting a solo home run in the second inning, cutting South Shore's lead to 2-1.

Then, it was all Long Island in inning four as St. James-Smithtown blew the game open with a six-run frame during which Katz blasted another two-run homer.
'Jeremy comes up, hits a second home run of the game, the whole crowd's going crazy,' recalled Hanson. 'We were hyping everybody up in the stands. … It felt like a home game for us.'
St. James-Smithtown moves on to the Little League Metro regional tournament, where it will face the best clubs from New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, starting with the latter on Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.

The tournament winner advances to the big show, the Little League World Series in August.
'When I was younger, I always used to watch them on ESPN — and now I'm going to be on there. It's the achievement of a lifetime,' Santelli said.
'I really think we have a chance.'

St. James-Smithtown Little League cruises by Connecticut to move win away from World Series dream

Call it Bulls on parade. St. James-Smithtown Little League is stampeding into an all-or-nothing game that would put them in the Little League World Series this Friday at 7 p.m. 'Not in a million years did I see this coming,' Bulls manager Scott Santelli told The Post after a 6-1 win over Connecticut's Fairfield International Little League, which advanced the Long Island 12-year-olds into the Metro region final in Bristol, Conn. Advertisement 'Last year, we lost in the first game of our district tournament. … I came into this season only thinking about making it past that, and since then, it's all been gravy.' 6 St James Smithtown celebrates the win over Fairfield during the East Regional Little Tournament game, Fairfield vs St Jamestown, on Monday August 4, 2025, Little League Eastern Region Complex in Bristol. Hearst Connecticut Media Santelli dashed to the outfield following the final out on Monday and joined the Long Island boys leaping up and down to celebrate what has been the two towns' most successful season on record. Advertisement 'It was just a ball of energy in my stomach I had to get out,' added the skipper, whose team remains undefeated in the Metro games. 'I don't know what the heck I said — I don't think they knew what I was saying either,' Santelli said. The jumping for joy — and pool party that immediately followed — was not without warrant as the Bulls put up another lights-out performance on ESPN. 6 St James Smithtown starting pitcher Ryan Delgado (27) during the East Regional Little Tournament game, Fairfield vs St Jamestown, on Monday. Hearst Connecticut Media Advertisement Like he does while playing poker with his pals on the roster, Ryan Delgado was absolutely dealing on the mound with five crucial strikeouts that helped the Bulls stay in front for the first 3 ²/₃ innings. 'Last night, I just went with my gut by making him the starter,' Santelli said. 'He's a bulldog, he's just a pure athlete. He's just got that competitiveness.' The starting pitcher also swung a big bat that collected two vital insurance runs that came by way of an RBI single in the third and then another in the fifth inning against Fairfield. 'I've been seeing the ball really well. My swing is level. Things are great,' Delgado said. Hearst Connecticut Media Lucas Kostas continued to shine this tournament with an RBI double in the second inning as well. It was the third baseman's fourth hit and fifth run he's driven in since the team's opening win over Rhode Island's Burrillville Little League Saturday night. Santelli said that keeping him at the bottom of the lineup — Kostas bats ninth out of the 12 players who all see the plate in a game — was by design and not demotion. 'I like the idea of power at the back of the lineup,' Kostas said. 'Even at the bottom of the order, we can score as much as the top does.' Kevin Moran, who leads the group in pregame meditations, got the last seven outs and continued to shut down Fairfield's bats for the rest of the game, minus one run attributed to Delgado in the fourth. 6 Farifield's Joe Sorrentino (33) gets comforted by first base coach David Gryga after making the first out of the 6th inning down five runs. Hearst Connecticut Media 'The pregame meditation is really working. Everyone's hitting the ball very well and playing very well,' Moran said. Advertisement 'It just helps calm us down — the coaches, too.' Fairfield and New Jersey's Jackson-Holbrook play for the other spot in the championship Wednesday at 5 p.m. Fairfield won the first matchup in extra innings after New Jersey had the tying run called off due to an illegal headfirst slide at second base, which ended the opening round game. With a few well-earned days off filled with a docket of poker and Wiffle ball, the Bulls will be gearing up for the biggest days of their lives — while soaking in the moment that's got the island going bonkers. 6 Fairfield's SJ Taxiltaridis (14) reacting to the 6-1 loss during the East Regional Little League Regional Tournament game, Fairfield vs St Jamestown, on Monday August 4, 2025. Hearst Connecticut Media Advertisement 'Our local bars have the game on, we're getting videos from the people just going nuts,' Santelli said. 'St. James-Smithtown — we put it on the map.' For pitcher and first baseman Jeremy Katz, who hails from nearby Kings Park, he's also showing the world something about his hometown, where Craig Biggio was raised. 'Kings Park is a small town, but it's not a one-hit wonder,' said Katz, who had a three-RBI day. 'Talent comes from Kings Park, and people should know that.'

Braintree one win away from clinching Little League World Series berth after blowing out Vermont

A group of young baseball players from Braintree is now just one win away from clinching a berth in the 2025 Little League World Series. The Braintree American 12U team crushed Vermont in the second round of the New England Regional Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, on Monday, securing a spot in Thursday night's regional final. Caden McCarthy opened the scoring for the Wamps, and he and his teammates never looked back, picking up a 10-0 mercy rule victory. The impressive win comes just days after Braintree handed Maine a 15-0 blowout loss in the opening round of the New England Regional. Braintree will next face the winner of Wednesday's New Hampshire-Vermont game. Hot bats and dominant pitching have fueled Braintree's summer success, pushing them to a 16-0 record. Dozens of excited fans gathered last week for a special sendoff to wish the youngsters good luck as they embark on a mission to advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on August 13. Many of those same fans gathered Monday to watch the game and enjoy a French toast breakfast at the South Side Tavern in Braintree. Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.
