Shelbourne eye history as Joey O'Brien's Reds one step from European group stage dream

Shelbourne are 90 minutes from guaranteeing European group stage football for the first time in their history
WHAT is at stake is staring at Shelbourne every day.
The Tolka Park press conference room has a giant photograph that takes up a full wall showing a fans' display from last year of major European moments.

Shelbourne take a 2-1 lead into their Europa League clash against Rijeka of Croatia

Joey O'Brien and his side will seal European group stage football if they progress on Tuesday night
There is the late Theo Dunne - grandfather of current player Evan Caffrey - exchanging pennants with Barcelona's Sigfrid Gracia ahead of the 1963 Cup Winners' Cup meeting.
Beside it, there is former boss Dermot Keely embracing Richie Baker after beating Sloga Jugomagnat in 2000 - the first Irish away win in Europe in 18 years.
Then there is also Dave Rogers in action against Hajduk Split in 2004, when he scored a stunning volley that set up a Champions League play-off with Deportivo La Coruna.
And, finally, there is Ollie Byrne, the late Shelbourne CEO who dared to dream that his club could reach the Champions League group stages.
Tonight, they could do that in the Conference League for the first time in their history and have fans making a display to honour one of the current Red men.
Avoid defeat to Croatians Rijeka in tonight's Europa League tie and Shelbourne go onto a play-off tie for the Europa group stages with the Conference groups already guaranteed.
There is the safety net of a Conference League play-off against either Vikingur of the Faroe Islands or Northern Irish champions Linfield no matter what.
But a 2-1 win in Rijeka last Wednesday has it all - the €3.8 million in prize money, European football until Christmas and a lifetime of memories - up for grabs right now.
Defender Paddy Barrett knows all about it having been part of the Dundalk team that reached the Europa League in 2016.
He said: 'It's life changing experiences as you're playing against top quality players, top quality teams, and you're playing against unbelievable fan bases - like our own here.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca opens up on heartbreak of losing team-mate at 22 in death that shocked footballing world
'That's the experiences that you want as a player. So it's great to be a part of that.
'We know the task ahead, it's obviously not something that clubs do from Ireland year in, year out.
'But look, but when it comes along, when the opportunity does come along, it's amazing and we know what's at stake.'
Not that Barrett will be letting those thoughts cloud his mind when the game kicks off tonight.
He added: 'I don't think back about any games. If that was the case I'd be sitting here all day thinking about all the mistakes I've made throughout my career!
'It's all about Tuesday night and it's one that we're looking forward to.'
And boss Joey O'Brien stressed that while he knows the crowd will be wrapped up in the occasion, his team must focus on the game.
He said: 'I've said it to the lads, you've to realise these opportunities don't come around too often.
'So from a players point of view and us as a staff just make sure you put your best foot forward and make sure you have no regrets.
'It's not really thinking about what's at stake and what I can do for the club money-wise, financial-wise.
'If you start thinking like that, you start gripping the bat too tight. It's one of my favourite sayings - you start thinking, 'oh if this happens we can do this'.
'I just don't think you can play like that and that's my honest opinion. I think you need to go out and have an understanding of what you've got here and make sure you're ready to play.
'Don't have a regret of thinking that I was thinking of what could have been.
'I don't think you can play football like that. I didn't play that way as a player so I wouldn't like my team doing that.
'It's about going out making sure the lads put their best foot forward and have no regrets.'
SHEL SHOCKERS?
O'Brien also stressed that Rijeka will be no pushovers as he acknowledged the Croats should still be favourites, and the bookmakers agree.
But he believes home advantage - Rijeka have brought no supporters with them - can make the difference.
He said: 'At home, the whole place is rocking for you, it does give you that little bit more I suppose, that buzz, that little bit more energy sometimes.
'To have the fanbase there, really loud and you know, they're supporting you, there's always that little added bonus.
'We have to make the most of that, we have to give them something to cheer about. I'm sure at the start there's going to be a real excitement at the game because of what's at stake.'
O'Brien also knows Rijeka should be better than last week with playmaker Toni Fruk available again after suspension.
And boss Radomir Dalovic was not too complimentary of Shelbourne in the build-up suggesting that the Reds had little more going for them than aggression.
Still, O'Brien acknowledged tonight is about going through by hook or by crook as he confirmed that his squad have practiced penalties in case they are needed.
And, as another banner in the fan display on the press conference room wall says; 'F**k them in the Tolka.'
There will be no one in the stands at Tolka Park tonight who be be bothered if that proves the method of victory.
As that fan display also says, 'Raised on Shels And Glories'. Tonight is their chance."

But Neville, 50, is dismissive of United's prospects of coming close to the top of the tree this term. And he suggested that even earning Champions League football was out of the equation unless Ruben Amorim can land a new No 1. Neville said: 'For United, the top six would be healthy. 'We've gone past the point now where we say Manchester United have to win the league. That's unrealistic. 'But without Europe, they could get into the top six if they have a good run, if they get a goalkeeper. But a lot of things have to go their way.' Neville, whose criticisms of United last term grew increasingly strident as the club plunged to its worst top flight finish in half a century, feels the summer spending at the front end has made a difference. United, being linked with PSG gloveman Gianluigi Donnarumma - who is determined to quit the European champions - have splashed out £200m to land Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and now Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Advertisement CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS All three are set to start when United open their campaign against Arsenal on Sunday. Speaking at the Sky Sports season launch, Neville added: 'If you said to me after that Europa League Final defeat to Spurs that Manchester United would have a forward line of those three that they've signed, I'd take that, I'd have snapped your hand off. Gary Neville names four Man Utd stars who must leave this summer 'I didn't think they had £200 million to spend. Advertisement 'So the fact they've signed those three players is good. 'I like the profile of those players, whether they settle in now is obviously the big question. 'Two of them are proven Premier League players, although they've got to step up a level. 'Mbeumo is quite solid, he's robust, he's played at Premier League level. He's young, he's got potential but can he get off to a good start? That's important for him.' Advertisement He added: 'Can they embed themselves at United? Can they get the probably 35-40 goals which would be par for those three players? 'If they can get 40 goals - and United's goals total last season was terrible - they've got chance of getting into that top six. 'But they've got to settle those three players, and we can't take that for granted anymore at United, I don't think. 'United will be looking at Champions League, that'll be the ambition. Advertisement 'Not playing in Europe has to help, because there's basically more training time, less pressure on the players, less injuries. 'It means that the best players can play more often in the league, and not have those demands of a Thursday night game. 'But we've got to start the season well - and there are some tough fixtures early on.' Sky Sports and NOW will broadcast over 215 Premier League matches exclusively live this season

Shelbourne v Rijeka – Croatian side draw level as Reds seeking huge payday in Europa League qualifier

Live | Shelbourne take on Croatian side HNK Rijeka in their Europa League third qualifying round second leg tie at Tolka Park this evening. Leading 2-1 from last week's first leg, the League of Ireland Premier Division champions are just a draw away from an estimated €3.4million in Uefa prizemoney and further riches with a guaranteed place in the league phase of the Conference League. Catch all the action as it happens here. Toni Fruk 33' 44' Corner Rijeka A couple of corners for the Croatian champions presents a couple of half-chances, but Milan Mbeng does well to hook the ball clear. 41' Corner Rijeka Toni Fruk is orchestrating everything at the minute for Rijeka. After winning the corner, Niko Jankovic delivers the corner to Dejan Petrovic whose header sailed marginally wide. Shels not touch tight on the corners so far! 36' Scoring Chance Shelbourne Player Kerr McInroy CHANCE! Brilliant response from Shels as Milan Mbeng crosses deep to Jamie Norris. The midfielder directed his header back to Kerr McInroy who stung the palms of Zlomislic with a rasping strike. Ali Coote can't convert from the rebound. 33' Goal Rijeka Scorer Toni Fruk Assist Ante Juric GOAL! We are level in the tie and it's a simply wonderful goal from Rijeka! Ante Orec flicked the cross back to Ante Juric who teed it up for Toni Fruk. Labelled the talisman of the Croatian champions, he cuts across the ball with a wonderful volley that nestles in the lower-left corner. Wessel Speel never got near it despite his best attempts. 31' Scoring Chance Shelbourne Player Milan Mbeng The best chance of the game since Coote's opportunity earlier in the half! Mipo Odubeko digs out a wonderful cross to the back post. Milan Mbeng makes a late run, but can't quite make contact with the ball. Positive signs for Joey O'Brien's men. 29' Corner Rijeka Toni Fruk threads a wonderful pass through to Merveil Ndockyt. Paddy Barrett does well to stay with the Congolese attacker and flick it out for a corner. Rijeka get a decent chance from the set-piece as Ante Majstorovic fires past the near post. Shels' marking a bit loose there! 25' Free Kick Shelbourne The twinkling feet of Kerr McInroy enables the Shels midfielder to skip out of Merveil Ndockyt's way before getting his ankles clipped. That relieves some pressure on the hosts' defence as both teams take a water break in the 22-degree heat. 19' Corner Rijeka Tiago Dantas works a short corner with Niko Jankovic, but Kameron Ledwidge is alert and gets the block in to prevent the cross. Jankovic has just won a free for a foul by Sam Bone to keep Rijeka on the front foot. 16' Rijeka have enjoyed the lion's share of possession thus far, however every misplaced pass is met by a chorus of whistles from the Shels faithful. Toni Fruk is drifting around looking for half spaces to create from. A lot of the Croatian champions' play has been forced down the flanks where Milan Mbeng and Kameron Ledwidge have stood firm. 11' Scoring Chance Rijeka Player Ante Orec Toni Fruk's initial free-kick effort smashes into the Shels' wall. The rebound falls kindly for full-back Ante Orec who swings a right boot at it - well wide of Wessel Speel's goal. Danger averted! 9' Free Kick Rijeka Shooter Toni Fruk Great opportunity for the Croatian champions as Paddy Barrett clips the heels of Toni Fruk on the edge of the box. Free kick to Rijeka with Fruk standing over it. 7' Dan McDonnell highlights the threat possessed by Rijeka's Fruk: The Croatian TV director spent most of last week throwing to images of Toni Fruk in the stands and he's already very involved here with a few tricks and flicks that highlight why he is Rijeka's creative hub. 5' Scoring Chance Shelbourne Player Ali Coote BIG appeals for a penalty as Ali Coote chases a long ball from Harry Wood. The Scottish attacker gets the first touch, but Rijeka shot-stopper Zlomislic got a vital glove in to prevent Coote from taking it past him. VAR is in operation tonight, but it has not been called upon yet by the Romanian arbiter! 4' The atmosphere has been rocking so far in these opening exchanges. It's particularly intimidating for Rijeka who have no travelling fans thanks to a Uefa ban imposed on their supporters. 1. Half The ball is rolling in this first-half! The referee for this evening's match is Marian Barbu who forms a Romanian trio with his assistant referees George Florin Neacsu and Imre Laszlo Bucsi. It's an ideal evening for football in Drumcondra with sunny skies overhead, a mild easterly breeze and temperatures lingering around a sweltering 21 degrees. 45 minutes ago HOW DID THE FIRST-LEG PLAY OUT? Last Wednesday's first-leg was pretty successful from an Shels point of view. Despite falling a goal behind in the 56th-minute courtesy of a Niko Jankovic penalty, Shels responded inside two minutes with a wonderfully worked set-piece goal from Sam Bone. John Martin, who replaced the injured Sean Boyd in the first-half, became the hero on 70 minutes as he directed his header into the opposite corner for a famous victory on Croatian soil. 46 minutes ago RIJEKA'S TEAM TONIGHT: Last season's Croatian champions will hope to extract some revenge on their Irish counterparts after last week's first-leg loss. Tonight, head coach Radomir Dalovic lines his team out as follows in a 4-2-3-1 formation with skipper Martin Zlomislic between the posts while speedy full-backs Ante Orec and Mladen Devetak keep their places. Talismanic attacking midfielder Toni Fruk returns from suspension with ex-Bayern talent Tiago Dantas part of a double pivot with Dejan Petrovic. Meanwhile, last week's goal-scorer Niko Jankovic shifts onto the left wing behind striker Ante Juric: 47 minutes ago SHELBOURNE LINE-UP: Head coach Joey O'Brien sets his team up as follows with a solitary alteration from his team that defeated Rijeka 2-1 last Wednesday. Wessel Speel starts in goals, with Paddy Barrett captain on the evening alongside Milan Mbeng, Sam Bone and Kameron Ledwidge. An unchanged midfield sees Harry Wood and Jamie Norris start alongside JJ Lunney, meanwhile Mipo Odubeko spearheads the forward line with Ali Coote and Kerr McInroy on the wings. UEFA graphics suggest an unlikely 4-3-3 formation for the hosts:
