Why are US flags are flying at half-staff in Texas? Peace Officers Memorial Day

Yahoo15-05-2025
Flags across the United States and Texas are at half-staff Sunday in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which commemorates the fallen officers in 2024 and years prior.
President Donald Trump issued a statement earlier this week, recognizing the holiday.
"This week and always, we honor the courageous men and women serving in law enforcement and memorialize those who sacrificed their lives defending the thin blue line," Trump wrote in a news release.
He added that in prior years under the administration of former President Joe Biden, the job got tougher for law enforcement.
"A nation in chaos ceases to be a citadel of liberty. Tragically, the previous administration allowed lawlessness to permeate our country, making it harder for our law enforcement officers to do their jobs. Their reckless, soft-on-crime policies emboldened criminals and thugs; wreaked havoc on the sanctity of our homes, businesses, and public spaces; instilled fear; and jeopardized public trust.
"I stand in steadfast solidarity with those who defend our freedoms and the families who love and support them. We pray for those who grieve the fallen and pledge that their lives, legacies, and sacrifices will forever be remembered by our grateful Nation," he added.
In the news release, he officially proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week surrounding as National Police Week. However, this has been celebrated annually after President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating it as such.
Police officers from across the United States gather in Washington, D.C., to honor and remember officers who died or were disabled while on duty, according to policeweek.org.

Detention Officer Isaiah Patrick Bias of Ellis County Sheriff's Office died Dec. 16, 2024, by assault.
There are specific holidays and events when flags are flown at half-staff in the United States. That includes:
Memorial Day, when the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.
Peace Officers Memorial Day, unless that day is also Armed Forces Day.
Patriot Day.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
National Firefighters Memorial Day.
President Dwight Eisenhower also issued a proclamation on the proper times for flying the flag at half-staff when government officials die. That includes:
30 days at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions after the death of the president or a former president.
10 days at half-staff after the death of the vice president, the chief justice or a retired chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, or the speaker of the House of Representatives.
From the date of death until interment for an associate justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former vice president, the president pro tempore of the Senate, the majority leader of the Senate, the minority leader of the Senate, the majority leader of the House of Representatives, or the minority leader of the House of Representatives.

Don't buy claims Trump runs a White House MAGA gift shop

In August 2025, after European leaders joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, a photo circulated that social media users claimed (archived, archived) depicted Trump showing Zelenskyy and France's President Emmanuel Macron his White House Make America Great Again gift shop. The photo showed Trump, Zelenskyy, Macron and an unidentified man in front of a shelf of neatly arranged hats and other items. The hats bore slogans including "Make America Great Again," "Trump 2028," "4 More Years" and "Gulf of America." "Make America Great Again" was a term popularized by Trump during his first and second presidential election campaigns. One X user whose post had more than 600,000 views at the time of this writing posted the photo with the caption, "Embarrassing….Trump showed Zelenskyy and Macron his MAGA gift shop at the White House" (X user @WUTangKids) The claim that the photo depicted Trump showing off a gift shop also circulated on Facebook (archived), Threads (archived), Instagram (archived) and Bluesky (archived). Snopes readers wrote in to ask if the claim was true. The photo of Trump, Zelenskyy and Macron was authentic and originally posted (archived) to X by Margo Martin, one of Trump's communications advisers. Martin identified Macron, who stood with his back to the camera in the photo. However, we found no evidence to support the accompanying claim that hat Trump was running a MAGA gift shop out of the White House. It was unclear where exactly Martin took the photo, though official photographs from the Aug. 18, 2025, meeting indicated that the leaders met at the White House. The Trump Organization, Trump's business managed by his sons Eric and Donald Jr., has an online merchandise store as of this writing that sells some of the items seen in Martin's photo, though the company does not appear to have a White House branch. The White House does have an official gift shop that supports injured Secret Service members and charitable causes. That shop does not sell hats like the ones seen in Martin's photo. Snopes contacted the White House to ask if Martin's photo showed a MAGA gift shop inside the White House as social media users claimed, and we await a reply. The Aug. 18, 2025, meeting with European leaders and Zelenskyy was not the first time Trump showed off the collection of merch to guests visiting the White House. Trump hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House on Aug. 8, 2025, as the pair signed a joint declaration of peace in the long-running conflict between the countries. Shortly thereafter, a video (archived) circulated online that featured Trump showing off the same collection of merch from Martin's photo to Aliyev. In the footage, Trump handed one item to Aliyev saying it was "for your wife." After showing off his "Trump 2028" and "4 More Years" hats, Trump gestured toward the video recorder and said, "Fellas, grab what you want, it's OK." The video from Aliyev's visit appeared to indicate that Trump kept a stock of his merch to give to guests as gifts rather than to run an official store. "Trump 2028" and "4 More Years" were references to Trump's previous indications that he would like to run for a third term despite the Constitution's 22nd Amendment that barred any person from being "elected to the office of the President more than twice." Trump told NBC in March 2025 that "A lot of people want me to do it," referring to running for a third term and that "There are methods which you could do it." During a CNBC interview on Aug. 6, 2025, Trump said he would "probably not" run again though "I'd like to." Trump further told Aliyev on Aug. 8, 2025, while holding a "Trump 2028" hat, "Everybody wants me to run." "45 | 47 Collection." Trump Attacks Smithsonian For Focus On 'How Bad Slavery Was' And, Boy, The Responses

Donald Trump was the subject of much internet mockery on Tuesday after he griped in a Truth Social post about the Smithsonian Institution (checks notes) portraying slavery as a bad thing. In the post, the president lashed out at America's museums for being 'the last remaining segment of 'WOKE,'' before singling out the Smithsonian as 'OUT OF CONTROL' for discussing 'how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been,' but nothing about 'Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.' Trump's animosity toward the Smithsonian is nothing new. Back in March, he issued an executive order that targeted the research institute for content he claimed promoted so-called 'divisive ideology.' But one person's 'divisive ideology' is most people's idea of accurate historical representation. So naturally, people blasted Trump for complaining about the Smithsonian putting slavery in a bad light. Related... 15 of Gavin Newsom's most brutal roasts of Trump that have the left cackling & MAGA melting down

Shiela Fitzgerald/Shutterstock;California Governor Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump. California Governor Gavin Newsom is setting the internet on fire with his new social media strategy that is not only hilarious but has the added benefit of making MAGA angry. Two birds, one stone. Newsom has been roasting the Right using memes and dunking President Donald Trump and Republican politicians by imitating Trump's own all-caps, deranged style of posting on Truth Social. Over the course of the last month, the governor and his social media team have become masters at trolling. Camille Zapata is the head of Newsom's press office and runs his @CAGovernor account, while director of communications Izzy Gardon and other members of the team run @GovPressOffice and @GavinNewsom, and all of them are well-versed in Internet memes and students of the way Trump likes to post. The social media posts have been so successful that they've managed to anger Republican politicians and even caused a Fox News host to crash out on air. After Newsom's office posted memes making fun of Vice President JD Vance and Trump supporter Kid Rock, and labeled Kristi Noem 'Commander Cosplay' and Tomi Lahren 'woke,' The Five host Dana Perino melted down and called on Newsom's wife to stop him. Democrats, on the other hand, have been cheering Newsom on by reposting his greatest hits, creating Trump-like AI memes of Newsom, while the media is busy creating best-of lists. The LGBTQ+ community is rightfully sick of Newsom after he called trans athletes competing in women's sports 'deeply unfair' in the debut episode of his podcast, but it's hard to deny that his tweet storm is having an impact on Republicans and MAGA voters. Newsom may be one of the only Democrats willing to fight fire with fire, and the internet is loving him for it! Newsom's press office making fun of Trump by mimicking the bizarre all-caps way he posts on Truth Social is a hilarious and clever way to dunk on the president. Calling his hands "tiny" and roasting him for needing "little baby stairs" to get into Air Force One is the icing on the cake. "Tiny hands" and "beta" are the perfect nicknames for a man obsessed with his own virility and masculinity. The internet spent a couple of days making fun of the way JD Vance runs, and Newsom joined in on the fun. Newsom's press office is getting eerily good at posting like Trump. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was another target for Newsom's ire, calling him "little man" while roasting Trump for his obsession with maps and calling him Donald "TACO" J. Trump. After Texas House Democrats broke quorum and fled the state for Illinois and California, Texas Senator Ted Cruz poked the bear by writing on X that they were probably off having dinner with Newsom "at the French Laundry." Cruz meant it as a powerful burn, but Newsom shot back by reminding everyone of the time Cruz fled Texas for Cancun while Texans were being devastated by a harsh winter storm. He has mastered the art of sarcasm. Either Newsom or his social media manager is as chronically online as the rest of us and is getting in on the FAFO trend. Sometimes all he needs to do is laugh at Trump. Newsom has been leading the charge, fighting against the Trump administration's use of ICE to enact their cruel immigration policies, including dunking on Donald Trump Jr. for being his dad's mouthpiece and starting a ridiculous wireless phone company. Newsom's whole social media team deserves a raise for this one! Using the "old man yells at clouds" meme to describe Fox News anchor Trace Gallagher will never not be hilarious. Newsom's press office posted a video montage of his back and forth with conservative political commentator Tomi Lahren, which included Newsom making fun of her by posting, "Tomi's account is basically Yelp for toilets now," with the caption "thoughts and prayers." Hilarious. Further proof that Newsom has hired funny, young, and chronically online people to run his press office. Talking down to Trump and throwing his own book (The Art of the Deal) back in his face will never not be funny. Superimposing Vance's face on the meme of Raygun doing a terrible "break dance" at the Olympics is the reason Photoshop was invented. Calling White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller "Voldemort's hand" and using Cards Against Humanity to say Newsom is hurting him? Chef's kiss. No notes. This Republican made the mistake of filming his anti-Newsom "rap" — we're being generous calling it that — with a cutout of the governor behind him so that it looks like Newsom is taking him from behind.
