Ideal guru and sishya

The Hindu13-06-2025
Tiruvalluvar says, 'The crown of wealth is one's compassion; all other wealth is found among even the meanest of men.' One may say it is very difficult to show kindness to one's persecutor in the Kali Yuga, but when one decides to overlook faults in others who set out to injure one, then one is walking in God's way, as shown by our acharyas, said Damal S. Ramakrishnan.
Saint Ramanuja had a harrowing experience when his guru himself orchestrated an attempt to cause injury to Ramanuja, while they had crossed the forests of the Vindhyas. Sensing the mood in the camp, Ramanuja slipped away and made his escape through the forests, keen on returning to Kancheepuram. However, he did not know the direction to travel and lay down exhausted under a tree. A hunter and his spouse appeared forthwith and enquired about his travails. Out of respect and regard for his guru and impelled by his inherent compassion, he refrained from naming anyone; instead, he merely says he has to reach Kanchi and whether they can guide him. The hunter couple readily offers to take him to Kanchi as they were also headed there. Ramanuja says, 'Ramaya Ramabhadraya' (You appear like Rama and Sita to me). The couple asks, in feigned innocence, 'Who is this Rama and Sita that you speak of?'
Ramanuja, stunned by their 'ignorance' , immediately narrates the Ramayana in great detail, which ends as they reach Kanchi. Here, the couple disappears as soon as they enter the town and that is when Ramanuja realises that the hunter couple was none but Varadaraja Perumal and Perundevi Thayar, the deities of Kancheepuram temple.
In another incident, that took place years later, when his guru Tirukoshtiyur Nambi arrives in Srirangam, Ramanuja goes forward to receive him and as is the practice, prostrates before Nambi. In sampradaya, a sishya, prostrating to the guru, will continue to do so until the guru calls a halt to the prostration. When Nambi did not give the stop signal for a long time, Kidambi Acharya, Ramnuja's sishya, took matters into his own hand and ending Ramanuja's prostration in the hot sands, lifted him up, defying Nambi. However, Nambi smiled and said, 'This was a test to identify Ramanuja's true sishya and you have done very well.'
Acharyas not only possess great knowledge that they pass on, but they also identify the most sincere sishya, like Ramanuja.

Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirath Kshetra Trust will organise a three–day mega flag hoisting ceremony at the Ram temple from November 23 to 25 in which sadhus and other eminent guests from across the country will be invited. Flags will also be hoisted in other temples in the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya. The main ceremony of flag hoisting will take place on November 25. The flag will be hoisted on a 42-feet flag pole atop the 161-foot-high spire of the Ram temple. (HT file) The three-day rituals will start from November 23 and the main ceremony of flag hoisting will take place on November 25. The flag will be hoisted on a 42-feet flag pole atop the 161-foot-high spire of the Ram temple. Flags will be hoisted on the spires of all temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sun, Ganesh, Hanuman, Mata Bhagwati and Annapurna. In addition to this, flags will also be hoisted atop temples dedicated to Sheshavatar. The Ram Janmabhoomi complex has a Saptarishi Mandap which comprises seven temples dedicated to sages from the Ramayana. These temples house idols of seers and devotees who played significant roles in Lord Rama's life. They include Maharishi Valmiki, Maharishi Vishwamitra, Maharishi Agastya, Maharishi Vashistha, Nishad Raj, Ahilya and Shabari. According to Anil Mishra, a member of the Trust, around 5000 guests will be invited for the ceremony and a list is being prepared. The flag hoisting ceremony will also coincide with the Vivah Panchami. On this day in Ayodhya, the marriage of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita is celebrated which is also known as Ram-Janaki Vivah. On this day, Ram's baraat (wedding procession) travels from Ayodhya to Janakpur (Nepal), where Sita was born, and the marriage is solemnised. The Vivah Panchami is celebrated as the marriage anniversary of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. On this day in Ayodhya, the Ram-Sita marriage celebration is observed with great pomp, including bhajan-kirtan, Ramayana recitation and the display of Ram-Sita's tableau. Special celebrations will also take place in Janakpur, Nepal. Janakpur, also known as Mithila Nagar, is the main centre of Vivah Panchami where Lord Ram's baraat arrives and the marriage is celebrated. According to Mishra, devotees will be able to visit the entire Ram Janmabhoomi campus after October this year. 'Around 90 percent work of remaining temples spread across the Ram Janmabhoomi is complete,' Mishra said. Out of four entry gates in Ram temple, construction work of two is over. Construction work of the Ram temple is almost complete with Ram Lalla installed on the ground floor and his family on the first floor in Ram Darbar. The second floor will house rare and significant scriptures related to Lord Ram.

Raksha Bandhan 2025: Did Lord Ram Have A Sister? Who Sends Him A Rakhi Even Today?

Last Updated: Raksha Bandhan 2025: While everyone knows that King Dasharatha had four sons, Lord Ram, Bharat, Lakshman, and Shatrughna, very few know that the brothers also had a sister The sacred festival of Raksha Bandhan, which celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, is just around the corner. According to the Hindu calendar, it will be celebrated on August 9 this year. It's a day marked by trust, love, and the promise of protection. On this occasion, sisters tie a Rakhi, a sacred thread, on their brothers' wrists, and in return, brothers vow to protect them in all circumstances. But do you know who tied Rakhi to the four sons of King Dasharatha, including Lord Ram? When you must have heard and seen the tales of Ramayana, you might not have heard much mention of Lord Ram's sisters. According to religious texts, King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya had a daughter named Shanta, who is often overlooked in popular retellings of the Ramayana. Shanta was the elder sister of Ram, Bharat, Lakshman, and Shatrughna. As per scriptures, she used to tie Rakhi to all four brothers during the Treta Yuga. Mahant Shashikant Das of the Ram Kachahari temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, confirms the existence of Shanta. He says that although she was born to Queen Kaushalya, Shanta was later adopted by Kaushalya's sister Varshini, who was childless. This story is mentioned in some lesser-known texts and oral traditions. Even today, the tradition lives on. Sisters from across India send Rakhi through the post to Lord Ram at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya every year. There is even a dedicated temple for Shanta in Ayodhya, and after the construction of the grand Ram Mandir, Rakhi is sent from there annually on Rakshabandhan for Lord Ram and his brothers. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
