Boise State Heads Into 2025 College Football Season As Favorite In G5

Boise State traveled to Eugene on the second Saturday of the 2024 college football season and led No. 7 Oregon early in the fourth quarter. The unranked Broncos went down in defeat on a field goal as time expired, though Spencer Danielson' team served notice that it would be one to be reckoned with.
While the Ducks ascended to No. 1 by the end of October and eventually lost the national championship to Ohio State, the Broncos galloped through the Mountain West, climbed to No. 8 and their way to State College where they lost (31-14) to the Nittany Lions in a College Football Playoff game that was a one-score affair with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The defeat halted an 11-game win streak and concluded a 12-2 season.
No longer with the services of Heisman runner-up Ashton Jeanty, the No. 6 selection of the Las Vegas Raiders after leading the nation with 186 yards rushing per game, the easy question is whether Boise State has enough offensive production to reign supreme and represent the Group of Five in the 12-team CFP once again.
If you believe the three major print preview publications (Athlon, Lindy's and Phil Steele) that began to appear on magazine shelves around Memorial Day then, yes, the Broncos will be at the top of the G5 chart once again. There is no reason to think otherwise as they head into their final season as a member of the Mountain West before moving to what will be a nine-team Pac-12.
Even with Jeanty, defensive end Ahmed Hassanein and safety Seyi Oladipo in the NFL, Danielson is not lacking when it comes to returning playmakers. Indeed, quarterback Maddux Madsen will operate behind an experienced line and again have Matt Lauter, one of the nation's top tight ends, among his targets. The running game should more than hold its own thanks in part to portal acquisition Malik Sherrod (Fresno State) and the continued development of Sire Gaines, who got his feet wet last season.
Meanwhile, a defense that averaged 3.9 sacks per game to rank second nationally, should again be stout despite key losses. That is thanks to thee return of, among others, end Jayden Virgin-Morgan (team-high 10 sacks), safety Ty Bennefield (leading tackler) and corner A'Marion McCoy (14 PBUs).
For the third time in five full seasons the Broncos open in the Sunshine State when they meet USF for a Thursday evening affair August 28 in Tampa. A tricky spot in the schedule is a trip to Notre Dame on Oct 4, which comes one week after hosting Appalachian State, whose 2024 slip below .500 is likely temporary.
Tulane among others to watch
While Phil Steele has Toledo (No. 25) and Memphis (No. 27) at least knocking on the door of G5 supremacy, only three other teams -- James Madison, Navy and Tulane -- are in the top 60 of each publication, which serves to underscore the thought of how wide open it is among the non-power conference.
There is agreement when it comes to the Green Wave, who are ranked tightly from No. 43 to No. 48 while the Midshipmen range from No. 40 to No. 54. Phil Steele has JMU at No. 32, far ahead of Lindy's and Athlon, which have the Dukes at No. 58 and No. 59, respectively.
Tulane is 32-10 with three American championship game appearances (one win) in as many years, including Jon Sumrall's first as coach in New Orleans last season. While the defense has four of its top five tacklers returning, the offense endured major blows with the departures of quarterback Darian Mensah, who transferred to Duke – Guess who's coming to Yulman Stadium on September 13? -- after placing sixth nationally in pass efficiency, and running back Makhi Hughes, who left for Oregon after rushing for 2,779 yards and 22 touchdowns in two seasons. In addition, the top three wideouts expired their eligibility and the No. 1 tight end transferred to Miami.

Kaden Semonza (Ball State) and Brendan Sullivan (Iowa/Northwestern), who arrived in June, will battle it out at QB and behind a line in need of three new starters. In addition to Duke and reunion with Mensah, the schedule the first four weeks also includes the opener versus Northwestern and a trip to Ole Miss.
Navy won 10 games last season, including over service academy rival Army and against Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl. While the offensive line had three starters graduate, much of the offense returns, including quarterback Blake Horvath, who was the American's third-leading rusher and totaled 30 touchdowns. Though the top three tacklers, led by linebacker and the American's leading tackler, Colin Ramos, graduated, there is plenty of talent and depth returning on a defense that was third in the conference in allowing 22.2 points a year ago.
The back end of Navy's schedule is demanding with a trip to South Bend, a visit from USF, Thanksgiving turkey in Memphis, and the traditional clash with Army, which will be in Baltimore for the first time since 2016.
James Madison is 28-9 in its three seasons of FBS affiliation, each as a member of the Sun Belt in which they are 17-7. Bob Chesney took over for Curt Cignetti, who did wonders at Indiana, and went 9-4 as a first-year FBS coach in 2024. The big question heading into preseason camp is the health of quarterback Alonza Barnett. The junior threw 26 TDs and only four INTs before tearing an ACL in the regular-season finale. Hence, it should not surprise if Matthew Sluka, who played under Chesney at Holy Cross for two seasons before transferring to UNLV last year, takes over the offense at least initially.
The Sun Belt's top scoring defense (20.5) a year ago had four of its top six tacklers depart and new DC Colin Hitschler's unit will be challenged in the season's opening month with trips to Louisville and Liberty as well as a conference opener versus Georgia Southern.

Cowboys VP makes odd comment regarding Micah Parsons contract situation

Former Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons is currently in the middle of the NFL's most notable contract dispute with his current team, the Dallas Cowboys. Parsons has shown up to training camp instead of holding out, but the two sides still appear to be at odds on coming to an agreement on a new contract. And some of the recent comments coming out of the Cowboys front office suggest we are not about to get much closer anytime too soon. Speaking to some members of the media during a training camp practice over the weekend, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones made a comment that could be interpreted as the team is not going to budge on whatever offer is currently on the table for Parsons. "We want to pay Micah too," Jones said. "He's got to want to be paid." For his part, Parsons has always shown he is committed to working things out with the Cowboys and taking the steps necessary to show he can be relied on as a leader of the team, especially on defense. Parsons has made his presence known in workouts and his decision to show up for training camp rather than holding out is his way of showing the team he is there to work no matter what. But recent contract extensions around the league for some of the top edge rushers in the game have continued to raise the bar for what Parsons could expect to earn. T.J. Watt recently signed an extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers for four years and $150 million. Many NFL experts believe Parsons will get more on a new deal. Parsons is entering his fifth season in the NFL and will do so on a club option for $24 million this fall. Follow Kevin McGuire on Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Patriots 53-man roster projection: Where do things stand after the first week of camp?

After four days of practice at the New England Patriots' training camp, it's about time for pads to come on. This week, we'll learn a lot more about the offensive line, which has shown some reasons for concern, even if it's tough to judge the group sans pads. Still, there has been enough to glean from the first few sun-soaked practices to offer up our first roster projection of the summer. There were some particularly tough decisions at running back (do you keep a fullback?), wide receiver (who has justified a spot so far?) and linebacker (has Marte Mapu done enough?). Advertisement Let's dive in. In: Drake Maye, Joshua Dobbs Out: Ben Wooldridge No surprises here. It would be a surprise if they kept Wooldridge on the 53-man roster. He's just competing for a spot on the practice squad at this point. So far, it seems like there's been a governor placed on Maye as the new staff prioritizes having him take what the defense gives, even if that's (often) short passes to running backs and tight ends. The question will be when (or if) that changes. The fear is that the O-line is so shaky that the offense has to be based on short passes. In: Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Antonio Gibson, Lan Larison Out: Brock Lampe, Trayveon Williams, Terrell Jennings A lot of the Patriots' offense so far looks like what you'd expect from a Josh McDaniels-led unit. Maye has been under center a lot. Two tight ends have been used frequently, even with Austin Hooper out. I wanted to put Lampe on the roster as a fullback to bulk up those big formations. But there are too many tough decisions, so Lampe narrowly missed out. In: Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, CJ Dippre Out: Jaheim Bell, Jack Westover, Gee Scott Jr. There has been a lot of work to go around at tight end with Hooper out. In those sessions, Westover has probably fared the best. But this is a bet that Dippre, an undrafted rookie, can develop. This could also be a position where the Pats look to add someone in free agency after cutdown day when they see who becomes available. In: Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, Kayshon Boutte Out: Kendrick Bourne, Efton Chism, Ja'Lynn Polk, Javon Baker, DeMeer Blankumsee, John Jiles, Jeremiah Webb No surprise, but this is the toughest position to project for the Patriots. They could keep as many as seven, with two of Bourne, Chism, Polk and Baker making it. But it's hard for me to put Polk on the roster since he hasn't practiced yet. Same for Chism, who hasn't quite matched his production from the spring, and Bourne, who has been just OK in a group of just-OK receivers. Still, Bourne was probably my last player cut in this projection, and maybe I should have put him on with one fewer linebacker. At the top of the depth chart, Diggs and Douglas have both been excellent, while the Patriots could use another receiver separating from the pack. .@DrakeMaye2 🎯 @popshotta3 — New England Patriots (@Patriots) July 26, 2025 In: Will Campbell, Cole Strange, Garrett Bradbury, Mike Onwenu, Morgan Moses, Jared Wilson, Demontrey Jacobs, Caedan Wallace, Marcus Bryant, Tyrese Robinson Out: Vederian Lowe, Sidy Sow, Jack Conley, Layden Robinson, Ben Brown, Yasir Durant, Mehki Butler There were some tough decisions here, too. So far, it looks like Jacobs is the swing tackle, with Wallace getting some work inside and Lowe being injured. So that gets Jacobs on the team. Advertisement The bigger question comes at backup guard. Wallace working there complicates things and could be a sign of what the coaching staff thinks of Sow and Robinson. In: Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Keion White, Khyiris Tonga, Joshua Farmer, Jaquelin Roy, Harold Landry, Anfernee Jennings, K'Lavon Chaisson, Bradyn Swinson Out: Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Elijah Ponder, Jahvaree Ritzie, Isaiah Iton, David Olajiga, Truman Jones The interior of the defensive line looks solid with Williams and Barmore, plus Tonga getting plenty of meaningful reps. The edge rushers are the ones who could make or break this defense. White and Landry are probably the top guys, but it wouldn't be a surprise if Chaisson keeps playing well and pushes for playing time. In: Robert Spillane, Christian Elliss, Jahlani Tavai, Jack Gibbens, Marte Mapu Out: Cam Riley, Monty Rice This group might be a bit bloated, but this is an important spot for special teams contributions, so we kept five instead of another receiver (Bourne). Still, Mapu would be the one to swap out for Bourne if you want more help at receiver. Mapu has spent most of his time at linebacker after being a hybrid safety/linebacker the last two years. He was beaten cleanly by Henderson during one rep at practice on Saturday. As for the top group, Elliss is pushing to get the starting reps alongside Spillane. In: Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Alex Austin, Kobee Minor Out: Isaiah Bolden, Brandon Crossley, Marcellas Dial, DJ James, Miles Battle, Jordan Polk Another cornerback would be nice on this roster, but it would have to come at the expense of someone on the D-line. The battle for the fifth spot here is wide open. Bolden could nab it if he can become the team's kick or punt returner, but for now, I have Henderson as the kick returner with Jones returning punts. Advertisement In: Kyle Dugger, Jabrill Peppers, Craig Woodson, Jaylinn Hawkins, Marcus Epps Out: Dell Pettus, Josh Minkins This is probably the team's best overall position for a third straight year, especially if Dugger can return to his heights of 2023. He'll be a starter next to Peppers, but Woodson, Epps and Hawkins provide plenty of high-end depth and should also contribute on special teams. In: Andy Borregales, Bryce Baringer, Julian Ashby, Brendan Schooler Out: John Parker Romo It would be a big surprise if Romo wins the kicking job, so this quartet seems pretty safe.
