Two govt doctors approach Calcutta HC challenging 'arbitrary' postings
Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Friday was embroiled in yet another legal battle over the alleged arbitrary postings of three senior resident doctors by the state Health Department, with two of them approaching the Calcutta High Court to challenge the order.
The petition filed by Debasish Halder and Asfaqulla Naiya has been admitted by the single-judge vacation bench of Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee. The tentative date of the first hearing in the matter is June 5.
It is not yet clear whether Aniket Mahato, the third senior resident to allegedly become a victim of arbitrary postings like Halder and Naiya, will later become a party in the same case or will file a separate petition in the matter.
All three of them were lead faces of the movement against the ghastly rape and murder of a junior woman doctor of state-R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata within the hospital premises in August last year.
While all three of them were given postings in far-off places, ignoring their first choice of postings during the counselling session on this issue, Halder was given a posting at a hospital that does not officially have any vacancy for senior residents currently.
What was more intriguing was that while a total of 778 junior doctors attended the counselling session for allotment of postings as senior residents, only Halder, Mahato, and Naiya were selectively denied their first choice of postings.
The West Bent Bengal Junior Doctor's Front (WBJDF), the umbrella body of junior doctors in the state spearheading movement against the R.G. Kar rape and murder tragedy, has announced that they would be behind Halder, Mahato, and Naiya in their legal battles against such arbitrary postings.
The three senior doctors have explained that their complaint is not about their posting at far-off places but against the total lack of transparency in the posting allotment process. They also claimed that besides seeking justice for the R.G. Kar rape & murder victim, their demand was also total transparency in the medical administration system in the state.

Sharmishta stands accused of hurting religious sentiments, promoting enmity on the grounds of religion, and intentional insults while talking about Operation Sindoor in a video she posted on her Instagram page. Following massive outrage over her post, she issued an unconditional apology on social media on 15 May. Attempting to explain what was at the root of the video posted and subsequently taken down by the young law student, her father pointed to the charged environment created by celebrity politicians on social media. 'Look at Kangana Ranaut, what does she say? Some Gen Z kids will talk like Kangana Ranaut. They need to draw a line somewhere—on what may be acceptable and what may not be,' Prithviraj Panoli said. 'Sharmishta has learnt her lesson and will come out wiser.' Before Sharmishta's arrest, the Kolkata Police said her family, along with her, was 'absconding'. The police claimed they sought an arrest warrant for Sharmishta from court after failing to locate her to serve her notices. Prithviraj Panoli, however, refuted the police claims. 'Visited Lalbazar multiple times pre-arrest' 'She made the post on 7-8 May and deleted it soon after. However, some people downloaded it and continued sharing it. She received a lot of threats online. People she did not know started calling her. They issued threats to me, as well. So, on 14 May, I asked her to come to Kolkata from Pune, where she is studying,' he said. 'On 15 May morning, she reached Kolkata at 8.30 am. How can the police claim that she was missing from Kolkata then? How do they know where she was or not?' From 15-19 May, the Panoli family, multiple times, visited Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, and the Anandapur police station, Prithviraj Panoli said. The family—he added—was attempting to lodge a complaint over threats Sharmishta was receiving. However, the police, according to him, did not inform them of any FIR against Sharmishta. 'We submitted printed copies of all the threats against us. So, there is documented evidence that we had been approaching the police,' said Panoli. The Panoli family is from Bangalore and currently lives in Kolkata. On the sequence of events before the arrest, Prithviraj Panoli told ThePrint, 'On 18 May, I was constantly in touch with the cops at both police stations, sharing all information, along with online threats we got. We approached a different police officer in the evening of 18 May, informing him that we feared for our safety and security.' Giving an instance of the chain of troubles the family has been facing since the video post, Sharmishta's father said, 'On my way back home, I saw seven to 10 people standing inside my society, looking at our tower.' According to the father, Sharmishta left Kolkata for Gurugram for a scheduled internship, starting 22 May, travelling, over the next few days, to her office in Delhi from her hotel inGurugram. Soon after the scare in the society, Prithviraj Panoli, along with other family members, also booked flight tickets to Gurguram. 'Till 25 May, I was in touch with the Lalbazar police,' Prithviraj Panoli said. 'I, at the same time, had asked her (Sharmishta) not to look at anything. We all had switched off our phones, but I was in touch with the police over WhatsApp. How can they say we were absconding?' 'We even asked the police if any FIR had been registered. By then, I had received threats via mail. If the police wanted to get in touch with us, they had our email IDs,' Prithviraj Panoli added. In the early morning of 31 May, the Kolkata Police arrested Sharmishta from her hotel in Gurugram. 'We could not do anything as there was a warrant,' said the father. Influencer Sharmistha Panoli walks out of Alipore Jail in hate speech case
On Friday (June 6, 2025) afternoon, influencer Sharmistha Panoli stepped outside the Alipore Jail in Kolkata and was set free. She was granted bail in the hate speech case by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday (June 5, 2025) after the Kolkata Police arrested her on May 30 from Gurugram, Haryana. Her father was seen at the Alipore Women's Correctional Home picking her up on Friday afternoon around 3 pm and left the premises in a car escorted by police. On Thursday, the vacation bench of Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury of the Calcutta High Court granted her bail for a bond of ₹10,000. She was also asked to cooperate with the investigation and not leave the country other than for educational purposes which will be reviewed by the court in case such a situation arises. The court also asked the police to offer her protection because her counsel stated that the young woman was receiving rape and death threats after her arrest. She had also reported that she was feeling unsafe inside the prison and encountered hygiene issues. 'The State is also directed to ensure that no further case and/or FIR is registered arising out of the same cause of action and/or similar set of allegations against the petitioner,' the court order stated. The Justice also asked the police to investigate the threats that Ms Panoli has received and file a report with the court. Her counsel said that Ms Panoli had paid the bond and hence she was released after the legal process was over. 'I am of the view that custodial interrogation of the petitioner is not necessary... It is made clear that the I.O. (investigating Officer) shall not unnecessarily summon the petitioner and provide adequate notice and also would be conscious that the petitioner is pursuing her studies from Symbiosis Law School, Pune,' Justice Chowdhury further added in his order. Symbiosis Law School suspended Ms Panoli for three months after the video of her making communal comments went viral and she was arrested. Her counsel said that she will return to college next semester in compliance with the suspension. Ms. Panoli's father told mediapersons that her daughter was a 'proud Hindu' and they had got support from multiple Hindu organisations. 'We are grateful to the organisations and people who supported her,' he said after her bail. Reacting to her release, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said justice was served. 'This is a case of police atrocities on an innocent young woman for using her freedom of speech and expression. This is yet another example of police eagerness to please their political masters,' Mr. Adhikari said in a post on X. On May 15, a case was lodged against her at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata under several sections, including those pertaining to malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. This came after she posted a video on social media and made communal comments and made claims about Operation Sindoor which the Kolkata Police noted as 'hate speech' and asked people not to confuse that with 'freedom of speech'. She did this as a reaction to the Pahalgam attack which left at least 26 people dead in Jammu and Kashmir. Ms. Panoli had deleted the video the same day and tendered an unconditional apology on social media.

Invite tenders for Polavaram–Banakacherla project by June-end, CM tells Water Resources Dept.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu instructed the officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD) to undertake the Polavaram–Banakacherla and other irrigation projects under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and finalise the tenders by the end of this month while securing forest and environmental clearances in a time-bound manner. Addressing a review meeting at the Secretariat near here on Friday, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the officials should take steps for land acquisition for the Polavaram–Banakacherla project and that it would be undertaken by the Jal Harathi Corporation. Proposals for funding were sent to the Central government. Out of the total project cost of ₹81,900 crore, a sum of ₹40,950 crore would be sought as an EAP (External Aided Project) loan, and ₹16,380 crore as grants from the Central government. The State would mobilise ₹16,380 crore under HAM and contribute ₹8,190 crore as equity. POLAVARAM The Chief Minister wanted the diaphragm wall of the Polavaram project to be completed by the end of December 2025 and noted that the overall civil works were completed to the extent of 81.70%, of which a measly progress of 3.84% was achieved under the YSR Congress Party rule. Farming Further, Mr. Naidu told the officials to take immediate steps to commence agricultural activities in the Krishna and Godavari deltas and called for focus on increasing the groundwater levels, filling reservoirs, and efficient utilisation of water resources. He expressed dissatisfaction over the non-functioning of physio meters and AWS (Automatic Weather Station) sensors in some parts of the State and ordered that a sum of ₹30 crore be sanctioned immediately for purchasing new equipment. Water audit He stressed the need for scientific water auditing, and told the officials to issue district-level bulletins containing details of groundwater levels and water availability in the river basins. He suggested that ways to bring the Sileru river water to the Krishna delta be explored, and ordered that the Veligonda Stage - I works should be completed by June, 2026. Budameru works At a media briefing, Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu said the Chief Minister sought an action plan to curb the menace of flooding of Vijayawada city by the Budameru rivulet, which included widening the discharge capacity of its diversion channel from the present 17,500 cusecs to 37,500 cusecs. Special Chief Secretaries G. Sai Prasad (Water Resources) and B. Rajasekhar (Agriculture), Chief Commissioner of Land Administration G. Jaya Lakshmi and other senior officials were present.
