Mom of 3 POV: Being a Parent Makes Me a Better Person but a Worse Friend
Suddenly, my recycling bin was always full, I inspected food labels for things like palm oil and carbon footprint, and I am currently researching the logistics of contributing to the neighborhood compost. Should I have been doing those things anyway? Of course. But something about having children laser focused my sense of responsibility. Their world became the world.
And I'm not just thinking about the planet. I'm also more cognizant of being kind and decent to others. Pre-kids, I might have snapped when someone cut me off on the highway. But knowing that those little ears in the backseat are absorbing every word I say, I practice empathy instead ('Maybe they're just in a rush…').
But if parenting has made me better in some ways, it's also made me worse—especially in one area I never anticipated: friendship.
There's a lot of talk about how your relationship with your partner changes after kids, but what about with your friends?
Before I had children, I talked to my friends all the time. Text threads, spontaneous calls, meetups after work… maintaining connection was easy. Now, even when I miraculously find a spare 30 minutes, I rarely use it to reach out. Why? Because I've convinced myself it will take too much energy. (Spoiler: It won't.)
And even when I do talk to friends, I often find myself mostly talking about my kids! I hear myself yammering on about sleep schedules and soccer signups and I can't help but wonder: Who is this person? Where did the interesting parts of me go?
I don't have a perfect solution to this dilemma. But I've started sticking to a few self-imposed rules to help me be a slightly better friend (even if it takes me three days to respond to a text).
Show up for the big stuff. You may go weeks without talking, but if your best friend's mom is sick or their marriage is falling apart, be there. When my best friend needed me during a family crisis, I dropped everything and showed up. And guess what? My kids were fine. She needed me more.
Remember this is a season. Like all parenting phases, this one is temporary. Real friends will still be there when it gets easier. And it will get easier.
Try the 'First Sunday Rule.' On the first Sunday of each month, I make a point to reach out to someone I've lost touch with. No need for an hour-long catch up. In fact, it can be as simple as a 'thinking of you' text. Just a little something to keep the thread from completely unraveling.
Fill your own cup. It's a cliche but it's true—you can't give to others when you're running on empty. I may not have the luxury of a full self-care day but at least for me, a little sleep, hydration and maybe a hot (uninterrupted!) shower can go a long way.
The truth is that parenting has made me a better person. I'm more empathetic and intentional after having kids. But it's also made me more distracted and less available to my friends. I'm learning to accept both of these realities… and trying to show up anyway.

CP NewsAlert: Weston family wants to buy Hudson's Bay charter, donate it to museum
TORONTO — The Canadian Museum of History says the Weston family wants to buy the royal charter that formed Hudson's Bay 355 years ago and donate it to the Quebec institution. MARA's Power Efficiency and Global Expansion Keep It Ahead Of Peers: Analyst
MARA Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:MARA) shares are trading higher on Wednesday. The crypto-firm reported Tuesday second-quarter revenue of $238.5 million, beating analyst estimates of $218.45 million. The Bitcoin mining company reported second-quarter earnings of $1.84 per share, beating analyst estimates of 69 cents per Reaction To Earnings H.C. Wainwright: Analyst Kevin Dede reiterated the Buy rating, with a price forecast of $28. According to Dede, Bitcoin's lower pricing on March 31 versus December 31 resulted in a non-cash fair value adjustment of roughly $510 million, which severely impacted MARA's earnings per share. Dede emphasizes that, philosophically, MARA has not altered its core strategy. The analyst notes that recent commentary reaffirms the company's continued focus on power conversion technology—whether through bitcoin mining or heat generation—with a consistent push to drive energy costs toward zero. This is a theme the analyst has reiterated many times in prior coverage. The analyst notes that revisiting this strategy is useful for contrasting MARA's approach with that of peers who are slowly or rapidly shifting their mining focus toward high-performance computing (HPC). Dede also highlights progress on MARA's two-phase immersion cooling (2PIC) initiative, which is now in a 30MW pilot phase aimed at refining the design. The analyst notes that a cold-plate variant of the system is under development. While this version is still based on two-phase cooling, it follows the cold-plate format, which Dede sees as aligning with what's emerging as the industry standard for HPC systems. The analyst adds that MARA's shift in this direction may involve collaborations with large compute OEMs, potentially including firms like Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:DELL) or NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA). Dede indicates that the FY25 sales estimate for MARA has been revised downward to $822.5 million, a reduction from the earlier projection of $895.9 million. Rosenblatt: Analyst Chris Brendler reiterated the Buy rating with a price forecast of $20. Brendler notes that while some of the recent upside from bitcoin was partially offset by increased hash costs, mining expenses are expected to improve in the second half of FY25. The analyst points to the addition of new low-cost sites and better fleet efficiency as key drivers behind this anticipated cost reduction. Brendler adds that the company's ongoing focus on global expansion is likely to contribute to further margin gains. In his view, these efforts place MARA in a strong position to maintain its leadership in the sector, particularly as several competitors begin shifting their attention toward high-performance computing (HPC). Tigers beat Diamondbacks 7-2, winning 4th straight after a 1-12 slump
DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Chris Paddack threw six solid innings in his Detroit debut and the Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on Wednesday. The AL Central-leading Tigers have won four straight games, coming off a 1-12 slump that spanned before and after the All-Star Game. Detroit may make moves before the trade deadline on Thursday to bolster its chances winning the franchise's first World Series since 1984. Arizona has lost five straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season. Paddack (4-10) gave up only one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks, two days after the right-hander was acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Twins. Ryne Nelson (6-3) allowed four runs — one earned — on six hits. Kyle Backhus followed and gave up three runs on four hits, retiring only two batters. Carpenter snapped a scoreless tie with a two-out triple in the third inning, scoring Colt Keith after his second single of the game. Jake Rogers hit a two-run home run in a three-run sixth inning, giving the Tigers a six-run cushion that was comfortable against the offensively challenged Diamondbacks. Arizona All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez, a potential trade target, was 1 for 4 at the plate. Suarez returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's game because he was hit on the right hand by a pitch the previous night. Key moment Carpenter's two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Detroit a 4-1 lead. Key stat Paddack gave up only one run in his second straight start. Up next Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (9-6, 3.22) is the team's probable pitcher Friday night on the road against the Athletics. Detroit plays at Philadelphia on Friday night with Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (6-10, 4.51) and Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (8-4, 2.59) expected to pitch. ___ AP MLB:
