The offshore renewable energy sector offers Canada a once-in-a-generation economic opportunity, with the global offshore wind market expected to draw $1 trillion in investments by 2040. Boasting the world's longest coastlines, exceptional wind resources and a highly skilled labour pool, Atlantic Canada is ideally situated to capitalize on this extraordinary opportunity for economic growth and job creation.
Today, the Government of Canada, in partnership with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, is pleased to announce the coming into force of legislation to enable the development of offshore renewable energy in Newfoundland and Labrador. This follows the passage of the federal Bill C-49 in October 2024 and Newfoundland and Labrador's mirror legislation, Bill 90, in March 2025.
The Government of Canada is committed to its strong history of joint management with the Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia and will work together with them to unlock the enormous potential of offshore renewable energy collaboratively and responsibly.
This is part of the federal government's plan to make Canada an energy superpower and build the strongest economy in the G7.

New Tecumseth is about to look a lot greener. On Monday, the town announced plans to enhance its natural landscape through $1.15 million in funding provided by the Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund. (FCM's GMF) This investment is part of a broader $16.9 million national commitment to grow greener communities and improve well-being through strategic tree planting projects. 'The support from our federal partners and FCM empowers us to move forward on a vision for a greener, more connected future,' said Town of New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross. Town officials say this is a long-term goal of theirs: growing canopy coverage from 21 per cent to 30 per cent while promoting biodiversity, shade equity, and environmental health throughout the municipality. 'Planting trees is an investment in the resilience of our communities. This initiative demonstrates how local leadership can spark national progress, delivering lasting benefits for Canadians and the environment.' The Green Municipal Fund's Growing Canada's Community Canopies is a $291M initiative, coming to an end in 2031, it is funded by the Government of Canada and delivered by the FCM.

Canada strengthens global leadership in medical isotope production
Government achieves new milestone in partnership with Bruce Power and First Nation on producing cancer-fighting medical isotopes TIVERTON, ON, Aug. 19, 2025 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is investing in Canada's nuclear, biomanufacturing and life sciences sectors to strengthen Canada's position as a global leader in nuclear medicine innovation. These investments are bolstering domestic supply chains to ensure Canadians have access to vital diagnostics and therapeutic treatments. Today, the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, announced the next phase of an ambitious medical isotope production project at the Bruce Power nuclear plant facility in Tiverton, Ontario. This next phase will see the installation of a second isotope production system (IPS) at Bruce Power's CANDU Unit 6 reactor, which will allow for a significant increase in the plant's ability to produce the medical isotope lutetium-177, used in targeted cancer therapies. The project is receiving funding through the Canadian Medical Isotope Ecosystem (CMIE), which was established in 2023 with an investment of up to $35 million over five years through the Government of Canada's Strategic Innovation Fund, with the goal of spurring the development and commercialization of medical isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals in Canada. The CMIE directs project funding that supports collaborative research and development initiatives focused on medical isotopes, with the goal of creating and commercializing innovative treatments in the health care sector while also securing the domestic production of medical isotopes. Since March 2020, the government has invested more than $2.5 billion in 43 projects in the biomanufacturing, vaccine and therapeutics ecosystem. The Government of Canada's support for the CMIE is a critical aspect of this investment, bolstering Canada's historical leadership in medical isotope production. The market for medical isotopes worldwide is increasing and is expected to reach up to US$33 billion by 2031. The project expansion announced today helps to ensure that Canada will maintain a steady domestic supply as well as sustain and expand export capabilities to global markets. With its innovative IPS technology, Bruce Power is the first commercial nuclear reactor in the world to produce lutetium-177, supplying large quantities of life-saving medical isotopes while simultaneously generating safe, clean and reliable electricity. This helps advance Canada's role as both an energy and a medical isotope superpower. The Government of Canada is proud to partner with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) and Bruce Power to produce, advance and market new medical isotopes in support of the global fight against cancer. Lutetium-177 is a medical isotope used in targeted radionuclide therapy for certain cancers, specifically neuroendocrine tumours and prostate cancer. Radionuclide therapies show incredible promise for cancer treatment due to their ability to deliver targeted doses of radiation directly to cancer cells while minimizing potential side effects on healthy cells. By producing these critical resources domestically, Canada will be positioned to take advantage of the ever-growing global market for medical isotopes. Federal government spending $20M on Stratford, P.E.I., affordable housing
More affordable housing is being built in Stratford, P.E.I., through the Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP). The Government of Canada announced Tuesday it is investing more than $20 million into the construction of 60 housing units. The units will be located at 13 Irving Ave., near schools, grocery stores, doctors' offices and other amenities in the community. 'Your new federal government is committed to driving housing supply to bring down costs. This project will create more much-needed rental homes for the people living and working in Stratford,' said Gregor Robertson, minister of Housing and Infrastructure and minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. 'It's an example of what's possible when government and the private sector work together. It's also another step forward in our bold, ambitious plan to build Canada strong.' As of March 2025, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) says it has committed $23.35 billion in loans through the ACLP to build more than 59,000 rental homes across the country. 'CMHC and their dedication to housing supply via the ACLP Loan program eases developers' barriers to provide affordable housing amid rising demand from population and economic growth.
