Cklamovski backs young stars to shine for Malaysia after senior camp stint

KUALA LUMPUR: National coach Peter Cklamovski assured that the five young players released from the Harimau Malaya camp remain key to his long-term plans, as focus shifts to Thursday's friendly against Cape Verde at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras.
The Australian confirmed that Aiman Hakimi Othman (20), Alif Ahmad (22), Shafizan Arshad (20), Haykal Danish Haizon (20) and Abu Khalil (20) have returned to their respective teams after gaining valuable experience in the senior camp in Johor Baru.
Cklamovski said the quintet are being groomed for the future and are likely to play crucial roles in the national youth team's campaigns at the AFF Under-23 Championship (July 15-31) and the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup qualifiers (Sept 1-9).
"We take it as a positive. I spoke to them after training," said Cklamovski.
"They learnt a lot from this week - the environment, the players, our sessions. The benefit is that they can take that with them to improve in the long term."
The Australian was impressed with the youngsters' attitude and adaptability.
"They've done outstandingly well. They've trained well - impressive young talents, which I knew they were - but they adapted to our intensity," he said.
"That's something they mentioned to me too, that the intensity was much higher than expected. But they responded well.
"I believe in them, and I look forward to watching all the Under-23 players progress and push hard to earn senior team spots."
Cklamovski explained that the decision to release the players was due to high competition for places and his commitment to selecting based on form and professionalism.
"I select teams and squads based on performance, mentality, professionalism and work ethic. If they continue to give their best and perform at their highest level, there's no reason they won't be called up again."
Harimau Malaya will face world No 72 Cape Verde, a team with several European-based players, in Thursday's friendly, followed by a second match behind closed doors at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3.
"We want to play against a tough opponent. Cape Verde are world-class and have great players from Europe.

Harimau Malaya's draw against Cape Verde boosts team confidence ahead of Vietnam clash, says Hannah Yeoh

SEREMBAN, May 31 — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has described Harimau Malaya's 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in a Tier 1 international friendly on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur as a positive development for the national team. She said the result, achieved against a team ranked 72nd in the world, will help build the team's confidence ahead of their crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match against Vietnam on June 10. 'I hope every match will provide new confidence for our players, especially as they prepare to face Vietnam,' she told reporters at the 14th National Junior Wushu Championship here last night. The event was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and featured nearly 500 exponents from 17 teams nationwide. Malaysia will face Cape Verde again in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 3) as part of preparations for the qualifier. Hannah also urged fans to turn out in full force to support Harimau Malaya, stressing that the energy and chants from the Ultras can significantly lift the players' spirit. 'The cheers from fans really matter. The Ultras' songs and chants play a big role in motivating the team,' she said, citing the difference in atmosphere during a recent Manchester United-Asean All-Stars match without Ultras. She expressed hope the national squad can improve their ranking under the new head coach, with the support of government and corporate sponsorship. On the junior wushu championship, Hannah said her ministry has channelled RM165,000 through the Sports Matching Grant to support the five-day event. She said wushu has now been reclassified as a sport in schools to align with the ministry's long-term athlete development plan, especially in preparation for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. — Bernama

Inzaghi eyes glory as Inter face PSG in Champions League final

MUNICH: Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi believes his side's superb run to the Champions League final can give them the confidence needed to get the better of a much-fancied Paris Saint-Germain team in Saturday's showdown in Munich. "It is always hugely exciting before every Champions League match, and especially when it is the final. We fully deserve to be here because we have shown huge desire right from our very first match in Manchester," Inzaghi told reporters at the Allianz Arena, where the final will be played. Inter's European campaign began with a 0-0 draw away to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in September, in a rematch with the team that beat them narrowly in the 2023 final in Istanbul. The Nerazzurri finished fourth in the 36-team league phase, losing just once and conceding only one goal in eight matches. They then beat Feyenoord in the last 16 before seeing off two of the tournament favourites, Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and Barcelona in an epic last-four tie. "These have been great opponents, so our place here is merited even though we know we still have to take the last step, which is the most important one," added Inzaghi, who brushed off questions about his future amid speculation he could depart following the final. It is likely that seven of the players who started the final against City two years ago will again line up for Inter at kick-off against a youthful PSG, with the Italian team's extra experience something that could help them. "Every game is different, and finals can be decided by key moments," he said ahead of the clash with the French side who have, like City, become one of the wealthiest superpowers in the European game over the last decade. "Two years ago we were not the favourites but we went toe to toe with City on the pitch and maybe we could have deserved more." One of the grand old names of the European game, Inter will now have another chance to win their fourth title, following victories in 1964, 1965 and 2010. However, they must pick themselves up from the disappointment of losing out to Napoli for the Serie A crown last weekend. "The mental side of the game is important. The players have worked very hard and of course we have put that domestic disappointment to one side," said Inzaghi, who has a fully fit squad to choose from.
