Harimau Malaya's draw against Cape Verde boosts team confidence ahead of Vietnam clash, says Hannah Yeoh
SEREMBAN, May 31 — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has described Harimau Malaya's 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in a Tier 1 international friendly on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur as a positive development for the national team.
She said the result, achieved against a team ranked 72nd in the world, will help build the team's confidence ahead of their crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match against Vietnam on June 10.
'I hope every match will provide new confidence for our players, especially as they prepare to face Vietnam,' she told reporters at the 14th National Junior Wushu Championship here last night.
The event was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and featured nearly 500 exponents from 17 teams nationwide.
Malaysia will face Cape Verde again in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 3) as part of preparations for the qualifier.
Hannah also urged fans to turn out in full force to support Harimau Malaya, stressing that the energy and chants from the Ultras can significantly lift the players' spirit.
'The cheers from fans really matter. The Ultras' songs and chants play a big role in motivating the team,' she said, citing the difference in atmosphere during a recent Manchester United-Asean All-Stars match without Ultras.
She expressed hope the national squad can improve their ranking under the new head coach, with the support of government and corporate sponsorship.
On the junior wushu championship, Hannah said her ministry has channelled RM165,000 through the Sports Matching Grant to support the five-day event.
She said wushu has now been reclassified as a sport in schools to align with the ministry's long-term athlete development plan, especially in preparation for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. — Bernama

Company director loses RM137,200 in fake govt tender scam in Kemaman
CHUKAI, June 1 — A company director lost RM137,200 after falling victim to a syndicate offering a fictitious government tender. Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the 52-year-old man was contacted via WhatsApp on May 13 by someone posing as a representative of a public university in Kelantan, offering a tender to supply 20 air-conditioning units and a power generator. 'To gain the victim's trust, the suspect sent four purchase orders allegedly issued by the secretary-general of the Higher Education Ministry, along with contact details of a supposed supplier,' he said in a statement today. The victim believed the offer and made seven bank transfers to an account under the name Gertrude Chee over a five-day period starting May 27. He later discovered the tender was a scam. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Police urge the public to verify any tender offers with the relevant authorities before making financial transactions. — Bernama

Malaysia say 'no friendly' to Indonesia
KUALA LUMPUR: For a change, the national football team get to say no to others. For years, Malaysia found it hard to get teams to play international friendlies against them due to the country's low world ranking. But this time, the FA of Malaysia (FAM) has reportedly turned down an invitation from the Indonesia FA (PSSI). Indonesian media reported PSSI president Erick Thohir as saying that their proposal to have a friendly with Harimau Malaya in September was turned down by FAM. "We have long missed playing against Malaysia. One opportunity was during the Fifa window in September. We extended an invitation to Malaysia. "However, perhaps the Malaysia senior team have other considerations as they are currently in the process of strengthening the squad," said Erick. He said fans, too, are eager to see a clash between these Southeast Asian rivals, who have not faced each other for some time. Their last meeting was four years ago with Indonesia beating Malaysia 4-1 in an AFF Cup match. FAM secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman confirmed that Malaysia had rejected the PSSI invitation as national head coach Peter Cklamovski has other plans for Harimau Malaya.
