Palestine Action to be banned after RAF base break in
The home secretary will move to proscribe Palestine Action group in the coming weeks, effectively branding them as a terrorist organisation, the BBC understands.
Yvette Cooper is preparing a written statement before Parliament on Monday - which if passed will make becoming a member of the group illegal.
The decision comes as a security review begins at military bases across the UK, after pro-Palestinian activists broke into RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and sprayed two military planes with red paint.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the action as "disgraceful," describing it as an "act of vandalism".
South East counter terrorism police confirmed its specialist officers were investigating the incident alongside Thames Valley Police and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Counter-terrorism police added the incident happened in the early hours of Friday and that enquiries were "ongoing to establish the exact circumstances".
Footage posted online by Palestine Action on Friday showed two people inside the Oxfordshire airbase in darkness, with one riding on a scooter up to an Airbus Voyager and spraying paint into its jet engine.
After sharing the footage, a Palestine Action spokesperson said: "Despite publicly condemning the Israeli government, Britain continues to send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel US and Israeli fighter jets."
The group claimed its activists had evaded security and had put the air-to-air refuelling tankers "out of service".
However RAF engineers have been assessing the damage, with a defence source earlier telling the BBC that they did not expect the incident would affect operations.
Thames Valley Police earlier said it had received a report about people gaining access to the base and causing criminal damage.
"Inquiries are ongoing to locate and arrest those responsible," the force said.
It is understood this incident was not the first time the group has targeted military sites.
RAF Brize Norton serves as the hub for UK strategic air transport and refuelling, including flights to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. The air force has conducted reconnaissance flights over Gaza out of the Cyprus base.

Middle East situation ‘perilous', says Lammy amid calls for more talks
The situation in the Middle East is 'perilous', the Foreign Secretary said as he urged Iran to negotiate with the US. David Lammy flew from Washington to Geneva on Friday to meet Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi alongside his French and German counterparts as the UK continued to press for a diplomatic solution to the Middle East crisis. The talks followed US President Donald Trump's announcement that he would delay a decision on joining Israeli strikes against Iran for up to two weeks. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Lammy told reporters: 'It is still clear to me, as President Trump indicated yesterday, that there is a window of within two weeks where we can see a diplomatic solution.' Urging Iran to 'take that off ramp' and talk to the Americans, he said: 'We have a window of time. This is perilous and deadly serious.' He added that the US and Europe were pushing for Iran to agree to zero enrichment of uranium as a 'starting point' for negotiations. But Mr Araghchi said Iran would not negotiate with the US as long as Israel continued to carry out airstrikes against the country, and insisted his country's nuclear programme was entirely peaceful. Both sides continued to exchange fire on Friday, with Iranian missiles targeting the city of Haifa while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tel Aviv's military operation would continue 'for as long as it takes'. Meanwhile, the UK Government has announced it will use charter flights to evacuate Britons stranded in Israel once the country's airspace reopens. Mr Lammy said work is under way to provide the flights 'based on levels of demand' from UK citizens who want to leave the region. The move follows criticism of the Foreign Office's initial response, which saw family members of embassy staff evacuated while UK citizens were not advised to leave and told to follow local guidance. The Government said the move to temporarily withdraw family members had been a 'precautionary measure'. On Friday, the Foreign Office announced that UK staff had also been evacuated from Iran, with the embassy continuing to operate remotely. But the Government continues to advise British nationals in the region to follow local advice, rather than urging them to leave. The US evacuated 79 staff and families from the embassy in Israel on Friday local time, according to the Associated Press.

NEW YORK (PIX11)– For the first time since he was detained by immigration officials earlier this week, Comptroller and candidate for mayor Brad Lander was back at immigration court to try and help immigrants from being deported. After observing more detentions by ICE, a clearly frustrated Lander said more needs to be done to quote gum up the works. 'It's time for people to stand up and say we are not going to allow the deportation machine without due process,' Lander said. 'We are going to have to, in the tradition of nonviolent protest, find more and better ways not to allow our democracy to be eroded.' More Local News Lander is also calling on former governor Andrew Cuomo to instruct his Super PAC to back down from repeated attack against Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani said he has been in touch with the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force after repeated Islamophobic threats called into his government office, including a recent car bomb threat. 'If you design mailers that artificially lengthen and darken my beard, if you blanket the airwaves with language of me being a radical, if you put me in [traditional Islamic clothing] instead of a suit, it is not a surprise to see the threats that come,' Mamdani said. Mamdani was outside the NYC Campaign Finance Board, where he was petitioning for a last-minute rule change that would allow him to spend more donor money, due to the constant barrage of Cuomo Super PAC ads. He said Cuomo is trying to 'buy the election.' A spokeswoman for the Cuomo campaign says the former governor cannot legally direct a Super PAC to do anything. She said Momani is simply trying to change the subject from a discussion of antisemitism: 'Mr. Mamdani has a super PAC and a fringe party financially supporting his candidacy and smearing Governor Cuomo, and has been, potentially illegally, coordinating with other candidates to attack Governor Cuomo.
