Russian rocket attack kills two in Ukraine's Sumy

The Sun2 days ago

KYIV: A Russian rocket attack on the northeastern city of Sumy killed two people on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said, the latest in a series of escalating attacks on the border region.
The city has come under intense Russian bombardment as Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his troops to create a 'buffer zone' inside the Sumy region, which borders Russia.
Russia fired five rockets from an MLRS system on the city at around 09:00 a.m. (0600 GMT), the head of the city administration Oleg Grygorov said on social media.
'Unfortunately two people were killed,' and 20 more wounded, he said.
'The hits damaged a medical facility, cars and houses,' he added.
The regional prosecutor's office posted photos showing burned out cars on a road in the city centre after the attack.
Sumy is around 30 kilometres from the Russian border, and was a vital logistics hub for Ukraine's months-long offensive into Russia's Kursk region.
Attacks on the city have escalated since Russia said in April it had fully recaptured the Kursk region.
More than 30 were killed there in a Russian ballistic missile strike on the city centre in April, one of the deadliest single attacks of the three-year war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that Russia was amassing some 50,000 troops for an offensive on the region.
A separate Russian drone attack on Kharkiv killed one person, the prosecutor's office said, while the cities of Odesa and Chernigiv were also hit in overnight attacks.

Retired nurse loses over RM111,000 in phone scam

KUANTAN: A retired nurse lost more than RM111,000 after falling victim to a phone scam involving individuals impersonating police officers and personnel from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 72-year-old victim received a call on May 29 from an individual claiming to be a representative of the MCMC. The caller alleged that a money laundering suspect had deposited RM210,000 into her bank account. The call was then transferred to another individual posing as 'Inspector Zamri' from the Pahang contingent police headquarters, who instructed the victim to surrender all her bank cards and warned her not to inform anyone about the matter. "The victim, as instructed, placed her bank card complete with the PIN, in a package outside her house for a purported police officer from the Bentong district police headquarters to collect,' he said in a statement on Thursday (June 5). He added that the victim realised she had been scammed after checking her bank account and discovering that her savings of RM111,044.64 had been withdrawn. Yahaya advised members of the public who receive suspicious calls to immediately verify the information with the police or relevant government agencies to avoid falling victim to fraud. "The public must stay informed about the latest online scam tactics, as criminal modus operandi continue to evolve and become more sophisticated with technological advancements,' he said. - Bernama

Fishing too close to shore: Vessel and crew seized

Fishing too close to shore: Vessel and crew seized Kota Kinabalu: A fishing vessel operating too close to shore was seized for breaching maritime regulations, along with its catch of almost a tonne. Sabah Maritime Director First Adm Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali said its captain and five crew members, all Indonesians, were also detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Advertisement He said in the June 2 (Monday) raid, MMEA personnel were conducting patrols when they saw the vessel operating close to Tanjung Tembungo, near here. SPONSORED CONTENT Khairulanuar said the suspects were detained while the vessel and its catch, worth an estimated RM45,000, were confiscated and brought back to base for investigations under the Fisheries Act 1985. He said fishing too close to shore disrupted the livelihood of local fishermen and threatened marine ecosystems by destroying corals and the seabed. Advertisement He said the MMEA would step up patrols and anti-crime operations at sea. He urged the public to report any suspicious activities at sea to the Sabah Maritime direct line at 088-270165, or the 999 emergency number.
