SHAH ALAM: Crop and livestock supplies nationwide remain stable despite the ongoing hot and dry weather caused by the Southwest Monsoon, says the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM).
Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the ministry has not received any major complaints or reports of serious supply disruptions.
There have been some complaints, but they are isolated and weather-related, whether due to floods or drought, he added.
"Overall, disruptions are minimal and the situation remains under control," he told reporters after officiating the Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) @KPKM carnival here Saturday (June 28).
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) earlier reported that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10, is expected to last until September.
Separately, Mohamad said the coconut industry holds strong potential to become a key contributor to the national economy, similar to pineapples.
He noted rising demand for both mature coconuts, which are being actively cultivated in Sabah, and young coconuts, especially from China.
"The crop is expected to generate impressive export value, just like pineapples, which have surpassed RM1bil in sales," he said.
Mohamad had previously praised the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for driving national production and export growth in the sector. - Bernama Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel for breaking news alerts and key updates!

Frequent rain and thunderstorms forecast in Terengganu this week

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather advisory for Terengganu, forecasting frequent rain and thunderstorms from Sunday until Saturday. The department urged the public to stay updated on weather conditions, particularly those involved in maritime activities. Rosli Zakaria, director of MetMalaysia Terengganu, stated that the Southwest Monsoon season, which typically lasts until September or October, will bring unpredictable weather to the east coast. 'This week, Terengganu can expect thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings, accompanied by strong winds and high waves along coastal areas,' he said. He advised caution, especially for those participating in the ongoing squid jiggling season, as sudden weather changes could pose risks. 'We encourage everyone to check forecasts via the MetMalaysia website, myCuaca app, or hotline 1-300-22-1638 before heading out,' Rosli added. In a related incident, three individuals, including two young children, tragically lost their lives when a boat capsized near Pulau Perhentian during a storm late last night. The vessel, carrying 15 passengers, sank amid heavy rain and rough seas.
