‘Running on ventilator': Congress slams Nitish Kumar government after minor rape victim dies in state-run hospital
The Congress came down heavily on the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government after a 10-year-old rape survivor died at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday, saying that the administration is 'running on ventilator'.
According to a report from the news agency ANI, the girl was initially under treatment at the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur on May 26. She had severe neck and internal injuries.
The PMCH in-charge superintendent, Dr Abhijit Singh, told the news agency, "After she arrived here, the doctor examined her in the ambulance. She was taken to the ICU, and doctors from all departments treated her for the entire night."
The minor girl's uncle Virendra Paswan alleged that the accused lured the 10-year-old by offering her chocolate near her aunt's house and then took her to a maize field where he raped her.
"The boy has been arrested. He strangled the girl and slit her throat. We called 112," he said.
Additionally, Paswan has alleged negligence on the part of the hospital administration and doctors, saying that she was kept in the ambulance for two hours before being admitted to the hospital.
"The doctors referred us to Patna, but we didn't like it there either. It's not a good hospital. Yesterday, we came, and we waited for three hours in an ambulance. When everyone started creating a ruckus, they admitted her at 4 o'clock. There was no convenience for anything. The child was uneasy and started crying at night. The doctors got upset and gave sleeping medicine to the child all night long, and at eight o'clock in the morning, she died," Paswan told the news agency ANI.
These allegations have been denied by Dr Singh. "If such an incident takes place with anyone, the family will make allegations of negligence. We actively treated her right after we learned about this case. The doctor examined her in the ambulance, and then she was admitted."
Further, the minor victim's uncle alleged that he had to spend ₹25,000 at the hospital despite it being a government institution.
"PMCH hospital is negligent. This hospital means that anyone who comes will become a dead body. Even the doctor is negligent. Yesterday morning, they said that everything would be taken care of at a government hospital, but they take money to give blood; no money means no blood. Here we spent ₹25,000," he said.
Paswan added that if one gives blood, then they will get blood, otherwise, they won't. The hospital administration is negligent, he reiterated.
The incident has drawn the ire of Congress, whose party leader Aditya Paswan demanded action against the hospital administration and the government.
Aditya blamed the NDA-led Bihar government for the negligence of the doctors at PMCH and demanded that the superintendent of the hospital be suspended immediately. He also called for the resignation of the state health minister.
"The Bihar government is running on ventilators, and this is just a pretence that a world-class hospital is being built.. If this were the case, it would not have happened to that girl, a Dalit; whether Dalit or poor, people are equal. If someone says you will have to struggle for one hour to admit the girl, it is a shame," he added.
Citing that the girl was made to wait in the ambulance for over two hours, Aditya Paswan said, "There is a system where there is no cost to the life of a Dalit, then there is no price for the life of the poor, then there is not point in staying with such a government".
The Bihar spokesperson for Congress told news agency ANI," When we met the superintendent there, he said that he had to refer to Patna. We asked for a reference to AIIMS, which has better facilities, but for some reason, he referred us to the PMCH. After arriving at PMCH, the girl was lying in the ambulance for about two and a half hours."
"Following that, we came with the state president. I brought Mr Rajesh Ram with me... We met the superintendent. After struggling for one hour, the girl was taken away. If the girl had been admitted on time, then today the girl would not have died," he added.

A controversy that could well have been avoided
For reasons fair or foul, there have been many skirmishes and flashpoints between the two states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over nearly seven decades since both were carved out as independent states. While justifications from both sides abound for each of the incidents that stirred passions, created riotous situations and severely created law and order problems in both the neighbouring zones, there seems to be no stopping fresh troubles that seem to be breaking out ad nauseam. Ever since Tamil top star Kamal Haasan, known for his typical intellectual surmises on all things under the sun said 'Kannada is born out of Tamil' at a function in Chennai, it set off a furore in Karnataka. Like a typical cinema narrative, the usual villains did the usual things and kept the political temperature up. The hero, however, much like the film 'Thug Life' in which he is seen endorsing in many parts of the world, refused to accept that he had overstepped in this case and could have well been discreet with such matters in public domain. Quite clearly, all the players in this drama know that Haasan is using the oldest trick in the book of any publicity being good publicity in the cinema circles. With Tamil cinema market being the biggest across south India, with almost all states running its films in many prominent cities of the peninsula, it is incomprehensible why the Chennai actor refused to see reason. The latest is that the film is not likely to get a release in Karnataka, the biggest market after Tamil Nadu. Haasan has informed the High Court that he would not release his film on the earlier announced date for his Kannada fans to watch him in action. Interestingly, what Judge Nagaprasanna said, while adjourning the case, deserves mention. As a news agency report wrote: 'The judge further questioned Haasan's authority to make such claims, asking, 'Are you a historian or a linguist to make such a statement? No language is born out of another.' He added, 'A single apology could have resolved the situation.' Justice Nagaprasanna stressed the importance of respecting cultural sensitivities and remarked, 'Water, land, and language — Jala, Nela, Bashe — are sacred to the people'. Adding further, the judge had pointed out that an illustrious person like C. Rajagopalachari had issued a similar statement in 1950 about the origins of the Kannada language and later apologised following protests, even though there was no commercial motive. 'If such a big person can apologise, and a similar statement has been issued after 75 years, and there is a commercial motive...' the court observed. Surely, the matter is not going to end here. If Haasan has won the battle for the moment, by the time the case comes up for hearing again a week from now, the public would know who has won the war. Not to be missed is the cool-headed handling of the controversy by the Congress government, which has flayed the hero for his observations, but in an even-tempered tone kept the socio- political pot from boiling over. After all, there is a hyperactive BJP waiting and watching.

Great sympathy and understanding in UK for what India has gone through due to cross-border terrorism: Indian envoy Doraiswami
London [UK], June 4 (ANI): India's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vikram Doraiswami, has said that there is great sympathy and understanding in the UK for what India has suffered due to cross-border terrorism that has emanated from Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled territory. In an interview with ANI, Doraiswami emphasised that India's ties with the UK have gained traction. The UK's approach to challenges that have persisted in South Asia has been much more understanding of India's concerns and more willing to respect that these problems need to be solved by India and Pakistan. Responding to questions about the all-party Indian delegation's meetings in the UK, Doraiswami said, 'I don't want to put words into either our parliamentarians' mouths or those of our British friends, but I think there was a great deal of receptivity to the message. There is great sympathy and understanding in the UK for what India has gone through in terms of our long and painful journey with cross-border terrorism that has emanated from Pakistan-controlled territory and the state of Pakistan. There is a great sense of understanding of the anger and hurt in India that this scourge just doesn't go away.' 'That said, of course, the UK has its own position. It's a sovereign government. It will take its own decisions, but in the last decade and more, we see a steady evolution as our relationship with the UK has gained weight, traction, and strategic dimensions. The UK's approach to challenges that have long persisted in South Asia has been much more understanding of our concerns, much more willing to respect the fact that these are problems that have to be solved by India and Pakistan and indeed all other problems in the region by the region. And that India's rise is, in broader terms, the greatest benefit of the Indo-Pacific region and the world as a whole. So, that sense comes through to all our parliamentarians,' he added. "Insulted India, armed forces...": BJP MP Sambit Patra slams Rahul Gandhi over Operation Sindoor remarks
New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sambit Patra launched a sharp attack on Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on India's retaliatory military action against Pakistan and Operation Sindoor, accusing him of 'insulting the country and its armed forces.' The BJP MP said Rahul Gandhi's speech in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday does not befit any 'civilised politician or any leader of the opposition.' Sharing a self-made video on X, Sambit Patra said, 'Today, during his speech in Madhya Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi has not only insulted Operation Sindoor but also the Indian Army and the country. The way Rahul Gandhi spoke about Operation Sindoor does not befit any civilised politician, any leader of the opposition or any politician. This kind of politician, who uses words like 'surrender' for his motherland, is not fit for the country.' 'The terrorist attack of Pahalgam was avenged by entering a nuclear-powered country, nine terrorist hideouts were destroyed, more than 100 terrorists were killed, and when retaliation took place, 11 airbases of Pakistan were destroyed. All this is on record, there is evidence... India has never surrendered to terrorism,' he added. Patra further said, 'When there was a logjam between India and China over Doklam, Rahul Gandhi's entire family was caught spying against India...' This comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP-led government on Tuesday over allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor.
