Fair price shops to function through 37 Annapurna Bhawans in Varanasi
These multipurpose buildings have been built in the district for operating fair price shops and to check the problem of under-weighing.
Built by the state government under MNREGA scheme, these bhavans have a storage room and a distribution room. These structures have been constructed with an objective to make the public distribution system more effective and ensure stability of the ration shops even after the ration dealer is changed.
The fair price shops will be operated at these bhavans. Kotedar (ration dealers) will operate the fair price shops from these buildings. The shop owners will not have to pay any rent to run the shops.
Chief development officer, Varanasi Himanshu Nagpal said that Annapurna Bhawan is such a multipurpose building from where the ration dealers will be able to operate Jan Suvidha Kendra along with fair price ration shops. All Annapurna Bhawans will have e-POS machines with e-weighing scale, so that the underweighing of ration can be stopped and the card holders can get the full ration given by the government.
District supply officer KB Singh said that Annapurna Bhawan is being constructed at special places for fair price ration shops and is being given to the ration dealers/ fair price shop owners. With the construction of Annapurna Bhawan, the ration dealers are getting convenience along with saving money.
The district supply officer said that there are 1,315 fair price shops in Varanasi. This year the target was to build 37 Annapurna buildings, out of which 21 have been completed, while 16 Annapurna buildings built last year are being operated. A total of 37 Annapurna buildings have been constructed in the district so far. According to this year's target, the construction of the remaining 16 Annapurna buildings will be completed soon.

Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in Varanasi from August 13
Varanasi: To encourage the display the national flag on govt, semi-govt, private offices and buildings, the district administration will begin 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign from Aug 13. As per CM Yogi Adityanath's instruction for the grand success of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign to mark the Independence Day , the teams engaged by the district administration will motivate people by distributing 4,75,000 flags for hoisting. ‘We are exploring options to promote floriculture under BHGY'
State rural development and panchayati raj department minister Deepika Pandey Singh in conversation with TOI's ASRP Mukesh speaks on the govt's thrust on augmenting rural economy and livelihood and future plans. Excerpts:- Q: Your department plays a key role for overall development of people at the grassroots. Tell us about the action plans. A: Right from day one, our govt's focus has been mainly to bridge the gap between have and have nots. A state like Jharkhand is still confronted with several developmental challenges. Bhaisahi river in Mau district breathes new life, boosts employment in region
Varanasi: The Bhaisahi river, which winds its way through Mau district over a 53.15 km stretch, had teetered on the edge of extinction. However, thanks to a concerted revival effort, a 41.20 km section of the river has been rejuvenated. This ambitious restoration project not only breathed new life into the river, but also generated a significant 177,900 man-days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). In response to the call given by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in May to restore endangered rivers in the state, the Mau district administration chose Bhaisahi. This river flows 175 km, originating from Dostpur in Sultanpur and merging with the Tons (Tamsa) near Bahadurganj in Ghazipur, after passing through Mau and Azamgarh. The primary objective of this project was to ensure year-round water availability in Bhaisahi by strengthening the ecosystem and addressing various problems caused by encroachment on its land, said Mau DM Praveen Mishra. Before finalising the plan following the selection of Bhaisahi, the DM said there were many challenges, such as removing encroachments from this entirely silted river. After demarcating river land, removing encroachments, and assigning tasks to village heads, secretaries, technical assistants, and workers, the irrigation department team collected comprehensive information about the river's cross-section bed level, bed width, top width, highest flood level, and discharge. This ensured that the restoration and excavation did not harm the environment. The work was carried out at the village panchayat level under the MNREGA scheme, creating approximately 177,900 man-days of employment. He added that 134,800 trees were planted along the riverbanks to secure the embankments, maintain water coolness, and establish a robust ecosystem throughout the area. Upon project completion, check dams will be constructed after river cleaning to ensure year-round water availability. Other districts, such as Jaunpur and Mirzapur, also worked on the restoration of the Pili and Khajuri rivers in this region of eastern UP.
