‘We are exploring options to promote floriculture under BHGY'

State rural development and panchayati raj department minister Deepika Pandey Singh in conversation with TOI's ASRP Mukesh speaks on the govt's thrust on augmenting rural economy and livelihood and future plans. Excerpts:- Q: Your department plays a key role for overall development of people at the grassroots. Tell us about the action plans. A: Right from day one, our govt's focus has been mainly to bridge the gap between have and have nots. A state like Jharkhand is still confronted with several developmental challenges. During the first stint of Hemant Soren led alliance govt between 2019-24, several flagship schemes were conceptualised with focus on creating livelihoods and empowering lives at the grassroots. The successful execution has benefitted several people which is why public brought this alliance govt back to governance for the second consecutive time. As rural development minister, me and my team's mandate is to reach the last mile to upgrade people's lives through various interventions. Results are gradually getting visible now. Q: Can you elaborate? A: For example, the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana (BHGY), the state govt's flagship scheme under MNREGA. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo During the previous stint of our alliance govt, it was renamed, repackaged and relaunched during Covid-19 to address challenges of pandemic induced migration and joblessness. In the last five years, it is now silently leading to a new revolution of economic empowerment in rural areas. Beneficiaries under this scheme, who took up mango plantation, are now feeling financially empowered. Q: The drive is also leading to environmental cause. A: Exactly. In the last five years, under this scheme, we managed to plant 2 crore saplings, of which around 1.5 lakh are fruit bearing ones, and 50,000 timber. This year, we are eyeing to plant one lakh more trees under the scheme. These certainly add to the green cause. We are now eyeing to monetise the carbon credits generated through this scheme so that beneficiaries can earn additional income. Plans are underway. Q: What more innovations BHGY is planning? A: Along with fruit bearing trees, I have asked the department to now focus on flowers (floriculture). There is an immense scope for it in Jharkhand as we are currently dependent on other states to meet our requirements of flowers. This will further help scores of women self help groups to get new market and options for livelihood. Also, besides mangoes, we are now also planning to promote litchi plantation. This apart, we are exploring ways for proper market linkages to beneficiaries. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Bhaisahi river in Mau district breathes new life, boosts employment in region

Varanasi: The Bhaisahi river, which winds its way through Mau district over a 53.15 km stretch, had teetered on the edge of extinction. However, thanks to a concerted revival effort, a 41.20 km section of the river has been rejuvenated. This ambitious restoration project not only breathed new life into the river, but also generated a significant 177,900 man-days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). In response to the call given by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in May to restore endangered rivers in the state, the Mau district administration chose Bhaisahi. This river flows 175 km, originating from Dostpur in Sultanpur and merging with the Tons (Tamsa) near Bahadurganj in Ghazipur, after passing through Mau and Azamgarh. The primary objective of this project was to ensure year-round water availability in Bhaisahi by strengthening the ecosystem and addressing various problems caused by encroachment on its land, said Mau DM Praveen Mishra. Before finalising the plan following the selection of Bhaisahi, the DM said there were many challenges, such as removing encroachments from this entirely silted river. This situation not only caused rainwater to spread and flood neighbouring areas, damaging crops and causing significant soil erosion, but the stagnant rainwater also posed a risk of infectious diseases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cyprus investments might be cheaper than you think Investments Cyprus | Search Ads Get Info Undo Raising awareness among the people about the significance of natural resources and encouraging them to join hands for the revival of the extinct river was also a major challenge, he added. "We also sought the opinion of river circulation system and wetland expert Prof Venkatesh Dutt about necessary steps to maintain the river's continuous flow, such as where to plant trees in concave and convex areas and which areas to leave vacant," said Mishra. After finalising the plan, the restoration work on Bhaisahi, which flows through 31 village panchayats in three development blocks of the district, began. The restoration of the river started under the MNREGA scheme. By engaging men and women from 18 village panchayats in Ranipur block, two in Mohammadabad Gohana, and 11 in Pardaha, restoration works have been completed over 41.20 km of the total length of 53.15 km in the district. Works in the Pardaha block were halted due to waterlogging. He also recalled that a former MLC, Yashwant Singh, worked hard to mobilise villagers by visiting them and highlighting the benefits of rivers to humanity. He informed the local people about the advantages at the village panchayat level. After demarcating river land, removing encroachments, and assigning tasks to village heads, secretaries, technical assistants, and workers, the irrigation department team collected comprehensive information about the river's cross-section bed level, bed width, top width, highest flood level, and discharge. This ensured that the restoration and excavation did not harm the environment. The work was carried out at the village panchayat level under the MNREGA scheme, creating approximately 177,900 man-days of employment. He added that 134,800 trees were planted along the riverbanks to secure the embankments, maintain water coolness, and establish a robust ecosystem throughout the area. Upon project completion, check dams will be constructed after river cleaning to ensure year-round water availability. Other districts, such as Jaunpur and Mirzapur, also worked on the restoration of the Pili and Khajuri rivers in this region of eastern UP.
