Pittsburgh man facing attempted homicide charge after allegedly beating 10-month-old boy

CBS Newsa day ago
A man is accused of slamming a 10-month-old baby's head into a bedpost, injuring the child so badly that doctors had to remove part of his skull in an attempt to save his life.
Police say the suspect is the boyfriend of the baby's mother.
The man, Dominic Pinnick, is expected to be formally charged Sunday night, facing several charges, including criminal attempted homicide and three counts of aggravated assault.
At last check, the baby was in critical condition, but Pinnick is accused of beating his girlfriend's 10-month-old so badly that, according to court documents, the baby is not expected to survive.
A doctor told investigators that the baby's injuries were not consistent with a fall, but were consistent with abusive head trauma and violence.
The baby has one large skull fracture and numerous retinal hemorrhages, which are consistent with violent shaking. The baby also appears to have multiple impact strikes to his chest and a possible arm fracture.
On Friday, just after 4 p.m., Pittsburgh police responded to a house on Kedron Street in the city's Homewood neighborhood for a report of an "infant falling from a bed."
The baby was rushed to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh "unresponsive, not breathing on his own and experiencing multiple seizures," officials say.
A doctor also told investigators the baby had multiple knots and bruising.
His head injuries caused a brain bleed and swelling. The baby went into surgery to remove part of his skull because of brain swelling.
In a police interview, Pinnick told investigators he was asked by the baby's parent to watch the child.
Pinnick said he heard crying and went upstairs to console the child. He said when he went into the bedroom, the baby was on the floor on the side of the bed and wouldn't stop crying.
He got frustrated and walked around the bedroom, and hit the child's head approximately three or four times on the wooden canopy bed posts in the bedroom.
Pinnick said he "aggressively placed the child on the bed, aggressively rocked the baby, and that he grabbed the child and aggressively rubbed the back of the baby's head."
Pinnick said when he put the baby on the bed, he also "struck his head on the headboard."
When he saw the baby's limp body, he called 911 for help.
KDKA-TV reached out to Pittsburgh police for an update on the baby's condition, but has not heard back.

Update in alleged daycare abuse case

Police have been granted additional time to prepare their case against a man accused of abusing children in Melbourne childcare centres. Joshua Dale Brown, 26, was charged in May with more than 70 offences including sexual activity in presence of a child under 16, sexual assault of a child under 16 and possessing child abuse material. He has yet to enter pleas to the charges. Mr Brown had been remanded in custody and was expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 15. But high-profile barrister Rishi Nathwani SC appeared in court on Tuesday as prosecutors requested additional time to prepare a hand-up brief of their evidence. Magistrate Donna Bakos approved the request for police to Mr Brown's lawyers by a deadline of December 4. His case was made public on July 1 after a suppression order was lifted, with police alleging Mr Brown abused eight children between the ages of five months and two years old. Since then, police have established Brown worked at 23 childcare centres across Melbourne between January 2017 and May 2025, urging parents and carers to have 2000 children tested for sexually transmitted infections. On July 15, Victoria Police said establishing Mr Brown's work history had been 'extremely complex' due to childcare providers not having centralised records. The force said the investigation remains 'ongoing' and 'active', expecting to release further updates in the coming weeks. In a statement, Acting Commander of Victoria Police's Crime Command Janet Stevenson said the investigation remains the 'highest priority' for police. 'We are working through a large amount of information that has been provided to us,' she said. 'I understand there are people who will be frustrated and I want to reinforce that this is a continually evolving and changing situation. 'I also want to remind people, especially those struggling with this news, that there is a number of support services readily available for impacted parties and I strongly encourage people to seek those out.' Mr Brown is expected to return to court in February.

Bill Cosby remembers late co-star Malcolm-Jamal Warner

Bill Cosby has reacted to the sudden death of The Cosby Show alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Cosby praised his late TV son's talent and work ethic in the wake of news that Warner had died in a drowning incident in Costa Rica. Cosby spoke with Jericka Duncan of CBS News, who asked him what he wanted the people to remember about the late actor, who portrayed the role of Theo Huxtable on the hit TV show. Cosby praised Warner's dogged efforts during his 197-episode stretch of The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 until 1992. "He was never afraid to go to his room and study - he knew his lines, and then he was quite comfortable, even with the growing pains of being a teenager," Cosby said of his late co-star. Cosby's rep, Andrew Wyatt, told TMZ that when Cosby got the call that Warner had died, it reminded him of being in the studio filming The Cosby Show in January 1997, when he got a call informing him that his son Ennis Cosby had been shot dead in a failed robbery attempt. Wyatt says Warner and Ennis used to play together as kids and "were amazing together". "And now he's lost the man who played a character that was modelled after his own son, Innis, at 54 years of age. That is a lot." Cosby was found guilty in 2018 of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversed the conviction in 2021.
