What Zelensky told Trump during 'historic' 15-minute conversation ahead of the Pope's funeral
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky pushed US president Donald Trump to take a harder line with Russian despot Vladimir Putin during their historic chat at St. Peter's Basilica.
Following a disastrous meeting in the White House in February, in which Zelensky was unceremoniously booted out of the seat of American power, the two world leaders met face-to-face for the first time in two months at Pope Francis' funeral last week.
While both men were applauded for finally sitting down together, little was known about the content of their conversation until now.
According to Axios, Zelensky told Trump that Putin would not be moved on his position on the invasion of Ukraine until he was forced to.
A source told the outlet that Trump admitted he might have to change his approach to dealing with Putin.
Hours later, Trump criticised Putin in a Truth Social post for attacking Kyiv with a missile strike, writing: 'It makes me think that maybe he doesn't want to stop the war, he's just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through "Banking" or "Secondary Sanctions?" Too many people are dying!!!'
Zelensky also asked Trump to reconsider his position on an unconditional ceasefire as a foundation for peace talks, which a source said Trump appeared to agree to.
The Ukrainian leader wasn't the only one to make demands of the other, with Axios reporting that the firebrand Republican pushed Zelensky to sign the US-Ukraine minerals deal as soon as possible.

One person suggested that the reason the Vatican meeting was more positive than their White House meeting was that vice president JD Vance and White House envoy Steve Witkoff were not present.
It is not currently clear how long will hold up his more critical stance towards Russia.
Last night, Trump told ABC News that though Putin 'could be tapping me on a little bit', he still believed the despot was keen to end the invasion.
It comes after Trump said he believes that Volodymyr Zelensky is ready to give up Crimea in order to secure peace terms with Russia.
'Oh, I think so,' the U.S. president told reporters in New Jersey following the Vatican meeting, asked whether he thought the his Ukrainian counterpart was ready to 'give up' the territory.
The comments came after the pair met on the sidelines of Pope Francis ' funeral, their first face-to-face since the disastrous White House summit in February.
Trump said that during their talks at St. Peter's Basilica they had 'briefly' discussed the fate of the Black Sea peninsula.
He insisted that Putin should 'stop shooting' and sign an agreement to end the grinding war.
Zelensky hailed the recent summit as a 'good meeting...that has the potential to become historic', while the Washington said it was 'very productive'.

Earlier today, Russia said the conflict in Ukraine is 'too complicated' to end quickly, dashing hopes that a lasting ceasefire or peace deal could soon be struck and likely angering Donald Trump, who has urged both sides to stop the' bloodbath'.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow today that President Vladimir Putin supports the initiative to establish a lasting ceasefire.
'But before going for it, a whole series of questions need to be answered and a whole series of nuances need to be resolved,' he said.
He went on to claim Putin had expressed a willingness for direct talks with Ukraine, but that there had been no answer yet from Kyiv.
'We understand that Washington is willing to achieve a quick success in this process... Unfortunately, we haven't heard any statements in this context from Kyiv. So we don't know whether Kyiv is ready or not,' Peskov told reporters.

Healey announces £5 billion for military drones and lasers
The funding, announced by Defence Secretary John Healey, includes £4 billion for drones and autonomous systems, and an extra £1 billion for lasers to protect British ships and soldiers. It follows the publication of the Strategic Defence Review on Monday that recommended a greater focus on new technology, including artificial intelligence and drones, as an 'immediate priority'. Mr Healey said the investment would provide 'the most significant advance in UK defence technology in decades' and 'ensure our armed forces have the cutting-edge capabilities they need to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world'. He added: 'We are delivering the Strategic Defence Review's vision to put the UK at the leading edge of innovation in Nato, by backing British industry and fast-tracking the kit of the future into the hands of frontline troops.' Part of the investment will see the establishment of a new 'drone centre' to accelerate the deployment of the technology by all three branches of the armed forces. The focus on drones comes as the technology has proven increasingly lethal on the battlefield in Ukraine, where it now kills more people than traditional artillery. At a meeting of allied defence ministers in April, Mr Healey said the UK estimated drones were inflicting 70-80% of battlefield casualties, while on Sunday Ukraine launched a major attack on Russian airfields deep behind the front line using a fleet of small drones. In addition to investment in drones and AI, the Government has announced an additional £1 billion for the development of 'directed energy weapons' (DEWs) during the current parliament. This includes the DragonFire laser scheduled to be fitted to the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyers from 2027, with a similar system provided for the Army by the end of the decade. DragonFire and other DEWs are intended to provide a lower-cost form of air defence against targets including drones, costing just £10 per shot compared with the thousands of pounds it costs to fire existing weapons.

Trade Secretary to push for timeline on US tariff exemption
Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Trump announced the broad terms of an agreement last month that would exempt the UK from some of the US president's tariffs on steel and cars while increasing market access for other goods. The Prime Minister hailed the announcement as a major achievement, saying the UK was the first nation to reach such an agreement with Mr Trump. But the details are still being worked out ahead of a formal deal, and the Government hopes for an agreement within weeks. Mr Reynolds is expected to discuss implementing the deal during talks with US trade representative Jamieson Greer in Paris on Tuesday, where he is attending a meeting of the OECD. That meeting comes amid uncertainty about the future of Mr Trump's tariffs after a US court last week ruled many of them unlawful, before an appeals court reinstated the levies pending a further hearing. Last week also saw Mr Trump announce that he would double tariffs on steel to 50%, starting on Wednesday, and it remains unclear how the UK would be affected. Mr Reynolds's visit to Paris is part of a three-day trip, during which he is expected to meet other trade ministers and attend a G7 ministerial meeting before heading to Brussels for meetings with his EU counterparts. During the trip, the Trade Secretary will argue that the UK is a dependable partner in an era of increasing global volatility. He said: 'Our deals with the US, EU and India are proof that the UK is the most connected country in the world to do business. Along with our modern industrial strategy, our Plan for Change is making the UK a safe, stable bet in uncertain times. 'We recognise our relationship with G7 allies and EU counterparts must continue to evolve and deliver a better trading environment for our businesses and exporters. 'That's why we want to wipe away costly, business-blocking barriers and open up opportunities to grow our economy, create jobs and put more money in people's pockets.' Andrew Griffith, Conservative shadow business secretary, said: 'Labour told the British public we had a deal with the US – but one month on there is no deal in sight, meaning British businesses and workers continue to suffer because of Labour's failed negotiations. 'After snatching the winter fuel payment, lying about not increasing taxes, and misleading the public by saying the US trade deal was done, the public will rightly not trust a word Labour says. 'As all the other political parties wrangle over how to spend more taxpayers money, only the Conservatives are committed to being responsible with the public finances.'
